    There's no such thing as a chainsaw ' licence ' There is a certificate of competence, for different skills. Having a certificate does not necessarily imply appropriate experience. I know folk who have used a saw for 30 years. They are very competent, but don't have a ticket. I know plenty of people with a ticket, and very little competence. Cheers.

    I have read recent research looking into the link between ivy and host trees. I think it was saying that the relationship is one more symbiotic, rather than parasitic. As said above, ivy could compromise a weak tree. I see trees with the ivy cut, and I feel sad for the loss of habitat, and loss of an important late food source for the birdies. Need a picture to identify the tree though. Maybe pick of a leaf from under the tree and post a pic, as well as one of the tree. Cheers

    Cut with a circular saw first, then finish the cut with a handsaw. You'll be surprised how accurate it is. I do that all the time on posts. Remember that if your circular saw usually cuts 4 inches perpendicular to the timber, then the steeper the angle, the shallower it cuts. Cheers

    Hello. I have a 2yr old 550xp. It's been starting ok when cold, but can't start it when warm. Any ideas folks? Have any of you had similar problems? Thanks

    Does 'pruning' include coppicing then? Could I fell over my 5 cube, and claim I was ' coppicing', even if they are 40-60cm dbh??

    If the chip is not left for a year to breakdown a bit, then I seem to remember that it robs nitrogen from the soil, as it rots down. Probably not a big issue for the willow, but might be worth scraping back chip from the new whips to be safe. Depends how many whips there are tho!

    Got them on my 550xp. Bloody lovely. Apparently they help reduce white finger too.
