  1. My other half has been the best partner in marraige and business anyone could ever ask for, I'm incredibly proud of all he has achieved through sheer hard work in over 30 years I've lived with him, He is an amazing tree surgeon and I am inspired by his passion and love of trees every day we live and work together..
  2. Can you call the police and ask if there is anyway they could help out without scaring the old boy!
  3. Saw this last weekend, thinking of billets too, The large lengths of timber were split into billets on a Posch splitmaster, the company using it bought it from Germany, and use a processor for small diameter timber, you can watch a you tube video of a 660 sthil saw cutting through the billets at this link:Produkte - HAF Präzisionstechnik - Profi-Sägebock - Biessenhofen / Altdorf
  4. someone that sells firewood processing machines saw this too, and told me how impressed he was with the machine.
  5. Have you asked at the green waste sites? ie: Gateshead, I dropped off woodchips there as it is free, and was near work site, and noticed there was a lot of timber lying around.
  6. I was at the Linda Vista Garden (very near Mums house) a few weeks ago and could not help notice how sick the foxglove tree was looking, I saw it last year and it was flowering very late in year (October /second flush?) and looked in much better shape.
  7. I'm not interested in supplying anyone else with a boiler, they use 25 tonnes+ per year which is a massive amount of extra firewood to process, for each new customer, and they always want it cheap as they need so much. Let them sort out their own firewood and find out how much hard work is involved, and how expensive/difficult it is to obtain timber nowadays, season it and process it. Also I cant believe the customers with boilers I've supplied, who only have enough storage space for 2 weeks supply, and expect you to turn up every 2 weeks with bone dry logs whatever the weather....
  8. So would I!! the demand is outstripping the supply already, and businesses are still setting up selling boilers and stoves like they are some kind of gold mines, cash through the rhi seems to be the 'hook', but no one is co-ordingating with timber suppliers to find out how sustainable it really is (or Not!), or how this will effect building industry etc with prices of timber going through the roof.
  9. Was not paying full attention, but 'draks' was mentioned, maybe it is just powerstations..
  10. Radio 4 news a few days ago announced government is phasing out all RHI payments, scheme will end 2014-20. as it is unsustainable.
  11. Great end to week, if you saw my earlier post this week lamenting lack of firewood for purchase 2013-14 from FC / Kielder, who announced only 20 loads firewood for next 12 months available to sell to everyone! then you'll understand why I'm very pleased to have just secured 15 loads from another source..)
  12. Would love to cut more of own, and making efforts to find more thinning work. Latest news up here in Kielder is that FC only have 20 loads for the whole of next year to sell as 'firewood', these will go to highest bidder, and numbers limited per buyer ( I have this in writing!), so we are looking to find other suppliers for softwood, which is not easy with crazy amounts needed for biomass up here! How is the situation down in your neck of the woods?
  13. Both, but most bought in now as it is easier,
  14. We love it to split and handle, seasons fast, but can go mouldy, & I think, spoils the load , not found a solution yet. thinking about trying vented bags...
  15. Quiet, few loads per week, processing like mad!
  16. I met an Iosh/ H & S guy at an Arb Ass event and he was horrified when I told him about my customer who ended up in intensive care after shovelling 2-3 week old chip in her garden, and has been ill for several months with severe fungal infection in lungs.
  17. I may have said this recently somewhere else, but a customer of ours, ended up in an ambulance / intensive care after breathing fungal spores whilst moving wood chip around garden, still ill now... need to warn about this, maybe advise wearing a dust mask?
  18. No Yes No Got one, seems pretty indestructable to me so wont be replacing any time soon!
  19. :lol:But what else could we do, too old to change paths now!!
  20. Yes, it's hard in every way to make money out of firewood! reading the thread, everyone has similar problems, Firewood is our 'bread and butter' income through winter, and we dont aim at the 'Tesco' mentality customer,we try to keep the 'good' ones happy and they come back year after year. we make enough to re-invest in kit, but there is always thought on 'how to make this easier', we definately have not got there yet after 25 years!! I think that is because everything is always changing so much, prices, demand, whats available, customers etc.
  21. A friend who works in Moorbank botanical garden Newcastle has asked me if I've seen it on Sorbus before, as they have it in the garden growing on one, I've not seen it on sorbus, but thought someone else may have?
  22. https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/6461_667383299945698_1361953574_n.jpg What species have you seen this growing on? I saw this on an old yew this week - Thanks
  23. The stihl hedge cutter we have is very sturdy and reliable, well balanced etc if using all day, and our Husquavarna long reach is good too, although had some problems with nuts coming loose on the cutter bars last year. both give a professional finish and get heavy usage!
  24. Would like to have gone, will make a point of watching!
  25. Log baron: Thats what I wondered... could be any number of reasons though & just a co-incidence, but I've seen 3 companys selling all their gear this week, that does not look like 'upgrading'. Our nearest town has 2 Woodburner/pellet boiler shops that have moved into bigger show rooms as sales so good, one puts a lot of new customers in our direction and told me they are busy selling stoves. I Looked in the other new showroom on a weekday and full of folk looking at and buying stoves! so the demand for firewood will continue to grow!
