  1. i thought the old traditional way was to let a couple of pigs roam around it for a few weeks as they clear the floor but leave the trees?
  2. i could do if i only used oak or another smoking timber, however i rarely use oak and have so many different timbers turned each week i doubt that they'd be interested.
  3. as a woodturner i create loads of shavings and give it to a local guy who runs a chicken farm. apparently they love pecking around in it.
  4. any prunus species will split bert, you can't get away from it. i'd stick to softwoods if you can like larch, western red, douglas fir or anything in the cupressaceae. you could drill out the pith to reduce splitting in the cherry but the sap loves to split.
  5. hi steve, you mentioned it last time we met and i was hoping for the best then, i so glad to hear that you on the road to recovery mate. see you soon.
  6. so far as i know we only get two species growing commonly in this country, eucalyptus globulus eucalyptus gunnii
  7. i believe you can get some pretty good shots from outer space... i'm near burnham beeches and windsor great park and they are a must on winter days.
  8. carve a seat out of it and it will last for decades...
  9. logrod, it can make the bowls look the same shape if you are trying to get lots out of the same bit but if you cut them a bit thicker this gives you freedom to change the shape from the radius of the cutter
  10. that video is on a jet 3520B and popeye arms i have but they are not used that much on the woodcut bowlsaver as they utilise physics rather than brute force as in the video i am holding the camera and only using my left hand to pull the handle round. £250 at the time i bought it paid for itself in hours after it saved some large bowl centers in walnut, catalpa and elm. other bowlsavers are ridiculously overpriced i admit but i think they are over engineered. with a sharp tip and patience you can use that woodcut on a lathe like my old one that had 3/4hp motor.
  11. red??? rhododendron is creamy yellow. are you sure it wasn't a bit of cherry laurel? that is reddish peach and rock hard. what was the bark like
  12. a bowlsaver will give you a nest of bowls rather than one big one. personally i would use the bowlsaver to get 3-4 roughed out bowls from each burr then seal the grain and leave for 6 months to a years for it to dry. . 13. hi will, i would like all my stock to look like this. yes i do stick two bits together as you thought. i put two internal dowels inside to keep it together as they get properly walloped. .
  14. no, i'll do that if i get hold of them.
  15. i think you should use a bowl saver on those to get the best out of them other wise you only get two bowls. i think i can get 8 out of those.
  16. seal the ends with pva or paint asap...
  17. blimey thats a big cotoneaster. jon, can you make a special trip just for me before it splits? kev, how long has it been down?
  18. split it down the pith for the larger bits and seal the ends. the best thing to do though would be to rough out some bowls so that they can move without splitting.
  19. how big are they and what do they weigh? i might be able to sort out as courier?
  20. get all of it mick, they are great for turning. i'll take what you can 't use in return for a lesson or two if you like.
  21. if anyone can supply me with 3 1/2" x7" hornbeam either fully air dried or kiln dried of any length over 48" then please don't hesitate to get in touch.
  22. the hornbeam is needed for the pins. these are 14 1/4" tall by 6 3/8" wide. .
  23. here is the old frame and the one i made to replace it. .
  24. calling all millers. i'm inquiring to see how available anyone can mill 3 1/2" x 7" section hornbeam for me? a few years ago i did a job for a skittle alley that included using hornbeam but this was difficult to come by, i need to know if anyone can help me out here.
