  1. How does the Throwpod compare to the RK though? What is the weight? Is it all rubber and does it bounce off branches like a rubber ball? (My Highball bounces like a good 'un!) Why is it black?!! Thanks.
  2. Yep. The one one in the black helmet has been with me a while and the blue helmet has just started. Every technical rigging job is a learning experience for every one though and patience makes it enjoyable, mostly.
  3. That is amazing. you lucky lucky boys.
  4. I took on an apprentice. He did 3 days with us and 2 days at Plumpton College. It works as well as the apprentice works, if you know what I mean.
  5. Good post Goaty but I'm afraid I can't offer any snippets of wisdom because i've been thinking about this during the last week and formed exactly the same views as you. We've planted some fairly big trees this year and the costs incurred to the client were high due to difficulties moving the heavy rootball on site. To me it just doesn't make sense to have many of the trees in root balled form. I also get more enjoyment planting a bare root tree, filling all the spaces by hand and knowing that I've done a good job and the tree will prosper. I don't have that same certainty with a root ball.
  6. Thanks Paul. Good reply. I can particularly relate to your fourth point: Is it worth it? Anything that makes my life easier and less stressful has to be a good thing! 👍
  7. Ok Paul, so you're our man on the ground now. Does it save/make money? Is it SO much better? Is it worth it? Can you give us just one overriding reason why we should have one? Thanks. 👍 Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  8. I agree completely with this. I would not be interested in any of the extras that come with it apart from the rubber sleeve that you mentioned you sometimes use above cars and roofs Thomas. I might add that i don't actually think the RK is overpriced because understand the R&D costs and manufacturing costs. For me it's just too much to spend because whilst I realise a RK would be a joy to use it would get me home slightly earlier a few days a month. If a traditional throw bag gets me to another job per week, that would make the difference but for me it doesn't. I'll still buy one if a UK retailer starts selling it at a reasonable price. 9. I'm felling a Coast Redwood in Reigate on the 28&29th. Access is good for any vehicle. I don't want any of the timber. It's twin stemmed from 5ft. One stem has diameter of 3ft @ 7ft above ground. Anyone want it and what will you pay for it as I have to factor the value in to the job. PM me or post here or call me, Al on 07834 414271. 10. Thing I forgot to mention about an apprenticeship is that at the end of it you'll have experience as well as qualies so the Apprentice position should become a full time job. Doing a regular college course means you come out of college with qualies and no experience so no one will employ you. Typically, college leavers think they are worth more than they are because the college has filled their head with the dream. Therefore they ask for a climbers job and too much money and get nothing. 11. Look at the SRT forum above. There is a good redirect discussion right now in the 'SRT Q&' thread. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. Try to do an Apprenticeship. There are few jobs around and an apprentice course means you're working whilst at college. Tricky thing is to find a good firm that will actually bring you on properly. Good luck mate. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. I was holding the saw whilst cutting and shifting my head around to look along the sight line. At that moment I didn't maintain pressure on the dog teeth and the saw moved away from me and out of the cut. Because my thumb was still on the throttle my rope was nicked as the saw went past it ( I was still holding the throttle a bit). These things happen in a flash don't they. Bottom line is though: If I had maintained the correct body position and weight distribution for the movement I made I would have maintained the saw pressure into the cut. It was my error but I just avoid it now anyway. I wasn't critisising you for doing it but only thought to point it out for other viewers. I have witnessed two guys doing it and one cut his leg, the other cut his dangling rope.
  14. Excellent.
  15. Very observant of you Big and good comments. The Bollard was cut into the stem and there was no stem taper. The back up sling I would normally use was a touch too short:blushing:. The back up ratchet strap was better than nothing and I actually put it on there 'cos I thought you lot would say "Tut-tut, where is your back up strap?"
  16. That's what I thought but wondered if there is something else. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  17. That sounds good to me. Quick, easy and very adjustable. It sounds the same as the Treemagineers Sirius ringLOOP. Am I right? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  18. Thanks BenR. Got it now. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. Snowed one inch last night, grid lock this morning! Life in Surrey. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  20. I do actually agree with all your points Pat. Sadly, many trees don't get managed properly and in my area there are many thousands of large trees almost entirely swamped with Ivy, soon to die. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  21. One question I forgot to ask, how does a Ropeknight extend throw line life? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Ok but how do you justify it when it swamps a tree and the tree then dies? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  23. Yes I'd use it. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  24. Are you mad Pat? It may not be now but it will. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  25. I you use a Jensen or Schleising or Quadchip, you won't buy a Timberwolf. Alternatively, wait a few more weeks for a new chipper from Raptor. I can't say anything but you'll be very surprised. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
