  1. That's right, so what we all need to do is wear 'leggings'... preferably with nothing underneath....
  2. I think there's probably some half eaten food tucked under the sofa which is on its way to becoming a new civilisation... other than that I got nothin'! Ooh! Hold on! I have boxes and boxes full of boxed scale models of farm toys, Britains etc, which I'll either cash in when I retire or hand to the kids for them to pass down.... Probably about time I had a hunt round and added to that collection, it's been a while....
  3. Don't worry about that too much, as said, that would have contained chrysotile which was the most commonly used in construction and the least unstable. Amosite & crocidolite [brown & blue] were outlawed first and were more dangerous. In fact, I think chrysoltile was still legal as late as 1998... It's generally bound in cement to improve fire retardancy and tensile strength so unless you pound your roof sheets into a dust you should be fine. This stuff also isn't as tightly controlled when it comes to removal. I think you can actually take it to most council waste transfer stations / recycling facilties.
  4. Burying my uncle on Tuesday, asbestosis from working with lifts in the 80's. Not nice stuff. I encounter it frequently in my work but we don't go smashing through it with drills like they used to!
  5. Apart from preacher & prostitute, is it possible to find two more different careers?!
  6. Which one have you got Pete? I have the 'styled' one, think it's the smallest one. Did you find yours would relieve itself of all it's oil when hanging off a harness...? I find that infuriating, it runs out of oil halfway through a cut when it was full 20 minutes before...
  7. Cheers guys! It's all spend spend spend at the moment!
  8. Anything coming out of Afzal Khan's garage is an abhorrence and in my experience only bought by those with more money than sense. I'm not in the least bit surprised that this house of naff has created a military vehicle for Derek Zoolander. And DC100, biggest problem I can see is the lack of any backward compatibility with 60 years of Land Rover production which is going to immediately open up every market Land Rover leads for re-evaluation. And that thing ain't gonna win any work contests. Given the choice of that or anything else, I'd have a Hi-Lux... and I'm Land Rover through and through...
  9. If you're looking for a change of scene and a salary improvement, finishing carpentry is a better idea than tree surgery. For the phenomenal level of investment and training you have to go through to get into tree surgery I'm amazed at how crap the pay is. A good self employed finishing chippy should easily command £120/day at the moment, up to £150 and even more out of hours / weekends. If you don't mind working harder than you ever have before, risking your life for bugger all reward other than the pleasure of doing the job, go for it! Otherwise you might want to reconsider!
  10. I've abandoned all hope of that... just fingers crossed now someone will take them off my hands eventually...
  11. I need to pull my finger out and start working out how I can tick them off... wrong side of 30 now and have got precisely nowhere with any except 1st and last.... Charger, Chevelle SS, Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda or RoadRunner, Buick GSX.... any of the rare and valuable ones!
  12. Get my new business to work and build it into something my kids will want to come into. Drive anti-clock round the Med in a Land Rover. Get a bike license & ride across Russia. Heli-boarding into spring powder in the 'States or Canada. Drive some sort of early 70's muscle car around the US. Spend a winter in the Alps with my snowboard and a Lancia Delta Integrale. See all 3 of my kids grow up, get married and give me grand children.
  13. I have the Hitachi [although it says Tanaka on it]... Good points - Cheap Quite nicely balanced Good AV Comfy to hold, handle is nicely shaped Quite a large CC for the money Bad points - Chain brake a bit flimsy Bit of a bugger to start -not as easy as they make out and certainly not as easy as a Stihl, although it pulls over easily Doesn't like hanging from a strop, chain oil has a habit of running down the bar Bit underpowered, although that may just be because mine was shipped with a 14" bar and would be far better on a 12" or even 10" Would I buy another? If I could afford a 201, no, but otherwise, definitely... find it better balanced than a Husky I picked up the other week...
  14. Best advice... haircut...
  15. Hamlet had a skull Village had a People Town has a Wetherspoons City has a race relations problem...
  16. Thanks Pete... maybe I should have made it a bit longer for you!
  17. Thanks to everyone who has filled out my first survey. When I signed up to it I didn't realise a couple of things, one that a free account was as limited as it is and two, that I would get such a good response. I have produced another survey to help me understand how we all use the magical world wide web, if you could complete this survey as well it would be HUGELY appreciated. Thanks guys & gals... 18. Not strictly true, that just makes it a Cathedral City, like the cheese. Newish cities may have had city status conferred onto them without having a catherdral although I couldn't tell you which these are [i know Birmingham became a city first and got a cathedral later...] Pete's right about hamlets, villages and churches. What I'm not sure about is what exactly the point is at which a village becomes a town, I believe it comes down to facilities, population & governance...
  19. If they have a problem with someone working hard and earning a good living I wouldn't be worried what they think nor would I want to work for them, they clearly need the money more... Puts you a few pegs higher than them in the 'what I made of my life' stakes. One of our plumbing subbies has a couple of RR Sports, motorhome, bikes, boat, you name it. Which says to me he's good at what he does and that reassures me I'm employing the right guys [as I rock up in the clapped out pool car Mondeo!] and the last thing it makes me think is that he's ripping people off, you can only keep that up for so long.... certainly not long enough to achieve what he has...
  20. Silky might be a good idea Pete, at least to reduce the limbs to a handy size. I do a lot of tidying up with the Silky usually anyway, I actually quite enjoy it! And good point ref first aid kit, I got that Buxtons email, meant to get one of them, the Dragon kit wasn't it...?
  21. I thought the transfer boxes were the same.... every chance I'm wrong though... Diffs are quicker in a Disco / RR, that's an easy swap...
  22. Well done Matt, the only way is up..... Good luck with it
  23. There are 2 schools of thought out here Oli, one is that you should be supersafe and get someone experienced to do it for you. The other is that we all had to start somewhere and although this is a dangerous industry, you know your limits and the only way to really learn is to get some real experience under your belt. Watching people who make it look easy and fairying about on easy pruning jobs will only teach you so much. The best way to learn is by doing, just use everything you have learned already, most important of which is that you know you don't know it all, and plan, plan, plan.... then just take your time. The best thing to do is have a plan for if everything goes wrong. What will happen in these scenarios? 1. You get hit by a limb and are knocked unconscious or badly injured, stuck up the tree? 2. You start to drop a limb and it's heading the wrong way toward the road and there is an open topped bus full of orphans coming the other way? Those are the 2 most dangerous things which could happen, taking out the phonelines, boohoo, so someone has to use their mobile for a while, dropping it on a garden shed, it happens, concern yourself with imagining the most unlikely risks to human life and make sure you have a watertight plan to deal with them, even if it's just as simple as someone to stop the traffic while another gets help. Go for it, get a job under your belt, make some money, get some real experience and start to build your business. Calculated risk.
  24. Closet Hi-Lux lover wants one....
  25. Lantra ITA... does this still exist....?!
