    Barn space

I`m looking for some shortly.Somewhere to base, store some logs and dump a bit of chip if i cant shift it on the short term.Park the wagon. I know a fair few farmers through shooting, previous jobs etc. Some are good mates, some i know not so well.No doubt i might get offered some for free, but its not really my way as everyones feeling the pinch and i`d sooner give someone a lift up as well as getting a good deal.Mates are mates but business is business. What i could really do with is a rough idea of what i should be paying and what i could expect in return for a decent amount of space for a small time operation. Not bothered about electric or water laid on.Its just storage at this point and security is not an issue as equipment will be returning home. What are you paying and for how much space? Cheers chaps.
  2. Might not benefit everyone, but i run my 200tdi on 60-40 veg oil.Veg is about a quid a litre from cash and carry. Those with a business can get an account right?I buy 40 litres at a time and you get points to boot.Whats not to like. It doesnt like straight veg as its thicker than diesel, hence the need for a mixture. If you look, diesel adverts say a percentage of veg oil or `eco`. The rules say you can use up to 2500 litres of veg a year without keeping records. I certainly see the difference.
  3. I find the `noodles` that you get when cutting with the grain make great kindling.Havent burnt it much otherwise apart from rejuvenating the stove when its been overlooked or the logs could have been dryer. However, it generates some heat and is an alternative to using it in my henhouse.
  4. I mostly put a whistling kettle on ours.A nice game stew bubbling away on a nasty day outside is a joy.We have a couple of big stew pots that can sit happily on top for anyone to help themselves during the day. Nothing too adventurous, but interesting thread.
  5. Had mine a few years.Wife bought it for me.Its the big one and a bit unstable with the cooking set on top.Especially as i trod on the fire base. Its never been the same since.Heaps better than a flask, but if its been wet i have to think about taking something dry and flamable but theres nothing better than firing it up on a break sawing, pigeon shooting or fishing.
  6. Had a good year on the shoot where my mates the keeper.Put a lot of effort when the poults arrived. There was a bit of illness but stamped it out straight away. We`ve also been right on top of the foxing although its been mostly on foot with nv as its too boggy to drive. I do saturdays with my lad beating and take one of the dogs with us.Bags have been well up on last year despite the weather and the grain being poor quality.I`ve done a few days in the week on another shoot this season so should have three beaters days plus a days walked up at the end of the month. I`ve also done a bit of loading on a couple of other shoots which has been fun, if a bit frantic.Double gunning. Tried my seven month old lab for the first time after christmas, just to get her used to gunfire.Turned out my training has paid off and i`m really pleased with her progress. Quite a few trees down though, wrecking a couple of pens so theres a bit of work to do in the off season with a new pen to build as well.
  7. Yeah, thats my opinion. My mrs, trying to be helpfull, said i`d chop the stumps to ground level with a bigger saw than they had. She thinks i should point them in the right direction, but i think if they were open to advice, then they would have come and asked.
  8. We had this. Our neighbours leylandi was only six foot from the side of the house, however, it made no impact on satelite signal when we had it installed.A couple of years down the line it started to effect it and i moved the dish further up the gable end which improved things for a while. The tree hadnt grown significantly during this period but reception was often poor.Especially if it was windy. I assumed it was the tree blowing about. I did mention to the old boy about the tree and he had it pruned. It didnt seem to make much difference. We upgraded our sky package, which needed a new dish and LNB.The reception changed just like that and the engineer said the tree wasnt effecting it, but said it might in a few years. The old LNB was in poor shape, accounting for the bad reception. Funnily enough, a few years later my mrs mentioned that the old boy next door was messing about the tree with a bowsaw.I stuck my head over for a chat, and he said he`d decided to have the tree out, but it was going to cost. I was round like a shot and had it all out.Didnt charge him either.
  9. Well, after a few years of being empty and the garden getting totally out of control, the house next door was sold. A few weeks later a group of blokes in their twenties with a chainsaw turn up and start hacking at the leylandis. They would come most evenings and by the pained sound their saw is making i would say the chain hasnt been sharpened in the couple of weeks they`ve been working. Some of the stumps look like they`ve been cut with a blowtorch. They`ve also been using the saw to cut out roots. One of them did introduce himself as our new neighbour and seem a decent enough chap.He mentioned pulling over the larger stumps by the front wall.I said that was liable to tip the wall over and it might be better to cut them as low as possible and either grind them out or put some chip over it and put some shrubs in. I just know whats going to happen.Theres a mini digger on the site at the moment.
  10. A fella i know told me he got rid of his stove cos it was costing 75 quid a week to run it.Logs from petrol stations and b&q.He was picking up those bags on the way home from work.
  11. I cant refuse old saws that i get given.I keep them to mess about with in the winter evenings for when my mrs is `on one` or watching crap on tv. The shed just doesnt get that appeal when its cold.A couple of old homelites, a skillsaw and various other junkers are still sat around taking up space.Might fix the 064 at some point as it will be usefull possibly.
  12. In a previous life i worked as an electrician for my Dad.We had a big winter contract at a holiday camp doing various things.Nothing big in each chalet but it was all of them. There were other trades there too. The security guard was a tosser. We had to lock all our materials and any left tools in a chalet which only he had the keys to.We were also only to use a toilet 200yds away as the water had been turned off everywhere else. He said he was responsible if anyone used the other toilets in the chalets . I was working in the lofts and my maglite went missing overnight. The security boy had the key to the lock up and said i should be more carefull with my stuff. Over the next few weeks i systematically went for a `pony` in every chalet that had been finished.Childish, but i was a teenager.
  13. On a landrover theme, the alternator went on my disco just before christmas one year.A new one was far more money than i thought reasonable and to get it for sensible money would have been mail order. Not likely to arrive in the christmas rush. Went to the scrapper on the offchance there would be a disco to raid. There was a couple. Both stripped out. As a fallback position i made a note of the output details on the knackered alternator.Checking other cars i could match them but they all had odd connections and different pulleys. I got one for a tenner.Swapped the pulleys and bodged together the connections with crimps. Its still on there five years later.
  14. I hate them and i havent been stung in years untill recently.I was cutting some ivy from a long dead fallen tree so i could ring it up and got stung on the forearm. I went and had a brew to see if anything would come of it, but it didnt, so i went to carry on, by which time there was about thirty wasps buzzing around the log. It wasnt that painfull but it took a long time to heal, and at one point it had a red ring around it which apparently is a sign of deep infection.Theres still a small scar there now. A mate got badly stung strimmering a paddock. He stood on a nest and they went up his trouser legs.Over thirty stings on his legs, the landowner turned a hose on him while he stripped off to get the wasps off him.

