  1. Mine is a Schaeff. Weighs in at 1470KGs, and packs exactly the same engine and hydraulic pump as the 2 ton machine. Nice one on eBay at the moment: TEREX SCHAEFF 1.6T MINI DIGGER | eBay JCB 1.5 tonners are gutless. No good for tree work.
  2. No, you can fit a small grab and rotator but the grapple once your used to it is almost as quick on timber (just knock the timber round the right way to pick it up). Plus you can wrestle out small stumps and clear brash with it more effectively.
  3. So where's the tipper if they have basin and tool storage?
  4. Lots on eBay, have a search Mine was cheap, it's getting a bit sloppy but works grand.
  5. I concur with the above and pretty much all the opinions before re workrates, productivity etc. 1.5t might be a little bit slower, but have proved to be profitable for me. The flexibility is what I like best- if you could make more money on a big job doing it faster, then just hire one for that job. Re the fuel- mine will work all day on 15 litres. Which is insane value for money. I'd have to reccomend a proper grapple though. Not too expensive, around £500 for a 1.5 tonner and worth every penny. With mine I can handle timber effortlessly, tease small stumps out and then grab them to dispose of, as well as carefully pluck saplings out, roots and all. You'll be at a disadvantage with a thumb and bucket as opposed to a grapple if most of the work is going to be handling timber and brash. Had a job a few years ago clearing 1-2" pine regrowth on the heath. Contractor had a big show on for the committe, blokes with clearing saws, bundling it to a chipper then painting the stumps with roundup. Sod that, me on the digger could do the work of the three men, no need for a chipper or roundup as you pull the roots out as well. Pluck, drop, pluck drop, pluck, drop, pick up the bundle and track to the next clump! It's been said time and time again- a mini is the cheapest man on the job. Your imagination is the limit. I owe a big thanks to Eddie here. He was featured in Earthmovers mag, saying how easy it was to grab a log and smooth out disturbed ground. So simple when you think about it, but I couldn't see the wood for the trees! :lol
  6. My LDV XLWB with the 2.5 turbo (pre Duratorq) Transit engine pulls like a train. The XLWB models have a lower geared diff, ideal for non mortorway work and towing. Suits me down to the ground.
  7. They need to hurry up and replace these ghastly engines with the 2-mix. Hopefully they will do so this year, they have already developed the FS-70 which would adapt to combi spec with a lot of hassle. So they have the engines and technology ready, it's just a case of whether they've sold the remaining stock of these unreliable 4-mix engines.
  8. You should all read this: Leather boot care | F R Jones and Son I far prefer the Mindle sportwax to Nikwax- it rubs in much more easily, no nead for heating the tin! Plus it doesn't develop that skin on the tin of wax as Nikwax does.
  9. Can't believe the oak in particular is any cop. Can you moisture test it?
  10. It doesn't look like they're had much attention. How often did you wax them? In my opinion they are worth about £40 posted. Bit of a gamble as to weather the leather is salvadgeabe.
  11. As said, that sounds right for two teams and an extra truck and grinder. Dartmoor- I think you and I are both more machine owner operators than running large teams. Different ball game.
  12. Thinking about it Eddie, there are a few giant reciprocating knife style hedgecutter attachments for diggers amout. Might be ideal for you, plus good for trimming up willows and what not. One here with a 1.8m cut: Hedge cutters - Excavator attachments for hedge trimming HTH
  13. A Tracmaster won't touch the sort of ground or amounts Eddie deals with!
  14. Fort all the way. Don't know how you lot use those metal barrows, they're so unbalanced. Most important thing is to spend £15 or so to replace the tyre with a decent one. It makes all the difference, less rolling resistance and down time to punctures is a thing of the past.
  15. Digger with a pecker and then a digger mounted stump grinder. This will allow you to go deep enough easily. Then clear up with bucket. Minimal tip costs and labour. Are you responsible for reinstating tarmac? It will need a sub base, ideally put the broken tarmac to one side to backfill with once the grindings have been removed. Compaction plate in the pecker would finish the sub base nicely for minimal cost.
  16. Don't feed the troll...
  17. Sniff. Sniiiiiffffff! What's that I smell?
  18. As it's already starting to rot I wouldn't waste your time and effort collecting it.
  19. And from the farmers forum: You're pleading the poor man here, then bigging up the profit to your farmer mates I think you'll find your actual profit is somewhere between what you tell the timber boys and what you tell your farmer friends:laugh1: Gotta make money how you can with what you got however. If folk don't like it then they can buy their own lorry. Same as many folk try to do their own firewood rather than buy it in.
  20. Been doing exactly the same on the South Downs today Small patch we've been meaning to do for ages. What do you use to clear the twigs and stuff up after you've got rid of the big stuff?
  21. Ahh.... I see. You do know there's much more than that available if you set the content filter to 'off' on your Google?
  22. So what happened to the paralell thread? What killed it?
  23. I'm typing this waiting for the rain to stop sat in my truck. I'm running an old Apple PowerBook G4 with a Three dongle for internet. Plus a car charger so you never run out of battery. It might look cool on the adverts, flicking a few screens to send an invoice, but I've been there with the iPod and sitting in the truck with a laptop is far more comfortable. Simple system, will do everything when paired with a £50 camera phone (for your calls, tunes and photos!) Nothing beats a real keyboard, it's comfy to use, lovely big screen. I agree re the iPhones- overpriced rubbish. I like the older, simple Apple gear before they became fasion accesories. I'm not saying that I wouldn't like a new MacBook Pro, but this machine does me great and is only worth about £200 these days. Then again, show me the 7 year old Windows based laptop that is worth that! I never have any problem with downloading updates, security alerts, viruses or any of that Windows crap. Hope that helps.
