  1. Robinia is pretty spiky
  2. Blackthorn, cheap and quick. Berberis is pretty and spiky. Pyracantus. Er.?...
  3. I'm looking for a couple of people, with half a brain, to help with ongoing works. PROW stuff, ie stiles, kissing gates etc, and scrub clearance, and heathland restoration work. So need chainsaw and brushcutter tix, ideally others too. Experience not essential, but a switched on attitude would be great. Working on a self employed basis, as and when required. Usually say rate, occasionally hourly. Email [email protected] with your details and a little about yourself.(note-ability to follow instructions -crucial!) Thanks.
  4. You'll block your flue with tar in no time, then have very little draw, and possibly have a chimney fire. It's not the best thing to burn wet wood, but if that's all you've got, then be aware of the consequences of your chimney /flue.
  5. As long as you didn't spill your coffee on your lap too?!
  6. Thanks all. JP is gonna have a look on Monday. If he can't handle it, I'll look elsewhere! ;-)
  7. Hi. Anyone wanna come and do 5/6 cedar stumps 2-3 ft diameter, Tiverton? Cheers
  8. I just got a pcw5000 winch. I've been using it a bit, but wondered if anyone else has used one, and got any tips. Cheers.
  9. My understanding is that the glyphosate needs to be translocated via the cambium. We cut down to stumps, then spray a 20% solution straight on to the freshly cut surface. It doesn't need to be completely covered with spray, as long as the cambium is well covered, saves a decent quantity of chemical. We use a blue dye as well, really helps.
  10. I use the NFU. Home and Lifestyle insurance. They cover me for accidents and injuries, but not illness. I insure my dog with them too, and the price seems ok.
  11. If only all the hedges I got to lay were 15 year old hawthorn. :-( <<sigh>>
  12. Hello everyone. I'm looking for a 6 ft ring kiln. I'm based in Somerset and willing to travel within the south West. Any ideas?? Many thanks folks. :-)
  13. I'm looking for a 6ft ring kiln. I'm based in Somerset, but willing to travel within the south West. Any ideas?? Cheers folks.
  14. Very interesting. Will try to get there!
  15. How much was that fine looking rig then?? :-)
  16. I'm looking at getting a petrol powered winch. Treadlight Forestry sell them. They seem pretty useful. Any one got one?? :-)
  17. Thanks. Very helpful. Looking for one at the moment. Ground clearance is a problem I hadn't thought of.
  18. I find that if you tilt the machine 45 degrees anti clock wise, you are not cutting across the fibres so much, but more along the length of the plant. That seems to help get through the tougher stuff. Also, if you are using an auto feed head, it helps to keep tapping the head, so the line is fed out quite regularly. This helps prevent the cord breaking where is leaves the head. Hope that's useful.
  19. Where are you? I have a couple of different mowers, flail, and rotary, that would get on top of it. Cheers.
  20. A pony pulling a log is very effective,
  21. Where are you? I have a very effective walk behind flail mower that I use in my woods. Once the bigger stuff is removed by the flail, I use my 3ft Scag mower. V powerful, and easy to manoeuvre around the trees! I'm in Somerset.
  22. Sounds like wood pasture to me. My understanding of agroforestry is that it's for a mix of food and timber.
  23. Really well, and it suckers a lot too. It's a pleasure to work with laying, but a pain in the arse to split for logs!