    kick back

    That made me cringe.
  16. Cant beat the advice from a propper bike shop. I`ve had scotts in the last few years, Scott scale 900 quid. Best bike i`ve had. Good groupset and hydroformed frame. Its had some hammer and quite a few offs but it just carries on.
  17. Hey no problem. I was getting mixed up with your posts and those of the op. ATB Andy.
  18. Heres a link to a thread. Not the one i was looking for which went into a lot more detail and more solutions, but it worked for me. http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/147319.htm Hope you work it out. Looking at your picks there is a buildup of dust top left of the seal join. Although there is none showing in the mating surfaces, the restriction here would draw dust straight through anyway. So it wouldnt remain. Wouldnt suprise me if this wasnt where your problem is.
  19. Mine used to look like that, but since i`ve used grease its not been a problem. The problem has been discussed at length on the arboristsite and the seal was identified as a possible cause. The threaded rod is too long or some other part stopping the plastic nut cinching the filter down and sealing it against the opposite face. It nonetheless feels tight, I tried grease and the problem stopped, so i can only think theres some truth in it.
  20. The filters fine, the problem is that when the plastic nut is tightened down the filter can still be loose. The nut tightens down on something other than the filter. Either grease the mating face of the filter or cut yourself a gasket out of thin compressed foam or rubber to take up any slack. I get very little dust behind my 046 filter ATB Andy.
  21. I think the secrets in maintaining a deep bed of hot ash.
  22. I just let the glowing ash build up through the evening by putting a bit of coal on as well as logs.Creates more ash than logs do. I only do this at the weekend, not if everyone is going to be out for the day. Then i chuck some coal on and close the vents off. TBH when i do this i dont find sooty glass in the morning, just a steady glow which picks up when i put a log on.
  23. Cheers, i`ll look into that. Went to my folks place today for a looksee. Theres a lot of trees overhanging the river of various varieties. Mostly willow but a number of mature oaks. Ones a leaner right across the water and it would be a shame for it to be cut down. Its further along though and the far bank. Looking at the oak in my parents garden, its going to take some thought and enginuity to remove the branch safely. The rivers very swolen and quite deep at the moment
  24. Yeah, the boundary thing makes sense. I would think its a courtesy to say whats happening though. Dont know who owns the river. Its tidal 1/2 mile further down. It might make more sense when my folks speak to the council Monday. Cheers for the input.
  25. Right, cheers guys, just needed to bounce it off people in the know. They havent been asked if its ok at all. Mum shouted over at them to see whats going on. My folks own everything that side of the river. Theres no seperate ownership of fishing rights or anything like that. The guy mum spoke to said they were just going ahead with the work without asking for any permission. They didnt think they needed to. Told my folks to check with the council for any TPO`s monday and generally check everything else out. I`d be very suprised if there is`nt a restriction. The thing that concerns my parents is if its all legit and the council have been convinced of a need for cutting back and given the go ahead for this Natural enterprise who are a `ltd` company, that any objections will result in the work being done regardless and them billed for it. Although, when enforcement type work is carried out the owners are warned in advance, so i dont think there is a worry on that score.
