  1. so I take it youve had the odd drink or two in the Ken Brig hotel then timberbear!!! Ballmacellan is a real nice place to stay, used to work just along the road from there on the side of loch ken.
  2. timberbear, take it youve been on top of the merrick then, and some of the others, thats my old boyhood stomping grounds, some beautifull scenery in the galloway hills, some serious walking as well
  3. never mind the titanic, what about the poor iceberg...lol
  4. chris, pm me, im up in cumnock, so not to far from carlisle, i'll come and give it the evil eye with you if you want, worked with them for years, so know most of the problems
  5. the beauty is, that when your the only guy in the area with the right kit to do the job, they have to play by your rules
  6. by the way, whos supplying red at 70p, its a lot dearer just down from you?
  7. 1st thing, is it registered as an agricultural machine. 2nd, are you doing FORESTRY work, NOT arb work, rules are quite clear here, no grey areas, if you only collect from roadside, no, but if you actually enter the "forest" to retrieve your timber , then yes 3rd, you are restricted to the distance you can "take goods", but there is no limit on the distance you can "collect goods", weird one that?, and 4th, you can deliver, and collect from a dealer, or repairer, no limit on distance. with a carefull "interpretation " of the rules you can run on red as long as you do "forestry" work, just make sure youve got your story right and double check on the hmrc website, and print a copy off to keep in the cab, just in case your stopped by an overzealous idiot, you shouldnt have a lot of bother up here though
  8. out of curiosity, how many of yous now wear class2 protection, or even class3, you know that FC now require class3 with any saws that exceeed 20mtr/sec
  9. you can use as much cherry in your chipper a you like, its classed as plant, you cant use cherry in anything you DRIVE on the road, except where exemptions apply, and arbroculture isnt one of them, as for storagecheck your local planning dept and what it says for heating oil storage, and thats what you install....your cherry is for your heating boiler, isnt it! use the rules the numptys make to your advantage, dont fight them
  10. forgot to ask chris, what chain are you using, logosols own bars and stihl pmx chain produce a cut thats as near a finish cut as you can get with a csm and they only take a kerf of 1/4", so very little waste(325 pitch), the only other thing i have noticedis that your chain tension has to be spot on, and if your doing a lot of small stuff 10"-12" etc, they do tend to get slack between log changes.
  11. landrover market slogan "the best 4x4xfar" bollocks, why then is there a multi million pound market selling bits to make them better, there basic bits of crap, I've broken more, got more stuck, and generaly hate them more than any other working vehicle. Even the military dont like them any more, you cant buy one in the US, without a **** load of mods being done, 3rd world countries have loads of them lying about broken, cos the newer ones have to much technology in them for back street mechanics to fix. they became a cult symbol and lr pandered to that, get a real 4x4 workhorse, get a mog, the beast that evry landie wants to be when it grows up. ps an idea of how efective a mog is, how many aftermarket companies make uprated bits for them!!!!!!....very few...lol
  12. i sometimes find the same problem with my m7, it seems to be that to much power causes the bar to vibrate if your not getting a high enough feedrate, i find that not using max rpm, ie carefull use of the trigger against the load( you can feel the cut on the feed handle) usually cures this, the other thing i have been trying is a chain with a 0 degree grind, this seems to work well on smaller softwood, give Ruth a ring at logosol, see if she has any more info on the subject
  13. your choice of mog will depend on what you want to do, basic mog info, 3 different basic sizes(yes i know theres more, but these are practical)... u900/u1100... older round nosed models, u1000, u1200,u1500, "smaller chassis size" of the sbu range, u1300(usually ex military, basic spec) u1400, u1600,and u2***, large chassis models, you then have the long chassis options on all sbu models, either the model no. folowed by a L, or 50 in the no, ie u1200L. or u1250, both mean the same, then theres the 2000 series, you also have 3.6mtr wheelbase and 3.8mtr wheelbase options, and all this before you start on the gvw's of the ranges, next how many gears do you want, 8, 16, or 24, std, low ratio, and crawler boxes, axle ratios, std and high speed, front and/or rear pto's 540/1000 rpm options, plus high speed straight of the gearbox input. hydraulics,1,2,3,or 4 spool valves front and/or rear three oint linkages, and these are just some of the basic options. as for dealers, atkinson vos, or ac price, form your own opinions, good and bad from both, and yes they can be very expensive to run, or not, if your a good mechanicaly minded person thy are complex, but not difficult to maintain. I have worked on most variations of the good old mog for more years than i care to remember, and very rarely have ever had to admit defeat, the factory workshop manuals are among some of the best out there, and most mercedes benz commercial dealers are really helpfull. if you decide to go for one, try and test drive as many options as you can before you buy, good luck.....lol, youll need it.
  14. you cant "road register" a tractor, it cant be mot tested as it doesnt comply with most of the requirments of the construction and use act, it can only be registered as a tractor, or an agricultural machine, check the goverment website, as for the use of red, depending on the job, or use, to which the vehicle is being put, dictates whether you can, or cant use red on the public highway, of road, you can use what you like, and, unless your "tractor" has suspension on each of its wheels, you are limited to 20mph, irespective of what anyone may "quote" it can do...road traffic act ...
  15. your best back and limb protection is the same as it has always been, your eyes and pure COMMON SENSE, if in doudt dont, and if your still worried, get an office job!
  16. just to throw a spanner in the works, are you now aware that any vehicle trailer combination with a gvw over 3500kgs now requires a tacho to be fitted if used for hire or reward, and VOSA are prosecuting along with the old bill !
  17. when i did my first "first aid" training many many years ago, we were taught techniques that many paramedics today havent even heard of, as rupe says the "green box" is a basic standard that fits a multitude of industries, what extra you choose to carry to suit your needs is up to you, I personally carry celox, in granular form, and in an impregnated battlefield dressing, and if the injury is severe enough to warrant its use, I will use it. you have to ask yourself "how long to get to your nearest A&E" and wiegh that against the severity of blood loss. yes casualty departments dont like it, its a pain to clean out of a wound, BUT it does work. and it has saved lives,if your going to carry it, get the proper training and information on its use (ask at your nearest hospitall trauma unit) and keep doing the std first aid courses, they may save your mates life some day.
  18. just be carefull the engine doesnt start to run on its own oil, ive seen a few td5s do it when they blow turbo seals, you cant stop them and they can run till they self destruct
  19. your uzi's an ingram...lol
  20. very nice trollspiel, did you hand or machine plane the timber after it was cut on the alaskan, I like the cabinet doors, as you say, straight lines =ikea look, the wany edge is a definate look of hand made
  21. not all my work is loud, and round here lots of the clients dont want you working on there property through the week when they are working and clients might be conducting business meetings, so ground maintenance has to be done at the weekends, which for me are usually wed-thursday, which are far more usefull, everywhere is open. and as for loud saws, theres usually more noise from folk cutting there grass, or the la fixing roads(cant seem to do it through the week, so double time at weekends brigade)
  22. a man who knows his mill, beautifull work canoehead, love to see some pictures of it when your finished
  23. your skill is awsome
  24. 0800, same as any other morning, whats so special about sunday, or saterday or friday, there just days of the week, and if you work for yourself theres no such thing as a weekend, you work when it suits the customer, end off!!!!
  25. monkeybusines, you are clearly unaware of the diversity of the mog, not have enough power to run a large chipper?, what planet are you from, mogs have anything from 100bhp to some with over 300bhp, hire in a 50kbox tractor, why? it is still only allowed to travel at 20mph on the road, the mog can travel at 50mph, big difference. till you have operated with a mog, and can grasp all the possibilities that it can fufill, either do your research, or dont say anything
