  1. i'll happily try to identify it for you if you like. send me a sample from a 2 1/2" board (18" should do) and i can turn a bowl whilst sending a bit to dave hilton if i can't figure it out.
  2. should be, how big is it? why don't you split it in half lengthways to judge the timber then you can decide whether to mill it or not?
  3. they do differ in ingredients used to compose the stuff so there will be differences as to what properties they have. i'm using one made by suffolk pigments and it's great stuff, before that i used rustins.
  4. no mate, wych elm is ulmus glabra and red elm is ulmus rubra. have you got any lumps left over? i'd happily rough out a bowl blank or two and take a sample at the same time.
  5. any chance it could be red elm...
  6. if you sandseal then you can't put an oily wax on it as it won't sink in. either sandseal and briwax it or go for many coats of danish
  7. if you start whizzing around like him then we've got to see some vids sean... that guy is an absolute loony, love it...
  8. i'm guessing that oils will be soaked up by the wood and you will use alot. i would get a sample and try out 3 different methods to see how they come out.
  9. that's nice for a first attempt mick, why don't you pop back round for the day and i can give you some pointers or a lesson?
  10. look downwards.
  11. you must start a thread documenting its journey back to working order mate, that looks like a fantastic machine... any idea of who made it?
  12. the bark looks like yew. the sapwood looks like yew. the wood looks like oxidised yew. if you cut the oxidisation away and the wood is orange, it's yew.
  13. never be afraid to tell a vicar where to go... any pics of the wood?
  14. it could be red elm but i'm not 100% sure.
  15. looks like a lime tree?
  16. looks like an elm to me. the double serrated edge should help you narrow down the exact species.
  17. no but if you can buy them that cheap then i would just buy a cheap skilsaw that will cut 2 1/4"and cut them yourself.
  18. you should get some excellent boards milled from a couple of those sections, you must put up some photos of the timber you get out of it.
  19. for turning yes that is as big as you'd need it. for milling as has been asked then it would need to be 30"+ before it's worth milling.
  20. size matters here mate, if its only 18" ath the base hen it's firewoodbut if you get a big bit like this http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/milling-forum/88501-monkey-puzzle-timber-sale.html#post1319597 then it's worth milling.
  21. what happened to this puzzle in the end??? did you mill it gobby?
  22. if you want any advice on preparing blanks mick then pop back round.
  23. a few more pictures might help?
  24. was not going to comment as i was waiting to see what others thought but as there is an indecisive view i'll add my 2pence. when i opened my complete guide to trees on the norway maple page there is a picture of a leaf that looks identical to the picture. acer lobelii?
  25. if it turns out to be paulownia and it needs to be felled i'd be interested in the wood.
