  1. Going back to the groundie, if you only ever work as a groundie it may well take a quite a few years to become good at working with the climber, but if the groundie has, even just a few weeks, experience of working in a tree, then they would have a greater understanding for the role they have in supporting the climber. understanding the perspective of the climber is the most crucial aspect of being a groundie, it will take a lot longer to learn that purely on the ground, than it will by actually getting up there and seeing it from the climbers perspective. That said, their are all sorts of people in work, i've worked with all sorts. Some people are grafters, some are skivers. Some people will never work efficiently. I've worked with people who cannot even sweep leaves with a brush, no matter how many years experience they have. In Ten years experience working for someone else you might not learn as much as you would in 1 year working for yourself, but again that all depends on the individual.
  2. You can get 3 way snap hooks, I use these ones. There's a cheaper version without the swivel too. ISC captive eye snap hook 3 way with swivel (aluminium) | F R Jones and Son
  3. The comments section is well worth a read. Apparently a safety advisor called Liam believes that professional tree surgeons should wear upper body protection, and take breaks every 10-15 minuets. Fortunately a chap called Arbman put him straight.
  4. Ebay are really pathetic when it comes to dealing with fakes and stolen equipment, but it is worth perceiving with.
  5. I treat my saws, how I treat my women too, I look after them, treat them well and they never let me down.
  6. I get a bad back occasionally, I find hanging upside down for a few minuets in the climbing harness helps correct my spine. It doesn't work for when it's a muscle injury, when it's muscle strain I use Ibropufen to reduce inflammation, this also stops 'referred pain' which causes other muscles to tense up to protect the back, which results in more stiffness and a longer recovery time. After a day or two of rest and ibropufen, you can then start to increase the blood flow to help healing. This is when its best to use stuff like Deep Heat and hot baths. I also have one of those ab belts that sends electrical impulses to tense the muscles, the one I have has a rehab setting which helps reduce pain and speed up recovery. 10. I've been told by a few people that Petzl have extended the lifespan guarantee of some of their equipment to 10 years. But I suppose thats always going to depend upon condition and the amount of use it's had. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=121498 Support:*Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) | Petzl 9. What is the lifetime of my Petzl equipment? For plastic or textile products, the maximum lifetime is ten years from the date of manufacture (See: How can I find out the age of my Petzl PPE?.) The lifespan of metal products is not limited. Warning: An unusual event may require you to retire a product after only one use. This may involve the type and intensity of use, or the environment in which it is used: aggressive environments, sharp aretes, extreme temperatures, chemicals... 11. I watched this documentary a few years ago. In one part a butcher compares the meat sold in supermarkets to meat sold in a butchers, and shows you the common tricks used. A chef also shows you the difference between factory farmed chicken and free range one. They also show you how much fat is in modern factory farmed chickens. 13. The neural pathways between our brain cells are a bit like paths through fields of tall grass, the more they are used the easier they are to travel, sometimes a well worn path could be disused for a few years and it will take quite a few journeys before it gets used enough to be easily accessible again. Some memories are so strong, the pathways are used so often that never become blocked unless a serous brain injury has taken place, you're unlikely to forget your own name, your family, where you live and work etc.. Your brain also forms new neural pathways all the time, sometimes these criss cross through old pathways and partially degrade them, unless you make efforts to keep them accessible. Memory can be categorised into different types, there are different models of memory, the main types are short term memory, working memory and long term memory. You're actually supposed to forget stuff, it's no good for your brain to remember every place you've ever parked your car, you only need to remember where you parked it last. A short term memory can become a long term memory by making it stronger, like clearing a pathway. A memory is initially created in short term by a sensory input, you can strengthen that memory by retrieving it (thats why teachers as you questions and set tests), by using different brain process to recall the memory like 'thinking' about the new memory, 'writing' and 'talking' about it, you involve more areas of the brain and make the memory stronger. If you haven't done something for a while access to the memory will start to fade, chances are it will still be there, it just needs a bit of maintenance. Learning new stuff really helps keep your mental processes active.
  14. I was in Fletcher Stewarts today, they have at least 2 in stock.
  15. I did cs38/39 when I was 39, it was easy, but for the last few years I've been training parkour 3 times a week with these chaps in the video below. I wouldn't have found it quite so easy in my early thirties as my fitness was on a steady slope downwards while my weight was edging upwards. Climbing is all dependant on technique, fitness level and weight. You can pick up some basic climbing technique at a local climbing centre, and learn some rope skills. Your strength will improve as a direct result and if weight is a limiting factor you will soon realise it and start to make sensible decisions about what you eat. 16. I couldn't possibly give an estimate, until I had seen the light bulb in question.
  17. Awesome, I was just about do a search for when they would be available in the UK. I should be ordering one in Feb. Thanks for posting.
  18. Yeah, they said that about the 560xpg I ordered from them, told me it would be in stock in two weeks, six weeks later, they blamed it on a shipping delay from Husqvana's wearhouses in Sweden, and said it would be another two weeks. I contacted Husqvana directly who told me that they had an annual shutdown and that they would not be starting production of that model for another month. I can live with delays, but i won't do business with people when they bullshit me. I suppose they have a nice enough website though.
  19. Some part of the Roots near the surface are important for exchanging gases, the roots 'breath/absorb' oxygen, and by coving the ground where the roots are established with say, 12" of soil, the roots will suffocate and die. The roots would also suffocate and be susceptible to disease if the root-zone became waterlogged for an extended period of time, depending upon the type of plant/tree. I believe that after rain as the water drains deeper into the soil, air is pulled down towards the surface roots. Oxygenated water should also help the roots, I expect the water would be oxygenated by the process of rainfall. But, I am by no means an expert and will yield to anyone with a more educated explanation of the root zone and its use of air.
  20. Now three quarters of the way through with correct form.
  21. Well done, I found It got much easier over a period of three weeks. Last week I started trying it with a 18kg weighted vest. The first time I only got half way through, a few days later I made it to the third break, and by the end of the week I managed it all the way through, but the push up form was poor. Over next three weeks I will work on doing it all the way through with the 18kg vest and correct form, so far I'm only half way though with correct form. As a bit of trivia, the lyrics to the song are apparently 'Green Sally Up' it's based on an old slave song. TEXT ANALYSIS - GREEN SALLY UP | Cocojams

  23. The Gopro3 is the one to go for, it will film 1080p in 60frames per second. I've got a HDcontourGPS, which is great, but only does 1080p in 30fps. I hope contour release one soon with higher spec to match the Gopro3, because I've already got all the mounts and accessories for the HDcontour, plus I find the HDContour much easier to use on a motorbike helmet and operate while wearing gloves.
  24. Have any of you guys tried the Bring Sally Up push up challenge yet? I've been doing it since I first found it on youtube about 4 weeks ago. The hard version is when you do it declined.
