  1. There is nothing like a good belt with a hammer to get a clutch off. Its got to be technical belt though.
  2. Just for info guys, with regards to the vac/pressure testing above. Stihl stipulate creating vac and pressure only to 0.5 bar. This is adequate to detect leaks detrimental to operation, and not so great as to cause artificial leaks by 'blowing seals' ( no jibe at eskimo's nocturnal habits intended:001_smile:) If pressure is maintained for 20 seconds then all is well. Vac should drop from 0.5 to no less than 0.3 in less than 20 secs. Small leaks are naturally overcome by the engine speed.

  4. Whats on my bench? Too much in the "pending" area, and too little in the "done" area. If the customers would only stop ringing to ask if there kit is ready, I might actually get the time to get it done.

  6. If the rattle stops when the clutch engages (i.e the chain spins) then the clutch is the source. If the rattle continues even at revs its somewhere else. I had one with a loose bolt behind the flywheel once.

  8. A new vehicle should not have a fault with the fuel system that is not covered by warranty. This is assuming that it is an actual fault, i.e 'faulty parts or workmanship' If the fault is down to fuel contamination then it is only fair that you pay up. But by them saying it needs a modification is basically saying that the original filter is not fit for purpose. This being the case I would press for full warranty.

  10. Nice one Woodworks. The smoke will have been from the petrol residue in the carb and oil residue in the exhaust. It will clear up when run on Aspen and never smoke again.
  11. It really does sound typical symptoms of a split inlet manifold though. As you put the saw into work the top handle lifts and opens up the split.
  12. Also caused by magnesium deficiency. Supplements easily available.

  17. Sorry Gav, your dealer is correct. The gearbox is only sold as a complete unit. No internal spares are available The current RRP is £243 plus vat
  18. Yes, tiz a good job its not with me Matthew, you may have had to wait a bit. There is rather more queued up than just those 7 red tractors!
  19. Of course, it was a very reasonable question Matt, you must excuse our little jokes. Seriously, Aspen. Very briefly, Aspen is a very pure form of petrol which contains no solvents, benzene or sulphur. The benefits of this are, Clean burning, with no carbon buildup in upper cylinder, resulting in much longer engine life. Very clean exhaust fumes with many less harmful emissions, so better for the well being of the operator. Chemically stable, so it does not go stale like petrol, so performance and starting are always consistent, even after long periods of storage. For more in depth information, and to save me writing pages and pages got to the ASPEN link on the right of this page. Also try reading through my 'one reason I use Aspen' thread. You will see posts both for, and against on that thread.

  25. The Hayter 56 v/s is indeed pretty feeble in the transmission department. It is not at all unusual to have to replace the gearboxes, but to be fair the first thing to check are the drive belts. They do wear very quickly and the slip is often due to the belts rather than the box. Belts are cheap and easy to replace. As to coverting to the Pro transmission, I have not tried but it looks feasable. You would need at the very least, new gearbox new belts new centre double pulley all the pivots and equaliser for the centre pulley, as well as the tension spring. This would not be a cheap exercise and would require more research first to ensure that the roller bracket and the under chassis are the same. Better IMO to sell the 56 v/s on the bay and buy a new 56Pro or similar.
