  1. Turned a couple of pieces of Cherry on Saturday and so far no splits. Wood is two season and whilst had end splits, turned it and used middle section. Fingers crossed, only a couple o tea light holders but lets hope. Downer has been two Sorby gauges have shattered, both been narrow spindle gauges and man did they shatter. Wouldn't mind but both really sharp and not really doing owt that warranted the destruction.
  2. Hi bud, tried sending message but inbox full.
  3. Been a brilliant day, birds singing, sunshining, all day logging n splitting. Then a couple o hours on lathe trying to turn logs into art. Better still as 2 o our 3 boys are home. how's your day been?
  4. Just watching Sunshine on Leith, great watch especially if your up for Proclaimers songs, nice glass o malt, fire lit, ah it's a hard life:thumbup:
  5. Try a fiskars x27 if all else fails. Awesome Axe.
  6. I'm pruning and shaping two old Yews next week, is the sap a problem. Family have a couple of young kids and don't want them being affected by any potential hazard.
  7. I have a handy 7t horizontal splitter cost £200. Use it for our logs here at home and its great. Mistake was not to shop around and get one on a stand. So bought a low step from trade point and does the job.
  8. Taste like chicken:lol:
  9. Haha thought that'd get ya goat. Quality kit mate the bigger the cut , bigger the cost. You can get a cheaply version that cuts 5" logs for £250 at screwfix. Not big enough for what you use em for.
  10. Si You need one of these [ame] [/ame]So do I..
  11. Was amazed to watch a couple of tea light holders disintegrate in seconds as they where next to the log burner, then in the log burner:001_smile:
  12. Steve This thread has been inspirational and the quality of work people produce is superb. Guess I'm someway off these standards.
  13. :001_smile:Many thanks guys, I have stacks of green wood, apple, pear, damson, tulip, pine and sycamore. Most of which is last season so guess its still to wet. Really enjoy turning although sometimes they start off as one thing and end up another, mostly though they've been keeping us warm by ending up in the fire
  14. Just burning some old 4" old fenceposts in fire. On every night as we are on Calor gas not mains and the house gets cold until August.
  15. Was moving logs tonight to fill log basket when noticed loads at back have a really fine black powder like mould all over them. Not sure what it is but it's definitely a fungi as it resembles puff balls when dry and you step on them. Fine black spores all over the place. Anyone got any ideas what it is or what causes it
  16. It's a quality post and did make me laugh out loud, Mrs Mac gave me one of those looks and when I read it to her we got another laugh, well done:thumbup:
  17. Hi Jon,hope your lives are nearly back to normal after those horrendous floods. Fires been blasting out all night here and it was warm this morning but temps dropping now and oh yes it's raining harder now
  18. Loosen the soil with a garden fork and then hand pull the nettle and bramble, you'll be surprised at how quickly you can get them up and out. Saves spraying. Yeah you might miss some of the root but once everything has finished flowering go back n blitz it with a good mix.
  19. Brilliant, that made me laugh out loud, on a par with everytime RobRainford posts as he has a signature that says Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let her sleep. Makes me smile everytime, quality. Managed to drop a couple of Hollies today and reduce a budleia that had gone nuts. All good practice as next week it's dropping some 50ft Connies that have been allowed to run riot. Not a problem other than the garden they are dropping into is 30 ft wide and I don't really climb anymore... Game on. Also did a jet wash this afternoon before the rain came in again!!
  20. Fires on Jon, burning too well but toastie:thumbup: Enjoy the Pennines Silky, hope the weather is kind. Think we are heading for some snow after all it is Spring:001_smile:
  21. Started turning recently and just about every piece has subsequently split. Using seasoned pear, apple, lime and holly and only making some basics, T light holders, mushrooms etc. Every single piece has split when brought into living room. Could it be log burner is drying them out too quick, even thoughhey have been turned from last seasons wood? Any pointers greatly appreciated as I want to progress onto bowls, but if the basics ain't right .....
  22. Can I make my own out of angle iron, 1 inch box section and some coach bolts? Or do I really need to purchase one?
  23. Sun this morning working in T shirt and then the gates of hell this afternoon, wind heavy driving rain and cold.
  24. Try using the glass cleaner, the green spray stuff sometimes sorts it, depends how bad the scratch is!
  25. Recoil on strimmer has had it's day, star fixing nuts all past extraction by usual means and as if that's not enough mower ( Ariens) has jibbed it too:thumbdown:
