He's not after a subby Eggs, full time on the books is what he's after. Talking to his lads, they said he's good to work for so I'd assume that wages are sufficient and commensurate with skills/experience and everyone is happy.

Ians a good 'un Eggs. I've met some of his lads previously and if I was thirty years younger I'd be happy to work for him.

I've met Ian and some of of his lads, he runs a good firm and encourages/supports career advancement for the right people.

It's not too difficult (converted a Kwik-chip 222 to tracks years ago) but sourcing a decent undercarriage can be expensive and time consuming. Andy Johnson, from on here, did a few with remote control functions too.

When I was studying we had pest and disease identification tests. 10 different pests or diseases. 30 points total for common name, scientific name, and how they caused a problem. One kid got 1 out of 30. He even got the common name of a wasp wrong. And he passed the course! But you didn't get rewarded with alcohol for the highest marks

Never came across it really. Good groundsman and climbers who respected them and would go out of the way to make their life as easy as possible. Personally, I never wanted to get down to start dragging branches, unless the site dictated that brash couldn't be cleared as stuff came down. Otherwise, if there was a load to shift, something had gone wrong in planning the numbers of lads on the floor. But, surely the attitude is to do what needs doing, finding something to do if your underworked and stood around and working efficiently - it's not rocket science.

I normally leave my laptop in sleep mode, so sometimes have to restart it or restart the wireless box thing when the internet slows. Edit. And occasionally arbtalk won't load at all on a phone, until the phone is turned off and back on.

I've had my own contracting business, been a subbie climber, been an employed climber and was until recently managing a contracting business. I don't understand some of the attitudes that exist at all. While I was managing a business I explained the costs of running the business to everyone, the staff knew the prices of jobs and they weren't poorly paid. If they wanted particular equipment to make life easier, I asked that they made a case themselves to show how if would make life easier, safer, improve efficiency etc and if it was valid we'd get it. As particular lads gained experience and could do more, I'd make a case to the owner for wage increases, which were usually agreed. Because I was timing work for them, the job sheet had a section for them to complete for the time on site - feedback for me that I was somewhere near on my times and not being unrealistic in my expectations (No-one ever filled that in, even after I explained that it wasn't a witch hunt to cause argument or recriminations) The attitude that the business was making all the money still persisted, I didn't know what more could be done.
