  1. Theres a few knobbers like this about. You did right refusing it, although theres folk that will. They end up on youtube. A mates boss who owns a manor house offered me `a few logs`to take down a large beech.A job i`d assessed at being a couple of grands worth. Not all of them mind, he wanted the majority.Haha, eeerm, no. My mate was all for sticking a ladder in it and setting forth with his 020av.His boss is loaded, but quite happy to let an employee do dangerous work for nothing.I managed to talk him out of going up fortunately.
  2. I`ve bought a lot of gear from Gustarts and find them very helpfull.I use yale 13mm which is a very good value rope.

    Heights

If i feel insecure at height i dont like it.Checking my kit closely beforehand and relying on it 100% takes away apprehension.I always get a bit of butterfies before climbing, but when i`m underway i dont think a lot about it and concentrate on the job in hand. Moving about with ropes i find thrilling, but i really dont like ladders, and i dont like the look of mewps. I think a healthy fear of heights, not hysterical fear, concentrates the mind and removes complacency.
  4. Theres a big emphasis on risk assesment, and chainsaw maintenance in cs30.Stripping saws right down, dressing bars, knowing how to identify correct chains from the bar stamp, the packaging the chain came in,marks in the chain and correct size files and filing angles.Environmental stuff.Good luck its fun if you have a good group.

Cant ever remember replacing it.All of this is a bit of a worry as my workmate is ordering one tomorrow.I`ll be there as i`m collecting a pole pruner, i`ll have to ask a few questions.
  6. stihl 064av.Its in the dealers to have mains squeezed into the cases at the moment.Couldnt do that part myself, but i`ll put the rest back together.Sometimes borrow a mates 020av if i`m stuck for a working top handle.
  7. I keep all my stuff at home.Any gear left in a lockup in a yard will be vulnerable. My garage is next to the house, has just the one door and no windows which are weak points. If the dogs kick off in the night i always get up and check it out carrying a stave. The dogs can have a tear about and a good sniff. They arent capable of taking anybody on as they`re too soft, but they are on the alert 24/7. If i didnt have the dogs, a baby monitor set up in a garage should have enough range to alert you of theft. As far as stopping kit getting lifted on jobs, i`ve thought about getting some of that cammo paint that airsofters use.Spray everything up.It can be removed easy enough if you want to sell the saws. Most kit is bright colours orange, white, red, etc.Easy to spot for a scumbag nipping in when you have your eye off the ball.Cammoing might not stop all theft, but if its seconds and they dither because kit is not immediately obvious or not the expected colour, then that might make the difference.
  8. Wifes a nurse, and has been a top mum for our lad and stepmum for my daughter, who is now 23, but she was a toddler when we met.(my daughter, not my wife).Independantly good with her own money and resources, shes been a top bird, who i would struggle to be without.
  9. I did one of these last year.It was a large willow that had fallen in and then grown a fair bit putting out branches.I wore a pair of waders as it wasnt too deep, but it was the removal of the branches which took the longest.I took out a rope to tie branches to and a mate hauled them in. The trunk was cut up with my 046 with a big bar to keep the powerhead out the water. The sections were lifted out with a telelifter. Afterwards i stripped the saw right down and thoroughly cleaned and oiled everything. Even though i wore waders, there was so many underwater branches to get through, they were pierced so i got wet anyway.
  10. Probably just people replacing their machinery with newer, but retaining their harness to use with a new machine.Makes sense to me.
  11. Sounds odd. My disco seats seven, but its never been an issue for insurance.Shop around.Think i`m with Admiral at the moment.
  12. Up early to walk the dogs, then spraying some body panels for my old chaps morris traveller restoration.Chilling between coats in the garden, now a cheeky bottle of red.Way too hot for serious work.Up early tomorrow for the arrival of the ducks on the shoot. Not driving though.
  13. Friday and saturday nights are when pi**ed up people are on the bay bidding on things.Good time to finish your auction but not a good time to buy.
  14. These are used saws that the owners have probably been mugged for previously.I doubt they know any different. It doesnt make it right, and it should be reported though, but theres plenty of tosspots importing knockoffs from china that want hitting by trading standards. The first one though.100 quid postage?really?
  15. I had this on an 064 once when the main bearings were on their way out.Not all the time, but the coil would catch on the flywheel.Sometimes sheared the key. Most of the time it would run but every now and again the worn bearings would come out of alignment causing a kickback on starting.Have a look for scuffing on your flywheel.
  16. I can pick one of these up cheap. Its been stored in a gardeners lockup for a fair while.I had a look while pulling out some other gear.Looks complete, and my mate says its not needed and could be got rid of as its taking up space. Anyone got one/used one? Is it worthwhile or just a gimiky contraption.A look on youtube has a couple of advert type offerings, and on the face of it, it might be just the ticket come autumn for some jobs clearing leaves, twigs etc on large lawns. On the other hand it might sit in my garage unused as in its former life. Cheers in advance for your sage advice.
  17. I`ve got one of these, and it is doable if the mechanism is really clean. Not great though.Smaller bar is better.I wouldnt have the saw if it wasnt hardly used, cheap as chips.
  18. This looks quite effective: Longboy High Saws, UK - Silky Fox

    makita dcs230t

Cheers breezeblock.I`ve put a strop on the handle.By the looks of things it will be more secure than the original arangement. Thanks for the input.
  20. I do a fair bit of shooting.Pests mostly, but a bit of game sometimes.Quite a lot of foxing too. Shotguns: Browning 325 Sillhouette Franchi 610 Bretton Gaucher.410 Rifles: Howa .223 Ruger .22h.I have nv on this. Sako Finnfire .22lr CZ 452 .17HMR Theoben Eliminator Daystate Harrier Weirauch HW35 I help a mate out through the year with gamekeeping which normally involves carrying some firearm or other while working.

    New chain

I like stihl chain myself, and run semi chisel on my bigger bars.It will run longer without sharpening so often than full chisel.Saves a bit on downtime.

    makita dcs230t

Opinions please gents.Picked this up cheap as a non runner from a boy that used it for firewood.Thirty quid with good compression. Turned out it just needed a new carb rubber, which makita call an insulator. On the face of it, after a thorough strip and clean, it seems a great lightweight saw with very cheap spares. Cant see where i can fit a strap at the moment. No obvious attachment point but i`m sure i will figure something out. Cheers.

Surely if the clutch bearing is an issue, you would keep an eye on it and replace regularly?Am i missing something?I dont have one, but i`ve used one and it seems a good saw.I do like to keep hold of older kit and run an 026, which has never missed a beat in several years.I do look after my stuff though.
