Can you use a ladder? ;-)
  2. Also thinking of selling my Ranger Thunder Supercab. But only if the new Isuzu Dmax extended cab is up to it. Going to test drive one next week, but FlyingScotsman has me worried. I viewed it as the best of the bunch in terms of towing, load, engine size and value for money. As above, I reckon the extended cab/Supercab layout is the best option for the job. All the climbing kit goes behind the driver, all the saws, winches and rakes etc go in the back under a Mountain Top lid. The double cabs 1.5m bed is just weeny for rakes, poles, folding signs etc.
  3. I had a CV from a Polish lad who's been living here for the past 6 years. Even though the grammar and spelling were a wee bit out, I could see past that and seriously considered taking him on. May well still do, but can't afford to just now. It's a constant moan from several bosses up here that the youngsters (18/19) are pretty hopeless. Met a couple of corkers though, but one buggered off to Sweden (You know who you are )
  4. Used a friction device at the top with a gash rope attached to the butt to control the rate of descent. Works well. Or a long strop attached to the butt first if the ground is a bit more stony.
  5. Yes, they are rear heavy, but to say it's not a good choice is a bit blinkered. A 13" bar turns the 346 into a fantastic snedding saw and the 550 into a screaming loony. Just one saw in the wood and it will have a 15 on it, but if I'm dropping a big tree then the delimbing will be a 13 every time.
  6. Met a good Stihl dealer today Jon. He came along with the Greenmech rep. Talk about being bombarded with shiny stuff. 880 on the cards with a 48" bar. Decent price too.
  7. Rules are for the guidance of the wise, and the blind obedience of fools.
  8. The small black oil spout that comes with the Stihl can is pretty weak. Better to spend the few extra quid and replace it with the Stihl rapid fill spout.
  9. Yup, Husky and Honda recently. Hedgetrimmer, brush cutter and top handle. Stihl wasn't even considered because of its policy. I could fly down to London and buy an over the counter 880 from Jonesie, and do it cheaper than buying from my local dealer. The missus might even get some perfume from the airport shop (although that might be stretching it a bit) Husky 3120 is now on the cards. It's Stihl a silly policy.
  10. Do NOT do mates rates. It's not helping you out financially. If they are mates they help you out by paying the proper price.
  11. Best method I've seen is to hook the top loops of m3 bags in a forklift, forks at just less than a metre. Logs just fall in. Reverse and stack. Drive under the conveyor end and repeat.
  12. By the looks of it you might be burying her under the replacement tree! Missed opportunity for a video lunge though. :-)
  13. My 576xp hasn't let me down yet, pulls a 26" bar well and the AV is very good. On 18" it's fantastic and sounds and feels less strained than a 560 in the same wood. I bought it as it was supposed to be replacing the 372' but I guess that hasn't really happened. It's not an autotune though, bought it just as those models came out, so it'll be interesting to get a shot of the newer ones to see if they are much different.

    Tool hook

Use a Caritool, but removed the gate and then filed smooth the top of the hook. easy on and off then, plus easier to remove from pesky branches. Can't claim it as my idea, a couple of blokes from Huddersfield showed me.
  15. Impressive young man. Onwards and upwards.
  16. Garden planted Sitka. (The Devil's Velcro). In the woods, no problem - off at the base. In a garden they become one long b@*tard of a fight and swearathon. My Silky gets wielded like a sword in battle. If it even looks like catching on my kit it faces the long plunge earthwards.
  17. It is a great saw. We've had a lot of comments about not hearing us working. It uses about 1 fill of chain oil to nearly 3 batteries worth. Being able to communicate with the cutter is a definite bonus over the petrol saws. Full depth cuts wear the battery down faster as you would expect. Using it on Eco mode gives you a lot of time when pruning and more than sufficient to dismantle a medium size tree down to a point where it makes sense to go bigger saw. As to the battery drop issue, I've not heard back from Husky UK since they said they were sending on the info to Sweden. We are still using it, but with tiewraps around the battery housing to mitigate the risk. We can also replicate the problem with a recently bought t536. As it stands, un-modified I think it is dangerous, certainly to any groundie underneath.
  18. What did the amenity order state could be done to it Tommy?
  19. The only TPO I see in Dyke is the Church grounds, which that tree isn't. Who told you it was TPO'd? The protection may well be part of the house deeds though, which the council are unlikely to be aware of.
  20. The 150 isn't too expensive and if you carve a few mushrooms with it too, it'll offset the cost a bit. Grin
  21. Why not use a backhandled Stihl MS150 or equivalent. Incredibly light and nice clean cuts for pruning. Would solve the problem and any concerns.
