  1. Another example of the damage caused by petrol to carb components. This diaphragm has been attacked by petrol over the years and the petrol has leached out the chemicals which keep the material supple. It has then been stored dry and the diaphragm has gone brittle and broken up. The use of Aspen from new prevents this sort of problem.
  2. After a bit of searching on google we found that our website is doing quite well anyway, but on those searches where our site was not at the top then often yell was above it. In the two areas we currently had on yell.com we were achieving good ranking either by our site or by yell. Either way, we win. So we have renewed Yell.com, with the addition of a few more local areas, for around £250. We have aso totally ditched the yellow pages and will also ditch BT and Thompsons. Thanks for your opinions though guys. (Not convinced on Adwords, though, fine tuning my own SEO will achieve better results for free in my opinion.)
  3. A slight retune of the idle mixture and idle speed is all that is required. The " 1/8 out" is only an approximation. Some machines need no adjustment at all, but some require a little more.. Start by upping the idle speed on the T screw to obtain an idle, even though it may not be smooth. Smooth it out by adjusting the L screw slightly, possible towards rich (out). When you have a smooth idle just before the rich drop off point decrease the idle speed on the T screw to an accptable level. Check throttle response for a " flat spot" and as long as the response is ok all should be well. If you have to adjust the L screw more than 1/2 a turn return to factory settings and seek expert advice. Good luck Mr Tibbs
  4. Just checked all the Stihl documentation. It all says 1 turn on the L and 1/4 on the the H with top revs at 10000. Strange, as I have always found the Stihl figures to be spot on up to now. This has been one of the most informative and accurate threads for a long while. Informative posts from well informed people.
  5. Any dealer or repairer should have no trouble supplying Hayter parts. If they do not have it on the shelf they should be able to get them in only a few days. Most dealers will carry a set of frewheels in stock.
  6. Thanks for the input guys. I was set to drop anything connected with Yell but I had not actually checked what it was doing for me. My own website does pretty well in the google searches, and where it does not is due to my lack of effort. A few rewrites of content or the addition of an extra page here and there sorts my site out, but still my own site is sometimes beaten by Yell.com, so we still win and its not too expensive. Still pondering ths one, as well as editting my own website to optimise it.
  7. It is time to renew our contract with Yellow Pages and we have decided not to. But what about Yell.com? Do any of you use this, does it work for you either for attracting business or for finding suppliers?
  8. From one tool to another... Sussex Groundie wins the title of "top techie" for today. It is in fact a Briggs and Stratton tool for levering 1/4" fuel hose from hose tails on tanks, carbs, taps and filters. So much better than messing around with pliers and flat screwdrivers. Part number 19600 @ just under £6.00 plus vat, available through any good Briggs dealer.

  10. They all seem to think that its only their grass that grows, and that we don't realise that. The other favorite reply when we say the mower may be a week or 10days, is " thats no good, my grass will be knee high by then" Maybe they are very short people.

Customer with a blunt chain " i have only used the saw on two occasions, it should not be blunt already" Customer with fuel blockage on his mower " its only a year old, cant be dirty already" Customer with bent bar on saw "must have been bent when you sold it to me, I've done nothing to bend it" Time for a drink.
  13. The most important thing in your case (after sharpening the blades) is to find out why they hit. Did the timing belt slip on the toothed pullies? If it did it was too slack. Did the timing belt break? Or have the blades sheared the pegs on the blade bosses (if fitted)
  14. Ride on mower blades are not that critical about balance. Sure, there needs to be roughly the same amount of metal on each side, but a few grams won't really hurt.

  16. Did a bit of googling Irish prices, but without much success as not many dealers seem to have embraced the web. Did find a HS45 hedgecutter which appears to be nearly 50% higher in price than the UK full retail. Thats Crazy. Wish I lived at a ferryport to Ireland.
  17. the uk price in eurothings is 347.21 inc vat at todays rate, so the irish must have a higher retail then.
  18. Just use a punch and tap it round, or an 18"stillson. Or the proper two pin wrench, although where you get one I have no idea.
  19. The UK price before vat is around £ 245 and jonesies price, for instance, is £179 plus vat. Difference of £79 inc vat. What is that in eurothings? Is the Irish retail higher than than the UK, and do Irish dealers not offer any discount?
  20. One of my customers lost his hedgetrimmer whilst it was still running! He put it down whilst he moved his ladder, a car pulled up and an arm reached out of the drivers door, yanked it in and sped off!
  21. Really? The max saving you can possibly make is £66 plus vat, assuming you get the very cheapest UK deal over a full retail sale in Ireland. Does that really cover the travel costs and loss of local warranty service? Why not try a Tanaka? there are plenty of Tanaka dealers around Cork.
  22. Some good answers here re the starter etc, but there is another possibility. These old twin cylinders had the pots at 180 degrees rather than the more modern V twin. They have a habit of being difficult to get past TDC on the firing stroke for several reasons. As mentioned, this can be due to a weak starter or a week battery, but could also be due to high compression from carbon build up in the upper cylinder. It could also be quite simply due to the valve clearances being too loose. This could result in incomplete scavenging as the valves are not open for sufficient time to expel the gases on the exhaust stroke.
  23. This is a 56. but the freewheels are identical. The shaft is supported in ball bearings on the 56pro, but yours will be in bronze bushes so check the shaft for wear. The sprocket would not come off this one either, short of setting up the hydraulic pullers. Time is money so out with the thin disc. Luckilythis time the freewheels unscrewed, they don't always.
  24. The extremes the wealthy go to to get a harbour view! Will be staying at the house in front of the tent in a few weeks, so will keep an eye on it from the rear velux.
