  1. If you read the NPORS site there is an update on it all,..a lot of the construction industry are askinf for either/or now where as before it was just CPCS, I do know people that use FMOC on constructin/road builds, as long as you have the cscs blue card . FC are even insisting on FMOC for mounding/raking etc now. and all on site must have first aid +F
  2. NPORS is supposedly being recognised on a par with CPCS now , think it came in October 2016, .. As far as FC sites are concerned it would be depend what the work was,..if it is something that has to be covered by FMOC they would require that. Road building etc would be covered by construction industry certs.
  3. A lot of those older husky fuel filters had a foam insert, I have seen these saws starved of fuel when the sponge has soaked water from condensation up etc .
  4. I think its more a case of buyers being in a more competitive market that has forced standing prices up. Tbh if the fuelwood/ biomass market hadn't increased the wood would not get cut.Since the demise of hardwood pulp mills the market was virtually dormant until grant aid became available for bring certain areas back into management,...once the demand for fuelwoods increased a lot of the grant aid was removed. One or two marketing companies , one in particular in the south east put a false bottom in the market by paying ridiculous standing prices,..but then word gets out.
  5. So what are you saying,..you are not getting a high enough rate for doing the job,? If not why not?
  6. Avoid shake in oak, make sure theres plenty of heartwood. Butt length of larch is best avoided, particularly for waney,..it will spring and move .
  7. Depends on the lengths in comparison to the length of trailer. £50 a ton for larch is a strong price, certainly if there are butt ends on there, it moves a lot when sawn and larch butts are notoriously swept, a lot of mills wont take the first 8ft of larch. Only other way would be to measure the logs individually and convert back. Very plain oak,.fencing quality, would be £100 t plus
  8. 12d in a shilling also. 12 in a dozen,..unless youre a baker of course.
  9. The point of my first comment about the video was that it would appear that you have guys certainly within two tree lengths and at times within one tree length whilst felling is taking place,..its not accepted practice and would be impossible to wriggle out of if something did go wrong.Who knows who watches these vids? I could be on FISA steering panel for all anyone knows. It is without question a red card situation with FC, and should a case end up in court God forbid would take some defending.
  10. Its very sad, 58 years old from memory. Chances are ,like a lot more of us he has probably done certain things thousands of times within his career, sadly it only takes one time to inflict terrible injuries or bring life to an end. There are certain things I struggle to get my head round,..not being able to have a second man wedging being one of them, but I have to say I do agree with the two tree length, so I guess you cant have the best of both worlds. In a perfect world things go right, but it only takes a gust of wind at the right time to spin a tree off a stump. I am old school, and spent a lot of my career falling in jeans , no helmet etc.but in the last few years my thinking has started to change, I have worked with people that are now dead from accidents in the forest. There has been a lot of opposition to FISA, and I do not agree with everything they stand for , but if some of it saves just one life then its justified. The objections to FISA have mostly been based around their money making policies around refreshers and FMOC.Very few would object to their safety policies and safe working guidelines,..a lot of them are trying to prevent further accidents occurring based on those that have already happened, that's got to be a good thing.
  11. You are wrong, it is not acceptable to have a wedging man on any site,..two tree lengths is two tree lengths. If you are caught wedging for someone on FC sites its red card for fallers and site suspended. I know of it happening several times and foresters go as far as taking photo/video evidence. There are plenty of wiches that carry 60m plus of rope, most of the ones I have had have been 100m, the alternative is use an extension rope.
  12. FC sites red carded straight away . There was another guy killed in Scotland last week, surprised nobody has picked up on it on here. Only details released is tree landed on him. I think you will find it does happen on real sites or you are walking. It cost Buccleuch estates £130k a few years back...might be worth googling.
  13. Good to see the two tree length being applied .
  14. Pretty sure the ones I have used have a sensor for the bonnet.
  15. Tbh when we have harvested for the bigger marketing companies they have always paid a float on roadside stock if things aren't moving quickly , normally up to around 80%. Big hardwood we always do on measure, its just the firewood from that that is likely to be left roadside,..sometimes for months.Getting the other 20% is always questionable because of weight loss , particularly on conifer after a few months. Most of these companies do pay on a rolling week or fortnight basis, but its very easy for loads to get lost in the system,.if you get what I mean .
  16. Theres been a few advertised on forest machine operators page on facebook recently.
  17. I had a similar problem with a Discovery years ago,it was fine for a few miles then gear selection became hellish. Garage stripped it down after loads of checks ,fitted new clutch whilst in there...30 miles up the road no better....300 miles later it just came right. Someone in the know said it was an hydraulic problem which would come about when the system became pressurised,...take from that what you will.
  18. Was there no damage to the car that would make it worth a combined claim on the insurance? If its a protected policy it shouldn't affect it should it providing the claims don't exceed the allowed quota ? Is there an excess payment on the policy and how much ? if its around the level of the quotes theres not much to be gained from involving the insurance company , unless there is legal protection on the policy to fight it, although in insurance terms its a relatively small amount and they would possibly just pay it as it would be cheaper for them.
  19. Is there a brake on the winch drum that's not engaging properly?
  20. Does the winch have an hydraulic motor , or a hydraulically operated clutch ?
  21. Well it is a difficult call, but its also a fact of life. Harvesters have become far more efficient, steep sites that would once have produced 50t on a good day are now producing into the hundreds with hill climbers. There has never been any real guarantee for continuity of work,no one knows whats coming to market . The south east and south west have always had problems with softwood harvesting,..no large end users, consequently a lot of the timber has to go silly distances to mills that have some capacity. You will know that from your own time in it. I am not sure its always a change in demand causes the problem,.more a case of production exceeding demand .
