  1. Ha, not just one!! 3 & 4 are still very good, their biggest handicap is weight. On standard tyres, slick surfaces & a bit of an incline and they're about as effective as a Williams FW on the Network Q. But dress them in the right boots and their driveline and suspension systems make them virtually unstoppable when it comes to negotiating awkward or rough stuff. That said, for what most of us need, ie something to pull across a soggy patch, there are better vehicles out there. Freelander 1 is best in reality! Or Suzuki Jimny! I personally have no real experience of Toyotas apart from a bit of towing with a mid 90's 4.2 LC which I really liked, and a childhood obsession with the Hi Lux & 50/78/79 LC's which, along with Patrol's seemed to be everywhere in the late 80's in Tenerife! I do think they're the king of the oriental stuff, but apart from maybe for belting across the outback I don't think I could go for one over a Land Rover.
  2. Thought about a Disco 2 Commercial...? You'd lose the open pick up bed but gain better security, useful loadspace, spacious crew quarters [could easily install the proper second row seats for full 5 seater capacity] good towing & off road ability and a lovely drive on the road... 2003 Land Rover Discovery TD5 Commercial | eBay Or this one... ready to go! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Landrover-Discovery-2-Commercial-2004-87-000-Epsom-Green-/220957240588?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item337213ed0c
  3. Wonder who will be the first to get one of these then...? I'm going to add it to my christmas list jst on the off chance!
  4. I'm not the only one then....
  5. It's a good forum, I used it extensively when I bought my Disco to sort out little odds & sods, it saved me a fortune I think! Haven't used it for a long time because nothing's gone wrong but if and when it does I'll no doubt be back!
  6. Best place to ask this is probably Land Rover UK Forums - Land Rover UK Forums... I remember this coming up once upon time... think it's somewhere behind the instrument binnacle...
  7. The rear shocks have gone on the wife's car so whilst trying to find 'shock absorbers' in the internet, Google threw out this little gem. http://www.shockabsorber.co.uk/bounceometer/shock.html For purile idiots like me it's 'hours of fun'. However, in all seriousness it may be useful for any lady arbs who suffer discomfort? It may not though, I don't have them [not yet anyway...] so what do I know, and you probably already know all about this stuff.... In fact, any tubby boys feeling they lack the support they desire might find it interesting too...!
  8. Have you watched that guy's other videos....? Kind of makes your own life seem like some kind of miserable failure... When I die I and come back I think I want to be American, they seem to do all the fun stuff and have all the best places to do it!!!!
  9. Awesome, love the camera taped to a golf club!
  10. I use that horrible nylon 3 strand type stuff... I heard they use bare handed throwlining as a method of extracting information at 'Gitmo....
  11. Gloves Pete! They do have their uses you know! I always set one off without, then don't forget to put them on for the rest of the week...
  12. Like Will have a good look round there later...
  13. I've wondered the same thing, I isolate my anchor and throwline to get up ddrt [should I not be..?!] ... I use the 'swing a cat' method.... I have been considering using a low weight throw bag and one of those 'powerful' handheld catapults to get a line up, like a 'Black Widow' type... But that's down to expense really... A Big Shot is only as powerful as you pull it...
  14. Nice! 2 things: 1. Disappointed it didn't break into 'I'll take your brain to another dimension. STOP! Pay close attention'. and 2, I thought you were going to get a butt in your face at about 1 minute, thought the groundie could have let it run quicker...! [Although probably not as close in reality as it looks through a helmet cam] Good stuff... STOP! Pay close attention....
  15. Aah, the good old, 'burnout, Hoover, reboot' technique, works almost every time, usually...
  16. Some insurers certainly do require evidence that they're gambling on people who know what they're doing. Others take a bigger gamble on more people to balance the risk.... Don't forget that insurance isn't there to reimburse a little old lady when a professional makes a mistake. And those nice people we deal with are just brokers, it's the underwriters who call the shots, and nothing a broker says will really stand up in the face of the underwriters saying otherwise... It's primarily statistical gambling for the purpose of making money. They only justify it by offering pay outs in certain circumstances. I would be very surprised if your insurer, with photocopies of your tickets, didn't try just as hard to avoid paying out as one who took your money without the flimsy premise of 'only insuring qualified professionals'. I doubt they care very much, money's money, they just want to accumulate and hold onto as much of it as they can. Who knows, perhaps they would try even harder, they may have less money in their pot!
  17. Ok. Start / Windows menu > Control panel > Sound > You should then have a box with the different devices. Pick the one which looks most like 'built in speakers', click configure and make sure that's the active device. Other than that, sorry, I got nothin'!
  18. Hmm, not sure I can help you on that... hold fire, there's one the other end of the office, let me check if it's similar to XP in this respect...
  19. You could contact an existing training provider like these guys - Achieve Ability Plus ? Environmental and Land Based Vocational Training courses - [who I did my courses with years ago and who I'll do some more with when I get the time] and see what they say.
  20. Which operating system...?
  21. Perhaps AT could be a conduit for forming local working groups [a bit more structured than rec climbs] where experienced users can get together with guys looking for a bit of supported experience with new kit. It could work like this. AT could open a 'Regions' section of the forum, where requests for support could be posted or if you have been using some new kit and want to share your experiences you could make it known. Small groups could then get together locally and pool resources, perhaps make a few vids and post them all into a new thread on here. Maybe even manufacturer tech reps could take part as well, we could travel from other areas to join in sessions where the manufacturer is present. Sound like a good idea...?
  22. The exact same question I asked . I could only take his word for it [and hope nothing goes wrong to have to test it out!]
  23. May be a long shot but you could contact the builder [or developer or architect] - ask for the MD. If you come across friendly enough he might help you out with something reference the original reports. Explain to him that you've been called in to look at the trees and wonder if you're getting fed a line by a busy-body resident looking for something free. The trees look OK but could you get a copy of the original ground surveys & reports from the project. If he offers them, great, you can see what they found where and whether or not it is a problem. The reports may be flawed [sampling area could be just under the buildings themselves and genuinely clear, not uncommon] but it would explain how they got through. Things were already strict 5 years ago. If not, then he's either being an awkward git, has something to hide - although if this is the case LABC [or private BC surveyor who handled the project] have a lot to answer for - or somehow, again, building control need to own up to cocking up here as well, nothing was done and he genuinely doesn't have reports. That however is unlikely. To qualify, I work for a contractor and if I was in this builder/developer's position and someone offered me an opportunity to clear myself I'd bend over backwards to help.
  24. Fine if he has access to these things... On the basis that it's a voluntary job I imagine he'll want to use kit he already has in his box...
  25. And there was one before that which no-one replied to! http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/climbers-talk/35436-new-equipment-training.html And one in between... http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/climbers-talk/35784-what-do-you-do.html COT needs to subscribe to his threads so he can find them again...!
