  1. NPTC are a private company in the business of making money, like all others, its in there interest to have you renew your tickets, do you have to resit your educational certs, or your driving licence, its the same thing, youve completed the course, passed it, and been awarded a certificate, for , which I assume , you paid, as long as you yourself fell you are safe and competent, and your employer is happy...your good to go.
  2. as your certificate is not a legal document, how can it expire ?, it is only proof that on a certain day, an individual deemed you were safe and competent, in his opinion, to use a chainsaw.
  3. this is another one of the urban myths that keep springing up concerning towing.... is your vehicle capable of exceeding the posted speed limit, yes, can you be charged therefore of speeding because your vehicle is cabable...NO, same with your trailer, you can ONLY be prosecuted if you ACTUALLY commit an offense, having the capability to do so is not an offense...It doesnt matter what plod or VOSA might like to think, It is what is actually written in the statute books, I know of no-one who has been prosecuted with an intent to tow more than they are licensed to tow.
  4. again I ask the question, what law has been broken, yes somone has quoted various acts etc but where is it actually written down int law that the minimum ppe that shall be worn, or is it such that no one will actually commit and state it, or is that even these acts dont actually demand, but only advise, come on someone, dig into these and actually shed some light
  5. can someone please tell me what actual law did this guy break? as far as I can find out all the HSE guidlines are advisory, not actually compulsory, backed by legislation passed by an act of parliment, the guy should declare his company bankrupt, and resart under a different name, seems to work for all the big "tory" backed ones
  6. you need to check on both the vosa website, and the road traffic act websites, the laws concerning what you can, and cant do with tractors and towing have so many loopholes and grey areas that theyre a nightmare, but as for lights, horn, wipers, there is NO test for agricultural machines, and plod CANNOT force you to comply with his made up ideas of the law, as for weights check the construction and use regs, i know with the mog its 29.4 tonne gtw so work it out from there
  7. nice bit of burr there timmy, what kit you using to mill it
  8. there are 3 different ratios available on the n16 pto output Ive seen quite a few things run off them, usually reserved for hydraulic pumps, but generators, fire pumps , compressors, and some weird attachments, you would be able to run a hydraulic powered chipper no problem
  9. throw a highwaymans hitch round the pole, descend on your figure 8, pull the unlocking tail of the hitch, no need for all the fancy modern crap, old school at its most basic
  10. what you got fitted?, hydraulic pump, ac compressor, air compessor, om 366a or la, will have a look in the workshop manual tomorrow and see what i can find for you
  11. how do they manage to get round the age discrimination bill, this add is definately ageist.....lol
  12. I've found 1 1/8 oz of no6 tends to get them out of the trees with no problems, dont even have to get any ropes out
  13. Like yourself Chris, I've been experimenting a bit, depending on how hard you pull/push the bar through the timber effects the finish, ive also tried cutter angles down to 0 degrees, this coupled with raker heights, really effects sppeds and finishes. I've also found that the drier/ more seasoned the timber the more chance of getting the washboard finish, adding a water drip seems to stop this a bit. I've also chatted with some millers in the US, and for big stuff there using harvester bars and 3/4 pitch chains, a lot of wastage, but on the sizes there talking about, it doesnt seem to bother them, some are even using 4 stroke motors up to 25hp on setups a bit like the bandsaw mills, oh how i wish we had the resources and time!!!!!
  14. I used to give blood regularly, but after having worked in some strange parts of the globe, Ithey wont take my bloob any more, I would still donate if I could, and anyone in a profession like ours should be the same, you never know when it might be yourself that needs it
  15. all you folk still arguing about "why use a mog", simple...19ton on the drag, 2 ton in the back, and still legal, let me see you do that with your landy/transit/iveco truck !!!!!!! mogs rule
  16. the table and chair complement each other perfectly, hows your hands after all that routering, Ive been doing some signs for our local woodlands group in the pat week and after routing an A3 pocket14mm deep in elm, times 4, the hands and fingers dont half tingle.... forget an av chainsaw, its nothing, again you are a very skilled man, keep up the good work
  17. logosol have a 3phase electric chainsaw option for there mills, they reckon its twice as fast as a conventional chainsaw, its the most popular option on the ones they sell in scandanaviun countries
  18. cut a fair amount of spalted beech and spalted elm today, tried water cooling for the first time in a serious way, didnt notice to much of a difference in the beech, only 16"dia logs. but what a difference in the elm, 22" dia, it was almost like cutting someting half the size, and the finish, 1 pass through the planer, done, only a 1/32" cut, going to try it on larch and sitka tomorrow trees have been down about 2 months now so should be interesting as i normally mill the same week as felling.
  19. depending on whether youve got a chipper on the front or back linkages, an agricultural transport box on the other set, make up a lockable lid and your problems solved
  20. do it like the full size pickups, make your plywood box to the height of the metal sides and include stake pockets to fit larger boards, dont know why manufacturers over here have never included stake pockets on there pickups
  21. just a frew drops of fairy, seems to stop the resin sticking to the bar acording to our american pals, the other thing i thought about was soluble cutting oil from the milling machine, Ive got a source for that, and the synthetic stuff mixes down to about 5000-1 ratio, wont cause the chain oil to break down either, Ill give some a go tomorrow, got a load of 4x4 posts to do from some larch
  22. vertical shaft 4stroke of around 10-15 hp is the ultimate way to go, you can use a 3-1 step up in the drive and this gives a drive sprocket speed of around 9k, depending on your engine rpm, and the torque off a large 4stroke, well, youll chicken out before it will !! theres quite a few good threads on some of the american sites, though most of them tend to go for bandmills, supose its 'cos theyve got a better choice, but you cant beat a csm for flat and true boards
  23. are you hand sharpening, or using a grinder, i thought i was pretty good at chain sharpening till i moved over to grinding, I imediately noticed a big improvement due to every tooth now being the same, plus you can play about with your angle to find the optimum for what you are cutting(I've found it varys between 0-10 degrees, dry hardwood to fresh cut softwoods) I've also been looking at watercooling, theres been a couple of posts on the american forums about it, it seems to give good results, logosol themselves have a kit for the electric chainsaw mills. I've been quiet latley because of other comittments, but the mill pile has been building up , so its going to have to be busy again, I'm going to try water cooling, with a litle fairy liquid added, see how this goes, I'll keep you informed
  24. have a look on atkinson voss site, they are doing a retro fit 3point linkage kit for mogs, you might get some ideas off of it, could be easier to custom build one rather than try to adapt an agri one
  25. very nice, not an ex utility (power) company one is it?, there the only operators I've ever seen with a similar set up. It must make take downs so much easier, I am so jealous, puts my little crane to shame
