  1. Sorry, it was quite a while ago and I can't remember what his first name is. All I remember is that he raced cars - i think it's a bit of a family thing.
  2. I failed my CS31 when I put straight in for the assessment just after finishing my first Arb College course. Five years later i thought I really should get the ticket so did one days training with Kev when he was still at BTS and then flew through the assessment. It's surprising the bits of knowledge that you can pick up from proper tuition even after using saws daily for years. And of course they teach you how to pass the exam.
  3. I don't know about famous but he's certainly a hero - still climbing daily at 70 years of age.
  4. You'll have to check that with Dean. The HB20 that will be there is the standard one but is virtually identical to the new narrow access model. I believe that the standard HB20 is £6950+vat and the twin wheel version £7150+vat.
  5. I'm possibly looking at setting up a Demo with Dean in Cambridge that Will be open to anyone interested. Will hopefully have three machines there - the HB20, the 2250 and the 2550. Need to confirm it's ok with the college where the Stumps are but if it's fine with them I'll start a thread to drum up interest.
  6. Just the local MP (not meaning Military Police). I do the work at the university college that Oliver Rackham is a fellow of. In my previous career Suzanne Dando and also the brother of Vicki Butler-Henderson were some of our Clients.
  7. Does it have a tow bar for the chippers?
  8. Nice one Steve. I can see that being another preferred work method by the HSE. Pull tree over, prune, re-erect.
  9. I would give her more than that (add Sid James laugh).
  10. Haven't got a picture of it in the tree but this is what destroyed my brand new chain on the 372 the other day. I'm told that it's a plough shear. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  11. Triple stemmed Ash take down today. The union of two stems had a massive compression fork and unfortunately the only place I could rig and anchor into was one of these stems. Tied the weak stems together and fed my lowering rope through a pulley on both stems so that it pulled the fork together when knocking lumps out. Job went well until I mullered the brand new chain on the 372 hitting some metal Big ears Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. Thanks Tom, I've been considering looking into fleet insurance for a while now. As i understand you need three vehicles for a fleet. I wonder if they would accept two trucks and a bike.
  13. Sure, give me as much notice as you can. High Harthay is open every Friday but only every other weekend so if it is on a weekend check their fixtures on their website to see if it's open.
  14. is sometimes needed down the backs in mid summer. Would also be handy dealing with the punt touts.
  15. I'm a member there. Glad you enjoyed it, they're a really friendly bunch there. If i'd seen your thread and was available, i would have offered to take you shooting and punting myself.
  16. oh mate. That's hit adding a capital S. I didn't read this thread for a while thinking it was just going to be the usual "i'm gonna lose weight", "stop smoking", "trying to hate Stihl less" type of thing. Your young and have the support of a good woman and the Arbtalk family - you'll be fine.
  17. They do sometimes make life difficult for us. Cambridge City tree team twice refused works applications to the Robinia on the right and then a local firm does a job on the one to the left. In a conservation area, how very dare they!
  18. Hi Ben, You may feel that your copping some flack on your thread but my fellow Arbtalkers are just trying to point you in the right direction (in there own way). Please follow this link and it will explain why the work you have done is not in line with current British Standards for tree work. http://www.treesaregood.com/treecare/topping.aspx Unfortunately the vast majority of the general public don't know good tree care from bad tree care but as professional arborists we should trying to explain to clients why a thinning or reduction is better for both the tree and them rather than doing a top & lop job. If you have not done any college courses in tree care (other than for tickets), I would highly recommend that you look into doing one or at least read a book or two to self-learn. An illustrated guide to Pruning by Edward Gilman would be a good place to start.
  19. Been thinking recently about planning my visit to the Redwoods in this year. So far my thoughts are, fly into San Francisco, spend a day or two there - may do the Alcatraz thing. Drive up the coast on route 101 for the redwoods. Then head East with possibly a few days at Lassen volcanic park. Head back south stopping at either Lake Tahoe or Yosemite National Park. Back to SanFan for 4th July celebrations and flight home. Is there anything that i've missed that is a must-see in Northern California? Any advice/recommendation regarding accommodation would be appreciated.
  20. Thanks Mick. Yeah, guy I bought it off did work the land. £200 was what paid for it so I think that your estimate is probably right. Cheers, Ed.
  21. Anyone have an idea of value? Wanting to get a Benelli and would like a rough guild of what I could get for this. John Macpherson - Inverness Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Glad to hear Mrs Eggs is ok. Make sure that the spaniel claims for the black eye - and whiplash.
  23. Tried Stein, cutting edge and various other brands. The only saw that I think gets close to Silky for quality of blade/handle/scabbard durability is Samurai.
  24. Christmas morning walkies. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  25. Well that was a busier Christmas Eve than I was planning. First a leylandii up by the root plate. Then a fallen ivy-covered dead larch The, in the dark, installing a rod brace in a willow that had split down a weak union. Now I will be going out to try and find a garage open so as to buy a present for my wife. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
