  1. Wasn't me who who said your chain was slack Bill Thought this thread was a little ironic after passing a shop fitter with a chainsaw on the high street Monday afternoon, happily sawing a beam, all within his safety zone of a traffic cone and totally oblivious to passers by.
  2. Paul, I'm sure that every farmer I've ever met has taken everything that you've just said into consideration, before hitching up his jeans, pulling his wellies on and picking up his 'Farm Boss' to cut up a fallen tree. Where's the tongue firmly in cheek emoji?
  3. I'd qualify that and say 'some' cops. Ultimately, like us mere mortals, there's those that just do whatever's needed at the moment in time without thought or consideration for themselves... and those that don't.
  4. He's a manager at the end of the day and totally remote from hands on front line policing. The report goes on about a discussion to decide the best course of action, whereas in the real world of active policing the reaction would be to just do, no talking about it, nothing. Realistically he probably stopped being a policeman thirty years ago when he became a manager/bean counter/HR/PR bod.
  5. I showed this to my missus this morning. Even she asked why the tree wasn't sectioned down (Everyone's an expert apparently)
  6. Todays job Mick! The near future might be just too late.
  7. In an attempt to establish RPAs for a proposed development I'm hoping that the collective arbtalk mind might point me to some literature. There's a row of semi-mature alder and ash growing on a narrow belt of land (around 2 m wide) between a canal and a pond/flood-plain. In the summer the pond was dry, just really soft mud with no vegetation, but is now filling up from precipitation. So, during an average summer I'm assuming that some water remains in the 'pond' almost all year. Some roots are visible that head towards the pond bank before being truncated and appear to be dead (from alder) I know that alder have special vessels that supply oxygen to the roots and that they can grow in water, but can/will they if the area is underwater for 80/90 % of the time? Searching for tolerance to flooding reveals that ash has either a high or intermediate to flooding, but I don't think that information is that relevant to a site which is mostly flooded/water-logged/under water. The TO suggested that root-spread was probably restricted to the belt of land between the two bodies of water and I'm not sure that I can agree or disagree. Thoughts?
  8. Obviously he had other duties to consider. “Mr Mackey then returned immediately to New Scotland Yard, where he carried out his responsibilities as acting commissioner; namely to lead and coordinate the strategic response across the Metropolitan police to protect London during what was an ongoing terrorist incident.” I suppose that if the attacker had been restrained and they needed someone to sit on him, he, naturally, would have obliged.
  9. That takes a bit of working out. If the fire started at the chipper it's a long way to spread to the front of the motor and vice versa. You'd kind of think that initially an electrical/fuel related fire in the engine bay would spread slowly towards the back of the vehicle because all the fuel components are at the front. But who knows? As Stubby said, what a nightmare to sort particularly being on, I'm assuming, someone else's' drive.
  10. If you're taking online payments/orders that you are unable to fulfil, is it your standard practice then, to wait until the purchaser starts to chase up items that haven't arrived? Then inform them that it's not in stock and won't be available for a number of weeks? The Rotatech chains were announced with a lot of fanfare and encouragement to trial them. Our attempts were far from satisfactory in even getting them delivered and the attitude when chasing them up left a lot to be desired. Later communications then blamed a staff member who was no longer an employee! Good communications with the customer are important. If something is ordered it's expected to arrive or, at least, the customer reasonably expects to be informed of delays. Not to have to chase up non-deliveries only then to be informed that it's not coming for some time. My experiences have nothing to do with fashion. I'm also aware that they have had some issues over the last few years, businesses do but that's history. But their approach to communication with the customer is pretty poor, from personal experience on a number of purchases. Online purchases are probably better avoided entirely, you'll pay your money, wait in hope and then have to spend time making phone calls to find out why your stuff isn't coming. It needs sorting out and I hope that it does get sorted out. Personally, when the service is good I'll say that it is good. So equally, when things need improving something should be said.
  11. Came across this elsewhere, https://www.rt.com/uk/440581-cyclist-tree-fall-escapes/ which gives the street name, in London.
  12. You did better than we did. Placed order, paid for it, waited a fortnight before ringing up to be told that hey had none in stock and wouldn't have a production run within the next four to six weeks. And NA probably one in ten orders are satisfactory. They really need to get their house in order unfortunately.
  13. By observation, I'm sure that the location of fruiting is linked to the earlier fruiting. I've scoured the surrounding unburnt grass and heather and can't find a single specimen, yet for about a week/ten days they were popping up on the burnt ground. I'm thinking that there's either a change in the chemical constituency of the soil, due to the fires, or that there was sufficient heat to damage/kill the rhizomorphs which has led to fruiting. It's really strange, there's numerous FFBs scattered over the burnt areas right to the edge but nothing at all beyond them (that I can find)
  14. I don't know. You can't but wonder at the safeness of the methodology used to get to the stage they're at now.
  15. So your risk assessments have now been altered to include the potential risk of mulching tramps?
  16. It's about time. Why are the professional 'skins' smoking?
  17. How does anyone (employed by an LA) go onto site and think that's acceptable. Beggars belief.
  18. Might have been one I quoted, where they said that they had a cheaper price!
  19. I don't know why, but I thought the position/role had to become redundant, not the employee.
  20. Rise above it, keep doing it right (and being right) and your professionalism will eventually win out.
  21. Trick is to never come to a complete stop. Certain areas, stopping at a red light is like a tyre change in the pits at the Grand Prix
  22. At least she used her indicators. Driving in Manchester today I've had three cars use the left turn filter lane to cut me up from the left hand side when they've gone straight on. Apparently hazard warning lights constitute as a sorry/thank you/ don't get and abuse me signal. Twats!
  23. But that's the climbers problem. And after that, the LA's to decide whether there's enough of a contravention that it's in the public interest to pursue it. Hopefully, everyone is reasonable enough to appreciate that trees don't read the rules and regs and just grow without neatly fitting into the little boxes that we try to fit them in.
