  1. This Honda mower is around 4years old and well looked after by the owner, although he has never had it serviced. He asked for my help when it became unusable, it would fire but die instantly. Dissmantling the carb revealed this mess. 40 minutes in my new Ultrasonic bath (the old one broke down) cleaned out all the deposits, but revealed serious pitting of the aluminium. The pitting will not be detrimental. The cause of the the problem is old petrol, which not only attacks aluminium but forms solids and absorbs moisture. He is going to use Aspen in the future to avoid further damage.
  2. I have never interchanged coils, for no other reason than I have not needed to. I was amazed to find that spud has, will have to remember that one. If attempting it then make sure the donor coil comes from a machine with the same diameter flywheel. Also check the obvious things such as bolt holes, but also check the coil diameter. When McCulloch changed some coils a few years back the diameter was greater and therefore required some spacers between the coil and the chassis, otherwise something cracked when the coil was torqued down. I think there will be very few interchangeable units though.
  3. Bunch of softies on boats with roofs...... real men drive ribs:biggrin:
  4. But nowhere near as much fun!
  5. I hope there was no problem with the postage Dan, why did you have to collect?
  6. Not feeling shut out at all mate, just don't want to post for the sake of it, or to duplicate what some other techie has said. I like to pass on useful tips, usually with pics, but lately most of my work has been run of the mill. Loads of carb rebuilds, fuel hose replacement, ignition modules etc as well as thousands of hedge cutter teeth sharpened. My ears are ringing from the noise of the grinder at the end of every day, and my clothes are so full of grinding dust that they rust.
  7. I'm still lurking around the site and keeping a watchful eye on the posts. Ready to step in and flame anyone who talks rubbish, but no-one does:biggrin: Seriously though, I have been very busy of late with an unusual amount of two strokes for the time of year, but mostly mundane stuff not worthy of a mention here. And. as you know, I have no interest at all in this porting business which seems to dominate the thread at the moment, but watch this space.... I will be back:biggrin:
  8. John Deere used to have their pedestrian mowers made for them by the esteemed German manufacturer SABO. They liked them so much they bought the company. The R54RKB is a chunky machine. It does a good job of cutting and collecting, even in wet conditions and is a very good buy for the domestic user. I have however ceased selling them to PRO users, as the rear rollers and transmissions cause problems. The 47cm versions are fine though. The Kaz (lawnflite pro, sarp, asuka etc) are in my opinion the best bet for a 53cm rear roller mower and from now on are all that I will sell to the commercial user.
  9. These new ramps from Rochford look handy. Welcome to Rochford Garden Machinery Ltd.
  10. You just can't beat a good 2 stroke.
  11. When you put it back together use a T27 torx. Using a 25 when you dissmantled was probably why it was so difficult. Many sets dont contain a T27, you may have trouble getting one from DIY shops.
  12. Nice night of gentle rain. Lovely:001_smile: This will get the grass growing again.
  13. I once had a Trooper with a lovely bar on the front. I was well chuffed with it but my daughter said to take it off as I would kill a child if I hit one. I took no notice as the Trooper would look 'soft' without it until one day a kid ran out in front of me. I missed the kid and he carried on into the oncoming lane to be hit by a Sierra (it was a long time ago, when Sierras still roamed the earth). This boy was gently swept off his feet by the sloping front of the car and rolled neatly up over the bonnet, around the screen and back to the floor. He got up and ran away. He would not have been so lucky if hit by the horizontal bars on the Trooper, so they were off the next morning. One teenage daughter gained some power over dad then.
  14. Dont feel too bad about it. It has happened and if anyone had tried to tell her otherwise it would have happened sooner. If you try tell her now you will cause upset she does not need, and you cant change what has already happened so make the best of it. This happen to all sorts of people from chavs to toffs, its not who you are but how you deal with it that provides the best outcome. She need love and support from her nearest and dearest. She will find out about the bloke soon enough.
  15. I did not get any pics of this, but today I had a Lawnflite brushcutter in that would not start after the owner had 'serviced' it and repaired the air filter cover. He had lost the short 15mm M5 screw which held the air filter cover on, so replaced it with a 40mm self tapping screw, which had 'self tapped' (as they do) straight through the side of the carburettor:biggrin: The air filter was nice and tight though.
  16. Sure, their repair work may suffer a little, but only from those people who don't understand petrol/oil mix, or manage it poorly. Repairs to machines damaged by the above factors seldom make the dealer decent money as the customers want to blame everyone but themselves, so the dealer is often better off without this sort of work. The dealers footfall through his door will increase dramatically when he stocks Aspen and the Aspen user will still have his kit serviced, as it still goes blunt, bars still wear and clutch springs still break. Air filters still need cleaning and chain brakes still need attention. But the engine and fuel system will stay in good order so the servicing will be much quicker but he can still charge the same.
  17. I dont suppose too much harm is done, it only sold for £7.61
  18. googled this China Stihl Chain Saw (MS 070) - large image for Chain Saw
  19. Nice find there Steve.
  20. Aspen also has a lower vapor pressure and is therefore more resistant to vapour lock.
