  1. Noticed a lot of firewood processing machinary for sale in June Forestry fournal, are people going out of business or gearing up?
  2. This legislation means eventually it will only be the 'Big' companies that do everything from office cleaning and building maintenance to Tree Surgery who will exist to tender for work. How can small companies compete, who often take a lot more pride in their work and have more experienced staff, if more financial burdens are placed upon them in times like now when everything is so cut throat with the prices. Does FISA not realise this will cause Standards to Fall overall in the industry, Not get raised ?? As a Contractor for the FC I already seen this happening, standards are falling despite everone having all the 'bits of paper', it will only get worse now.

    softwood?

Southern markets may be different to north, but I sell more softwood( in the north )than hardwood nowadays, it is quicker to season and easier to work with. It is best used on woodburners of which there seems to be an ever growing number!
  5. So sad for you, made me cry. RIP Toby.
  6. The wagons we use to haul timber in have built in weighing systems, 25 tns hardwood is between half and 3/4 full artic load if recently felled.
  7. We nearly bought a tractor off ebay a few weeks ago and it turned out to be a complete scam, fortunately the bank returned the payment we made after the bank fraud department checked it out, But, was unable to contact ebay, the site is impossible!
  8. Love my Lavero's, extreme comfort, can wear them all day every day! not expensive either. (Bought a pair of Haix recently and they are not comfortable at all!)
  9. Happy Cutting, we are trying to start processing our heaps, some lovely dry weather would be great!
  10. Bark looks like Douglas
  11. Back to original thread, 'Is wood dust safe to breath?', that is a good question...anyone know any research etc? A similar thought (should you wear a mask to move wood chip): I had a client a few weeks a ago who had to be taken in an ambulance to hospital, ended up in intensive care after breathing spores from woodchip mulch that had been left in a heap for a couple of weeks. she was moving it to top up woodland paths in her garden and ended up with serious fungal infection on her lungs, still very ill several months later. Chip was from healthy Lime trees.
  12. We bag it up and people come and help themselves, think it gets used as bedding in stock transportation trailers.
  13. I've bought a couple of these in the past used for climbing/lowering ropes, hard wearing and waterproof, very good value..
  14. 1st cuckoo's heard in Kielder forest 3-4 weeks ago, heard one on Saturday on and off all day nearby, listening to David Attenburgh on radio this week and he has not heard any yet!
  15. Learn to take time out, or else you burn out, thats said on the back of a lifetime of living and working in a self employed family,( a few have been workoholics!) we are not designed to do 7 days a week of hard physical labour and there are plenty of us who wished we had steadied up a bit when younger as it wrecks your body...
  16. My husband lost the end of a finger on a log splitter at the end of a long day and it was nearly dark!!
  17. Large sycamore on our property still shows no sign of leaves appearing, far too cold me thinks!!
  18. Dawn till dusk if we are busy, can be 7 days a week, but normally 5-6.
  19. Contact the Arboricultural Association, they run courses on Tree surveying etc suitable for Council tree officers etc and hold them all over the country.
  20. Yes a very fresh wind, sunny spells,...dodging the showers out doing firewood deliveries.
  21. I have a table in kitchen made from Elm we cut 12-14 years ago, (9 x 4 ft) and it is a beautiful colour, sort of between Oak and pine, lots of nice markings etc, and we kept the edges natural (wavy), I oil it sometimes with whatever I have around!
  22. I've just split a manky great lump of pollarded Lime that has sat in our yard for a couple of years and it was still sprouting leaves!!
  23. Liked my free burger, but not the heavy rain! Still not made up minds about what and if to buy on the log deck front...
  24. Can't fault this guy, been subbing for us 5 months and he is 1st class, 100% genuine. reliable and hardworking, wish we had more work for him!
  25. Agree with all your comments, customers are often really pleased to see a women on site, never had a negative experience, and LOVE my work!
