Hi Home of Wood why do you think it would be a waste of time to mill too much rot if still ok I would be up for milling it up and its always good to get out and about meeting other people in the same game especially being quite new to milling P M if you are interested in having a deal Cheers Mark
  2. Hi I will try and put up a pick of what I use its made from a flat wood bit with a curve cut from the outside of the flat to the base of the point if you get what i mean will take a pic when in workshop later meant to be doing paper work not arbtalk

Hi kevkal depending on where you are you could always come and do some carving with me in my yard in north dorset in fact if anybody wants to come and do some carving in the yard that would be cool we also have stained glass and welding going on in our workshop so an open invite come down and get involved lets make cool stuff Cheers Mark

Nice shell I will be interested to see your tower as I have just been asked to do one out of sweet chestnut i milled the top 14ft last tuesday after it was dropped and now I have to lift the but up again and carve a castle tower so we will be able to compare our towers good luck with it Cheers Mark

  8. Hi yes I agree start with a mushroom just to get the feel of cutting curves etc ,I have a workshop with a big yard in dorset so depending on where you are you could come and spend a day doing some stuff making sawdust P M me if interested Good Luck Cheers Mark

  10. Hi guys a customer has asked me to cut a round of magrncarta in half its about 1mtr across and 6-8 inches thick do you think I could cut in half withmy alaskan he wants 2 pices about 3inch thick still being quite new to milling I am not sure what do you all think Cheers Mark
  11. How about Green Heart they use it for pier pilings its very heavy so heavy it does not float and depending on how much you need I may be able to help Cheers Mark

Hi kenty I have been carving for 5yrs now and have to do other stuff as well some people do make a good living out of it but they are people like simom o rourke who are very very goood have a look at his web site I do tree work and chinsaw milling as well you colud try some local craft shows I tend to get in for nothing by doing demos or giving a % of my takings I have a workshop in shaftesbury dorset if you want to come down one day and do some stuff together cool always looking to get together with other makers of sawdust good luck Cheers Mark

  14. Hi badgerland the hollow but is still upright in the garden I was going to try and get the home owner to let me do a carving /bench out of it I am in north dorset what would have in mind for the hollow stump it stands 10/15ft tall cheers Mark

Hi the botttom 15ft of the tree was hollow so it must have been standing dead or dying so would that have any bearing on how to leave it I was given a standing dead elm and we milled some of that on my mates miser stright away and the boards did not move at all so would this wallnut be similar what do you think Cheers Mark

Hi Guys a few days ago i asked some advise about milling some wallnut I milled it up yesterday some nice bourds (I will post some pics asap) the customer wants me to air dry it and make a dinning table for them nice porject but how do i price it the tree was wind blown in october and the bottom 15ft was hollow how long should I leave it to dry before I make the table .Thanks in advance for your thaughts always good advise from all you guys on arbtalk Cheers Mark

  21. Hi no pics sorry dimensions are about 2ft round for about 8/10 ft y forking into 2 12/16" stems about 1ft ish 5ft long each hope this helps I also forgot to say I will be using my alaskan hope this helps you to help me Cheers Mark

HI guys I have a wallnut tree to mill its got a y fork and the customer wants as wide boards as poss out of it would it be better to cut it through and through or to do my best at quater sawing it bearing in mind it is in a back garden so no machinery to turn it with only brute force they want me to make a dinning table from the planks so i dont want the planks to cup being new to milling I would appreciate your thoughts Cheers Mark
