  11. there may be a militant come up for sale soon, its been restored and then barn stored for a few years has 20ton mechanical winch with spades and jib il get some photos when im next to it again
  12. I cut some beech earlier this year and was simular size and all went for firewood in the end. I would still cut them to 4.8 as you say as you never know someone may want them
  13. Got 25ton of processor size ash and alder firewood for sale, good access for arctic and all stacked roadside. 07751057259
  14. It was viable doing it but however you look at it firewood will always claim a price of 35- 50 a ton. its down to how quickly you can convert it and at what volume is weather you can make it pay is key hope that makes sense?
  15. It was down to the diameter and length of timber as 16" was the maximum diameter and 2m lengths but the retort was loaded with the larger timber in the 'hot spot' to gain best results, only one probe was used
  16. I wont say exactly what temp as we were using large retorts and wouldnt want to give you a number and your retort start having problems, reason for steady temp was that we had to be consistant and we found a +/ - drop of 5 degrees meant we either had a lighter char or a few brown ends
  17. temperature in the inner chamber is most critical to producing quality charcoal and keeping that temperature steady is even harder so a qualty gauge is key to the whole operation
  18. Sorry to confuse everyone i meant to say four seasons, back to an earlier question if you cut your 150 tons of timber it would take iro 20 days and if you bought quality wood in at @£45 metre would cost £6750. so you to keep cost down your will have to source timber and cut/ extract to ride side to make it cheaper and burn from your stack there rather than hauling it around the wood? that's how i would do it As ive only really dealt with container kilns which work extremely well i think the exeter is a little on the small side to make it economically viable if you bought one outright. I also have a plan for a mobile kiln but only at drawing phase at moment might have some figures soon!!
  19. id be interested to see what treewoods looks like and also what fuelwood come up with as rumor has it there yard is full of burnt out retorts!!
  20. just looked at the exeter retort video and looks like a few tweeks are needed but apart from that seems good, has anyone had any problems with them at all?
  21. Ah by the sounds of who you have described was the chap i worked with down here, not sure big k has any down here but there are a few who burn but not on the scale we did, imported stuff worked out like 4p a ton cheaper delivered in and consistency not there, it was paper soaked in waxy parafin mixture, think we used in region of 1000 ton or more raw material. i know he left not long after me he had the viper kiln as well when he moved off from the fens and believe he is probably still burning somewhere!!
  22. ive been following this thread and thought id let you know more about the big boys, i worked at tregothnan making the charcoal and it was hard graft!!! 130 ton in a year and yes the chap i worked for was a subcontractor. he delt with bio-regonal and rectella in the past. we could get average 900kg-1t out of a burn in one kiln with 4 kilns running cooling was 2 days then remove and store for another 5-7 before bagging which was done with a conveyor. loading a retort took half a day and a burn lasted 16 hrs there was drying time before as well. I could go on and on but dont want to bore people!!!
  23. Oil = 225 chain 260 bars x6 230 saw 600 files 40 2 stroke 78 fuel 1500 = £2933 Ppe 400 insurance truck and liability 800 diesel ??? I know its under £10,000 for a year so 260 days a year average £38.5 ive got it down to the last few years
  24. Whats the spec for the chestnut??
