  1. Anyone have any ideas of what I will need by way of liability insurance etc? Thanks!
  2. Not quite, in a much simplified state, you can offset some of the expense against tax but how much varies by type of expenditure. It's highly likely you won't be able to reduce your tax bill by as much as you paid in VAT. What it would do is reduce the amount of your profit you had to pay tax on, but you can still do this as well if VAT reg'd...
  3. And I wouldn't have thought there would be a problem with LOLER, the PPE element only goes so far as the hitch doesn't it... if they're being picky then the footloop & pantin grab / croll could be inspected, but the bungee & carbine hook aren't load bearing....
  4. Makes sense I guess.. quite like that! A Croll would make more sense than pulling another Pantin apart.... hmmm.... might try it....
  5. More power than you can handle clearly I had a chuckle the other day, passed a LDV 400 van weaving around a dual carriageway.... looking into the cab were what I presume to be 2 Nigerians or other central African gentlemen merrily bobbing along.... They were clearly not yet settled, their lane discipline and sunny demeanor suggested they hadn't been here long.... but what a shame for them, that their first experience of British transport was a rusty old LDV.... at least it gave them plenty of time to take in their new surroundings!
  6. How much?!?!? Hey... Why won't it let me caps lock....? Bloody thought police.....
  7. The RA coined the 'One Life' phrase before Land Rover, but it never caught on... One Life. Between all of us. They really do need to get IN more..... I can't bloody stand them.... Next time I have a spare afternoon I'm going to follow some home, walk round their garden, let their pets out onto the road, drop litter, talk loudly outside their window, be luminous orange, that sort of thing.... just to see if it really is as exciting as they would make out... I'm guessing not...
  8. Here you go... http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/training-education/38072-books.html
  9. And 'Nigel' doesn't write as though English is his first language either!
  10. I messaged him too, just out of interest... Me: Reply: But the plot thickens... Also received this message at the same time...? So I'll see what reply comes back to this [although I notice it's been pulled now...]
  11. I wouldn't suggest such a thing to my wife either so I know where you're coming from. She did let me wear the trousers for a few hours the other day when some of my friends came round.... she was out at the time though....
  12. Marko makes a good point, a carefully worded letter which requires the PO to actually produce some evidence in writing that they are acting properly normally does wonders. Council employees don't want to be noticed, once their names start coming up in dispatches that the public are asking questions about their conduct and competency, things can go bad for them. They will go after something if they think it will help them justify their existence, but if they think it might jeopardise their credibility and by extension, employability, they soon cool off. Research what he's said and try it, might see an end to it.
  13. As above, MS261 [my preference] or the 346XP... I have a feeling the Stihl may be a bit more expensive though...? If you can afford to buy a saw for your course go for it, it makes sense to be taught on the machine you'll be using. Same goes for all the other gear, if you've set your heart on doing this throw yourself into it and do it right, but make sure you research everything fully with one eye on how you might want to go in the future. Before you spend anything spend a week or two crawling round this site and watching videos on you tube to get an idea of what can be done and what kit it's done with. For instance, if you're intending to climb, you just as well make sure you get appropriate boots, trousers & headgear straight off, rather than buying ground equipment which needs upgrading in a few months when you start climbing....
  14. Sorry.... what do you mean she won't ride in the back of the tipper....? Sounds like someone's spoiled!
  15. I've signed up, my family lived in Rhodesia and left in a hurry in the early 80's.... I have every sympathy for anyone involved with that place... Edit! That was my signature!
  16. It's a simple thing... if most of your customers aren't VAT registered, you probably shouldn't go VAT registered. If most of your customers are VAT registered, you takes your choice. You should be better off at the end of it because instead of charging £500 you charge £500 + VAT.... which makes no difference to you.... but your VAT reg'd customer doesn't care if you charge VAT either, they get it back anyway. But you can get back that 20% you pay on top of your purchases. Everyone needs to take a look at their own books and decide what works for them. PS... have you traded up the rusty old LDV now?!
  17. Ha! So you won't be seen in front of your friends in your s&*tsubishi after all!!! BUSTED!!
  18. Fair play he has some MAHOOOOSIVE plums.... Chris Pfeiffer is good but I thought this guy was more fun....
  19. Quite a few climbers of other disciplines here... Drew's your man, he'll go up anything...
  20. If you have an NPTC tickets you are technically entitled to use the NPTC Qualified sticker, it doesn't say NPTC qualified tree surgeon though, mostly because NPTC quals are competency tests in machinery operation, a qualified tree surgeon is someone who has been to college... that will give you letters after your name, Dip something or BSc.... I am not a qualified tree surgeon but I could use NPTC qualified because I have 30,31,32,33,36 & 37...
  21. There's 2 sorts of NI, employee and employers. You need to start with what you can afford to pay then work back from there to see if it ends up at a decent take home wage. You also need to take into account their tax code which can have a [minor] bearing on what you need to deduct. It's not a straightforward question, start here though.... Employee tax and National Insurance : Directgov - Money, tax and benefits
  22. Defender 130 is actually still one hundred and twenty seven inches... fnar fnar geek hat on.... D4 commercial an AWESOME truck... do fancy one of those... SDV6 engine is a belter... Ground clearance wise they have better clearance than most 4x4's because they now have independent suspension.... although on 3's this can play up something rotten so that one which bottomed out may just have been on the blink! When they're up you'd struggle to bottom one out, same goes for a Sport....
  23. Then he'll have to try harder!
  24. I have to confess to harbouring a deep desire for a Hi Lux... have done since I was a child... but I think L200's, of any type, are woefully over-hyped... I accept that with big wheels 'n stuff they can look quite cool, but they don't have a lot of substance behind it... I think a 110 is a great working truck, their shortcomings are well known and documented and no-one goes into ownership thinking they're buying something which they'll never have to put a spanner to, even a brand fire new one. Which is maybe wrong but that's how it is.... We all buy what we like and can justify it perfectly reasonably to ourselves, but in just the same way as I wouldn't try to convince someone who wanted an crew cab pick up truck to buy a Land Rover, I wouldn't be persuaded the other way round either. Totally different vehicles which do totally different things. To my mind a Land Rover is a better investment and a more characterful ownership experience, but the sheer numbers of these shiny crewcabs on the road states that they must have very valid good points. Just none which appeal to me is all...
