  1. Urrggh! them saws ruin that bench!
  2. Probably worth investing in euro headstock as yes it may cost £300 or so but a few brackets and welding them will cost that. Type in "quicke euro" on ebay someone sells them for under £300 or a combi one which takes old style parallel brackets and also the new style, but nearer £500. Realistically how long will you keep tractor and how many attachment do you expect to use. We have pallet forks and a strong bucket. That does us for fencing and timber handling.
  3. After a stressful period of many months I went on holiday and got it. I couldn't much sleep at night and was lethargic for several weeks. I got it above eyes and in scalp. After meds all I can recommend is sleep when you can, don't overdo it for a long time probably 18 months as it tends to affect you and come back. Sorry. Just really take care of yourself alot. However different people are affected in different ways. Hope you have a quick recovery.
  4. Compact tractors need 4wd in this sort of work because they are so light. Even then the may require extra ballast. However the full size nuffield type beast would be good if you dont have far to travel. More power and weight for £s but need more room and make more mess, but quicker. The old Thawites type dumper is not very good rough terrain wet weather machine, in summer however would be good for carting cut logs around.
  5. Some people spend hours using a chainsaw dropping forests or cutting wood down to size. But only know how to use the saw. As for whether someone should work on a tree. Judge them by their pruning cuts. A butcher knows where to cut for best results, but would you rather a surgeon do your operation? It's all about reputation.
  6. Depending on size of timber and distance to cart, i'd go compact tractor with a choker chain from clarks forestry. If you have a frame or bar on link arms the front end of log will lift off ground like the arch. Because you need the rest if you can get it in forestry.

    Cpc

The way i have been told is if you drive commercially after that day (hire reward) without cpc, Big doo doo's if caught, but for example if you wanted to make your cpc last longer, after sept 2014 you could not drive until you do cpc. Then from your new cpc completion date date your licence would be re validated and expire 5 yrs later.
  8. Sometimes it is not a leak, but condensation forming on the poorly insulated aluminium roof sheet.
  9. Looks good would be interested in the video. I did a design a few years back on paper completely different but never made it. Im trying to work out a fast and efficient way of getting trees in but the continental planters don't suit. As I need to do it in uncultivated ground.
  10. I have used only bio oils for 10+ yrs I did use plant oil and have only recently started on supertack from Clarks, The plant oil never degraded in the ten years Whilst this is my thinking as well, Do you realize that people have been running round in Sumatra hacking orangutans to death and burning massive native forests down to replant with palm oil trees, whilst some is sustainably sourced. Much isn't and no real concrete in use certification scheme exists yet. I know the super tack has 10% palm oil, the plantoil is "mostly" rapeseed. Most hygiene products, shampoo, shower gels etc have palm oil under its various names in them as well as foods. So the sustainable argument is a bit like the biofuel one. Done responsibly it would be ok.
  11. THATS WHY PEOPLE BUY KINDLING! I have realised through that post. Its split finer therefore drys quicker, and now Im burning wetter wood due to over selling:blushing: I never use the stuff, newspaper and our firewood job done.
  12. Made in scotland from girders springs to mind. Some of the old boys are amazing.
  13. Had that it was good entertainment on those long winters nights, would of loved to seen the flue shot it outside. On a serious note though I had forgotten about that and that was helped by the logs put in fire and the air tube. The logs burnt out and created airflow for us.
  14. We did it in our top load indutrial type burner. Get fire hot stick afew logs in half fill with chip. It burned all night. If moist it needs a tube of airflow arranging to heat the burn. either a metal tube through the pile or something.
  15. You live here:001_rolleyes:
  16. Must get driving licence, it makes you reliable. Depending on others is not fun. Assume you are already in employment, if not get what job/work you can. Then you will have funding. As for insurance depends on size and nature of job. Up to a 10 metres is cheaper than working at 40 metres off the floor. Machinery etc. If you are just doing hedges and groundie work. Budget for £300 insurance. £600 max. as a ball park figure. I run tractor and lots of implements including chipper for that. As for going self employed, if you are self motivated should be good for you. Remember no sick pay(today a have a gunky ear infection not working) no holidays or other perks, but you are free to choose what you do and when. In your situation I get the qualifications done you need and a fund to keep you going ready, meanwhile working for yourself in your own time. Building up your work and name.
  17. Yes the uk has gone mad, alot of people have run out of seasoned firewood. I have an insistent customer that I delivered some soaking poplar too today. It had a good variety of fungi on the lot. I told her a month ago I had run out. She keeps telling me to bring more wood, she can burn anything, hopefully the poplar will educate. I do tell people no seasoned wood available. Many listen. Whilst they are feeling the cold people are obsessed with firewood, come the warmer longer days ofspring very few think to stock up for next season. Our ancestors were diserning and shrewd. Nowadays due no instant gratification, yes I think they are mad
  18. Be careful some of these big boys can be rude, very greedy and move goalposts, No doubt some good uns out there. But my experience with one has not been good. Be sure what the score is on paper preferably.
  19. depends on quantity, if only 500 or less it maybe better for you to order from a local wholesale nursery. If you are thetford notts try greenmile nursery, even though they do mature specimens, they have to buy in smaller trees to grown on. Also they will have excellent trade contacts, This applies to most wholesale growers and they will get frequent deliveries. The Uk trade is a small world these days. Otherwise Cheviot or alba for plugs I recommend plugs for pine Park farm for bare root.
  20. New Zealand for us when funding allows. Got lots of friends all over the place there. Not been for 2 years now. We go for 2-3 months around December - March. Have done that for way less than £4000 all inc I reckon. And not working whilst there. It really resets me physically and mentally. Imagine it will cost more now. With inflation, exchange rates etc. We live in hope.
  21. Edit: To slow about the training! Stick to your principles, otherwise you may regret for a long time, different league but would you kill an animal because your boss said so. Are you qualified to undertake the work? Ask for approved training. (Tales weeks and £s to sort) In the long run you should gain respect. I remember My boss asking me to lie in his behalf, I didn't. I was only a teenager at the time. They knew they only ever had to ask me something once to get the truth after that.
  22. Not to mock other trades, but some people who keep clean like joiners and electricians wear it because it adds to their "Pro Ego" But that kind of work is mostly dry and not hard on clothing. In that situation these items probably last well. Only my opinion though.
  23. I do this size in the oregon sawhorse. I can cut wood in August and have it down to less than 25% moisture by January. I am on the east coast and its always breezy though. If you cut to 6-8 inch perfect for granny logs. For me a requested product and alot easier to make as no axe work.
  24. Yes it would be nice to get this book back in circulation, I would have no hard feelings. My alternative is to go and sit in the local library and read it there, 10 miles away! plus the time. Or pay a stupid overpriced web price for a book that is out of print and some out of date info. I suggest if the book was just posted on if you know the location of it. End of matter.
