It's funny, when you watch that video we all initially recoil in horror, but actually, taking out the sensationalising imagery, as said, he had a harness on, he was attached to as stable an anchor as anything we tie into in trees, [pretty sure the boom on the 360 wasn't hiding a fungal attack] the operator obviously had sufficient ability to carry out the task, and he got the job done in a few moments at minimal cost. The same would be possible here, I've hung off machinery at home to get to things, but in the workplace it wouldn't happen anymore. Instead we'd spend thousands on access equipment and takes weeks to achieve what this gang achieved in minutes. This is why the Chinese terrify me. Because they don't mess around. They flick two fingers to anyone who tries to influence how they do things, and their economy is growing at an alarming rate. It could have been made a fraction safer [actually, not safer, that's daft, 'more acceptable' would be more appropriate] by having a second safety line attached to the building but other than that, it was a great example of creative lateral thinking to get the job done. Fair play! Do you know the best way to slow down the Chinese economy...? Infect their public sector with the kind of political correctness, paranoia and pointless bureaucracy we have here. They'd be crippled in weeks...

I hammer the crap out of my Disco off road, either round the shoot, through the woods, often hauling a trailer, and it stands up as well as anything else, better even than some of the later shiny oriental offerings. I still reckon pound for pound a Disco is the best value multi purpose vehicle you can buy, far better value than a Defender, more comfortable, more useable space than a 90, better off road than a 110, faster, more economical. The question is... why buy an old Defender when you could have a Disco for half the price and do twice as much...?!

That's right, I can get £5m of PLI & £10m of ELI for 500 quid [give or take] which will cover me for all tree surgery despite me not having 38, 39, 40, 41 tickets and using nothing more than my word as my bond of experience. Which is good because it means that I can insure against accidents rather than smashing and running. But on the flipside it's bad because it means that technically ANYONE could get all the insurances necessary to operate professionally, without the skills to back it up. Although, are those people REALLY going to bother getting insurance anyway...? So no, the only time there becomes a real problem is if you make one of your employees do something they're not trained to do and something bad happens.

Those are windblown, you're referring to hung trees, which are an ENTIRELY different kettle of imminent death...! A windblown tree will have branches under both tension and compression and where they differ from felled trees is you didn't put them there, the root plate [if attached] will want to go in one direction, the trunk in another, it's like one big rubber band cat's cradle...

This is such a grey area. I thought that was the case, but it's since become a whole lot murkier so far as I can see. As I understand it, you actually can do it and you can be paid for it, and if anyone finds out you can't be prosecuted for it. I believe that where it becomes 'illegal' is if you are an employee and you are made to do a task for which you are not trained. At which point the HSE can take action under the HASAW act [or whatever it goes by now] amongst other 'acts of parliament'. I don't have CS38 or 39 but I believe that I am perfectly entitled to climb for money should I so wish, so long as it's on a 'self employed' type basis. I think it's as with everything though, it only becomes a problem should something go wrong. Grandfather rights existed in chainsaw operation when I took my CS tickets, not sure whether this is still the case...? Yes. If it weren't I doubt very much the likes of B&Q would be allowed to sell chainsaws...

I can't really answer that one with conviction because I've not done it myself, but as I understand it, when 'students' go there travelling, they just pitch up and use the local rag or word of mouth with other travellers, or an agency. But those jobs are more menial tasks I think, basic farm labouring, call centres, that sort of thing. If you want to do arb work then you are probably best off contacting employers directly from here and explain what you're after and how long for, just as if you were looking for temp work here.
