  1. 90% of my weekly earnings are cash jobs :001_tt2:that's why I'm extremely cautious and keep it all on the books.
  2. Hi bud, I normally hire one once I've got a few requests to remove stumps I normally hire for a day or two to get through jobs. Same with chipping, one day hopefully I'll have my own but for now this is how I get through. Sorry it's not really answering your original question. But it works for me.
  3. Couldn't agree more.
  4. These days I work as long as I want, normally until the jobs done. Don't start until I've made Mrs Mac breakfast in bed and had a chat as she gets ready for work. Sorry have to do it as it sets me up for the day, having spent 10 years up and out before she even woke and often returning when she was a sleep. These days I'm blessed to spend quality time. Had a great day today up n out hand balled 3 tonne of Crusher run then did 2hours clearing a garden of leaves and broken branches. Only then to spend time with top guy Wisewood shifting a large Cedar trunk for him to carve. Heavy but excellent work. Couldn't have done any of this if I worked for some one else.
  5. Tried not too but hey ho:thumbup:
  6.
  7. Never stop learning, listening and gaining experience through others. 32 years at the coal face and still learning everyday. I've been refused jobs that I've applied for because the people interviewing thought I was too qualified, or too experienced didn't stop me from continuing my Personal Development. These days I spend more time, money and effort on my sons and trying to get them sorted career wise. Youngest just done his Irata level one and good enough he passed so now using my knowledge and experience to help him develop his application and cv.
  8. I work alone and the music is always on played through iPod and earphones under ear defenders. Some times give the customers a giggle as I'm shaking my ass to some good old rock n roll whilst jet washing or some Clash whilst mowing. Whatever the job the music is on. If I'm working with guys that need my attention then its on but low.
  9. Spot on that's why you have to be clean and clear. Discounts might come into it once I start the job and that's never a problem. Personally I never give discount before a job starts, this one is priced on two people and a set number of hours to get the job sorted, the customer knows this but you never get "Oh let me know if it takes more time than quoted for" I'm more than happy to drop the price once we get into the job. Priced it high for any unknowns that may jump up.
  10. Lady who owns the tree and lives next door to the one it's currently resting on said she was having difficulty with the Loss adjusters and insurance as to who is paying to sort it all. Guy who lives in the house didn't want to comment tonight on the news.
  11. Probably Steve because its been like that for nearly a week, its on a busy road and has caused quite a bit of damage. But more likely people just being curious and want to get a picture with it as the novelty effect ripples out wards and word gets around.
  12. Got to love Conifers, people don't realise how shallow rooted they can be and when they get up close to being mature that they can act like a sail and catch the wind.
  13. Is it on now?
  14. This Connie was blown over last week. It's caused some serious damage to the house next door, the road, pavement and services. They have closed the road and now people are turning up from all over to take pics. It was on the regional news tonight. Wonder if anyone been approached to give it ago, it has caused some. Serious structural damage to garage attached to the cottage, it said the guys car is inside.
  15. Have a word with Mendiplogs he has a couple up for grabs on Arbtrader. The older ones are made of better quality steel and can give a much finer edge when honed and sharpened. I was told that many years ago by a master hedger who never let anyone near his hook. It was razor sharp and kept an edge for many long hours hedging. I managed to get one years later and it is quality, I have a couple of Bulldog hooks but they dull and lose their edge real quick.
  16. How did you guess!
  17. Nice one!
  18. Had a few of them this year. Had others where they've gone with the cheaper option only to call me to sort mess. Don't get it, you get what you pay for.
  19. That's what I said:thumbup:
  20. Called out to job today, big tree come down. Given price to remove tree, take away and fix fence. Customer just asked price for cash!! Told him its the same? What would you do?
  21. Today was a quality day, turned up to do regular gardening and had packed the Ms 150 in the van with my PPE just in case. First call was to a large pop limb that had come down and was hung over a shed and green house. Love the mental challenge of getting the thing down without damage to she'd or greenhouse. Finished it with success and a happy customer. Called to another customer who found me on the U3A this was aPop that had been cut before had gone over and was hung in some Connies and the customers telephone line. The centre of the tree was almost none existent. All down logged and packed away in just under 3 hours. Realised how much I love tree work.
  22. Many thanks guys, That's what's so great about Arbtalk, so much advice from people that know and if they don't they know a man (or woman) who can. There's an Erbaurer outlet on the Wirral and I'm over there at the weekend so will check it out. If not Eggs I'll be in touch. Thanks again Just off to buy some window cleaning kit because the wind last night has blown so much soil from the fields that you'd have thought we had frosted glass.
  23. Spent 12 years sorting this place out when cash was available. Need to sort few more windows, loft insulation etc and nearly there. Water has come close in past but the volume going through in past few weeks is more than we've seen in long time.
  24. Nice one Sleepers here can be £20 plus, new softwood are £22+ Good point by H-A to build in cost of new chain, know a few guys up here do that for most landscaping jobs.
