I can see you have had that conversation more than once as well! There must be way more 550's sold than 261's so I would expect a higher number of complaints about the 550. Husky have reigned the 50cc bracket for quite some time. Unless you have a poor 550 it just doesnt compare to the 261. -
I was talking to a customer the other day who was contemplating a 550xp but really loved his 346. I mentioned that I think the trio brake version is still available in France. Just out of interest does anyone know if they still are, or where else you could pick one up from?

I think there has been a bit of confusion going on. On your very first pic I thought the bottom chain was the new one (it does makes sense now I have looked through the thread again) Must just be dodgy camera angles as the bottom chain looks like it has been filed square. So yes, a standard round 4mm file will do the job. fine. Just dont press down too hard which increase the hook on the chain and try not to drag the file backwards along the tooth on the return stroke. If you do you can knock the sharp pointed corner down a bit which can make a big difference to performance. Oh I you might find you need to take the depth gauge's down more often (well thats what I found when I used that chain although I am bad for forgetting to do the rakers!)

No problem. Im interested to hear how you get on with the chain. Good job sawchip pointed my mistake out as I would have confused matters further. Now that Everton have been tonked I bet you have nothing better to do on a Sunday night than pop down to your workshop and take a few more pics:thumbup1: I'm going to do a bit more research tomorrow (that square ground chain looks too different) and look forward to hearing what your saw shop bloke has to say. I do prefer a full chisel chain all the time but I do like the other stihl full chisel chain, the 3617 as it didnt need the depth gauges taking down all the time.

That will teach me to look properly in the future! Yes you are right on that one. It is interesting though as I presume it is something your local dealer is doing to the chains as I wouldnt have thought Stihl were doing that? So, the top chain is the 3616 full chisel and the bottom chain is the 3636 semi chisel square ground? Doesnt look like 3636 in the other pic though, the cutter looks taller.

They both look like full chisel to me. The bottom being square ground. I have never tried square ground chain so I can't comment on how easy or difficult it is to sharpen.

AFAIK the autotune will only start tuning under full throttle and under load ie running somewhere between the 9000-11500 RPM range? I usually advise customers to use the saw and if it isnt running right after that do the 3-5 min cutting procedure, never usually hear back from them again, until they flood it which is easily the most common 'problem' with huskys. to the OP, if it is still having idling issues (although this has probably been done and checked) replace the spark plug, make sure the gap is spot on (0.5mm) and check the ignition coil to flywheel gap (0.25-0.3mm) I have came accross quite a few stihl and husky mtronic/autotune saws that have had poor idling and it has been down to poor gaping, mainly on the spark plug and the odd time too big a gap on the coil.

Thats good news then and good on you for checking it out. Unfortunately it does seem as though it is just some poor bloke fallen on bad times.

It could be worth contacting the supplier. We have had more than enough credit card charge backs and attempts on all types of arb gear. Those brand new bargain chainsaw trousers, harness boots etc that you see on eBay are more often than not stolen.

I have fixed plenty of ms200's that have had fully or partially blocked oil pumps. No 201's yet but it is worth checking as I'm sure it's the same setup.

You could try the msa 31 snr ear muffs as they are wider and do clamp down more. Standard 30mm slot fitting. Or the ct climbing helmet, we have sold quite a few of these as they fit smaller heads but you can have issues as they don't seem to clamp the ear muffs down a well due to the bracket on the helmet. A bit of swings and roundabouts there. Best if you can find a local dealer who stocks both of the above and give them a try.

Yes, it is fairly easy to do. You just need the leather straps,the metal hoop that screws into the shank and the metal ring that attached the straps to the metal hoop. Although we hardly have any distel spikes or parts in stock atm (waiting for a delivery) you can see the parts required by looking at this picture Distel Gecko Aluminium Climbing Spikes Classic RED

I agree, its not worth throwing good money at a bad saw, just hoping it was something simple. As others have said you would be looking at about £30 for a husky bar and rim so with a chain its getting near to £300 and if it is something serious there is no way its worth that. In regards to Mattys post about a short block, I have just had to order one in and they have gone up a fair bit, £180 + vat now, does save a fair bit of time though. The saw I mentioned with the bit of stuck chip was easy to see without taking the flywheel off. The serial numbe will start with 2014XXXX 2015XXXX etc showing the date of manufacture. Good luck with whatever you do and I hope you dont have to much grief getting your money back.I wouldnt start taking it apart though if you are sending it back.

Its probably pointless me mentioning this as it looks like you are going to return it but it could be something very simple. I had a 560xp in not long ago with the same symptoms. I thought it might be bearing issues as it turned freely to a point, jammed a bit then turned freely again. A piece of chip was jammed into the crankcase behind the flywheel catching on the flywheel every so often. Fleeced the customer for £250, 5 minute repair and everyone is happy Just joking BTW, I only charged £100. Depending on how much you paid for the saw it might be worth keeping if it is something silly as a used bar isnt worth much.

ms261 needle bearing/play in drive sprocket, common problem??

If its a plastic one then throw it in the bin as chances are it wont work anyway. TBH IME it is a waste of time greasing needle bearings unless you have your saw idling for a big percentage of the time. OK pump it a bit when you are doing a bit of TLC but as a daily/weekly routine dont bother. Once the chain is moving the bearing is redundant. The MS261 was a drum issue not a grease/bearing issue. -
Dont forget, its important to have a bit of hook on the chain. For reference I have attached a pic of just the right amount of hook required...

If they also priced in some R&D Lets not forget that fake copying does have a major impact on future products. I know speaking to manufactures that a ridiculous amount of money goes into developing and producing a product, this needs to be recuperated through sales. Does China have many innovative home grown products in production? If we all bought fake gear be it well made or not we would soon stifle advancement. Just look at the improvements in the last ten years be it PPE, machinery or tree climbing techniques, how many of these came directly from the companies providing fake gear? Dont buy fake gear, I have seen many a poor chinese copy chainsaw, yes they cut wood but that's where the similarity ends.

There are products (category 3 PPE for example) that I am fairly sure require inspection from an external body plus continuous testing hence why you will see CE XXXX on a lot of hardware X being a four digit number to show it has been externally tested. Sorry to derail the thread.

A far as I'm aware they can't just put a CE mark on items, they have it tested to ensure it meets the standard. I'm also sure we would be in very serious trouble if we were selling certain items not CE approved.
