  1. To be fair that's half the country he's covering, there should be a fair few places to stop
  2. Years ago I drove a Combo van around for weeks with mole grips clamped in place of the gearstick. You had to remember which way to twist them and whether to pull or push. Reverse was almost impossible to get. On the plus side it was the best immobiliser ever. I always say, it's only a bodge it if doesn't work. The old Combo was definitely a bodge. Other things I've 'bodged' are still the same three years on- it becomes a 'design improvement'
  3. They look like two of a pair. You may have dodged a bullet in that the 'good' one was also in the same nick underneath.
  4. I had a go on a loop handle Husky the other day and found it most agreeable, very good anti vibe. Stuck with Stihl due to all the (expensive) attachments I have. Can't complain about the FS-70 but the Husky was very nice. Not me that has to use em anyway
  5. Loop handle and throttle assembly to suit can be had off ebay second hand fairly cheap. Or you could just flog it on eBay for about £150 and buy a brand new FS-70 for £260.
  6. It will work brilliantly. That's by far your best bet, so long as the FS-55 is the loop handle model? Just be aware that the shaft in the FS-55 is flexible, and so if you keep sticking the head into thick woody growth it might break. Never managed it myself and they're cheap to replace.
  7. Wait until you get to London then pop into FR Jones.
  8. I'd pick them up whole with a telehandler and stick them onto a fire. That will be by far the most cost effective.
  9. What are you currently running? You could buy a new FS-70 and fit a second-hand head from eBay and stay under £350- this would give you decent kit and a new engine (plus a strimmer!), but make sure you get a good head that's not abused and can be sharpened. Stihl attachments are bombproof- all bar two of my seven attachments are second hand, but the FS-70 engines that run them I keep new.

They don't look cheap in the slightest. Check out their other vehicles (and prices). If I were a builder in London looking for a couple of new vehicles, I would be taking a trip to Southampton for a look at least.
  11. Yeah, Universal Trailers. Still going strong, or Blendworth Trailer Centre over Rolands Castle. For used trailers though, get on Ebay. There's bugger all to wear out or go wrong on a 750kg caged trailer (if that's what you mean by small).
  12. What are you on about, the engines weigh about the same. A Stihl combi system is jack of all, and master of long reach hedge trimming, medium reach pole sawing, tilling flowerbeds and edging. The only thing it's not brilliant for is heavy strimming, where you need something like an FS460 with bike handles and anti vibe. A 'dedicated' Stihl long reach hedgecutter or loop handle strimmer is the same damn thing as a Stihl combi system.
  13. 454 It's better spec as it's a more recent tractor. Still half the price of a 35x.
  14. I have four reverse gears And a shuttle gearbox, just select high, low or reverse. Both will hold their value. Both come from an era when things were built right- neither will be scrap in 5 years time. But one is far more suited to genuine work than the other...and much cheaper to boot. I've had both.
  15. Cheers, I'll keep an eye on that!
  16. Ay, but it's a psychological thing for me. Knowing that it's half an inch off the perfect length (no sniggering at the back! ) but that I can't just bump it out to run it at 100% efficiency. God, we're sad.
  17. How much are the catridges? I'm sure it was the price of those that put me off. I like this idea: Makita T-01797 Grease Gun Attachment | The Tool Corner
  18. I can see how that would give a good, accurate cut, and close to the ground too. But it would drive me nuts having to refill it rather than just bump the head! Interesting concept though- thicker line means less refills anyway, and less head means more power to the thicker line to compensate. Sir, I throw down the gauntlett. I challenge you to a duel!
  19. I mean it binds up in the spool. To be fair it could have been a bad batch- I've had to throw away a whole big spool of Stihl stuff before due to this problem. You are of course correct on the 4 way head- it does make the motor work a bit harder but it's easier on the cord. It's all horses for courses, hence my first suggestion that instead of 'the toughest 2.4mm' the OP should be looking for a thicker line. Any 2.4mm is brilliant for grass and light vegetation- above that you need thicker line or a 4 way head. Personally for grass strimming I take your way of thinking one step further and run the small Autocut 20-25 heads from the small Stihl strimmers on my FS-460s. Longer line, more accurate cutting.
  20. PayPal always sides with the buyer so I think you'll be OK. Not saying it's always right though Pretend the boot was on the other foot- the buyer could run the saw you sold him neat then get his money back! It's a right minefield. My life is so much easier now I buy new every year or two and sell the old one for a fair price locally.
  21. Got to disagree with Stubby for once, I found it no better than Stihl and more likely to gum up. Plus it's more expensive. TBH if you need tougher then you need to up the diameter. Or even better, run a 4-way head- this makes the most difference as each line is only doing half the work it would in a two-way head.
  22. I hate to say I told you so... Was it spares or repair/have you any comeback? Do you think you'll get away with a new pot and piston?
  23. No power steering, no pickup hitch, no twin pto, no power brakes, no power loader, no cab, only 1 reverse gear Why pay 4k for a 35x missing all the above when 2k gets you an International with all that as standard?
  24. Yeah, that's pretty much flat out for a 35x. Gutless little tractors. If I were you I'd sell it to an idiot collector and buy yourself two Internationals with loaders
