  1. dont agree. there isnt much wrong with wearing fur (only on special crocket nights) - its biodegradeable, renewable and 'humane' if they live a good natural life and quick painless death, its no different to eating them. like that happens anywhere if mankind's doing the harvesting though, that is the injustice. once saw a video of dogs stacked in a pile blinking out of live skinned bodies. i could easily rip a head off someone i saw doing that, in fact just give me an address
  2. a dark sort of genius!!
  3. Another one here with them too - price good but insist on written RA +MS for every task - otherwise i am assuming you are on your own if it comes to a claim. Essentially i guess they save money by paying out less, and pass that saving on to you. Renewals up soon, not sure yet as a small outfit that should be able to do verbal RA's. You get what you pay for, like most things in life
  4. That's very impressive Duncan, and i hope that things really improve. I do worry about all this imported timber, mainly from an ecological perspective. Apologies for my slightly acerbic question and thanks for the reply. Good man! Cheers Mark
  5. i've got a question. how sustainable is the wood from these area, and do you care? Ditto what Andy said.
  6. like rover said, but i thought it was the caterpillar - one of the hawkmoths - first time I found one dad said it was going to be a B-52 when it grew up.
  7. man that's a tricky one! probably fattened itself up on something else, good shelter to pupate in? found a green and white caterpillar on some leylandi once
  8. bumper crop coming on my 6 year old tree now......so they are a bit small but does anyone else have trouble with them going rotten and dry early while still on the tree like they have in previous years. Course I want them to rot but when I am ready for them!!!! im in the southwest and the tree loses the sun behind the hedge late in the year......any advice welcome! cheers Mark
  9. that is an awesome idea.....gonna do that now!!!!
  10. With all this heat they are forecasting this week, howz it going to effect your approach to health and safety? At the risk of sounding like a perv I have told the guys to wear shorts at every opportunity when not chainsawing. Tops off looks too scruffy/eye-watering IMO
  11. yep ive had it too. short-sighted world-weary idiots.
  12. don't mind the derail one bit, and anyway thanks for all the input chapfths!
  13. yes I have a finance agreement on the chipper which is a little over 4%. good advice. I just don't want to have to scrap the vehicle as it has some value left in it. I think after the recent works I will get at least 6 months out of it before selling it on if I can.
  14. thanks guys lots of wise words in there. yes I am probably a bit late. I expect that what money I can save up over the next couple of years wont go that far towards a new truck anyway. Its probably worth chucking the new truck in (bodywork issues, but I should get a grand for it). I seems harmless to pay 10% say more for a vehicle over say 4 years - probably save 10% of hassle/downtime etc????? As long as I don't go silly with it....
  15. anyone got a magic formula for looking at this!?!?!?! its getting towards new vehicle time and would appreciate any advice. is it worth getting a last couple of years out of the old girl whilst saving up? (her body's not what it was) cheers mark
  16. being your own boss is going to be harder than you imagined - where work was arranged for you and all the admin/h&s was done, you'll have to do it...all the responsibility and all the pressure. It is likely that this is the beginning of the end of your current arrangement. so do us all a favour and charge a decent rate (prob double what you were paid before), even if you are living at home - save the money/live well, move out of home and move on up! best of luck
  17. was it long or fat? one of these? - Thick Legged Flower Beetle - What's That Bug? those rear legs are amazing!
  18. hmm septic tank might explain the nettles?! just a bit parched? was another early summer long dry spell?
  19. all in all I think I wont risk it, mower blew up last month so I am strimming the lawn at the mo...and no I was using the right oil!!!!! it was ancient. cheers all
  20. yep it says 10w (ISO32) - its a greenmech arb130 what do you reckon?
  21. thanks for the wisdom guys, glad I asked unlike usual where I just carry on and see what happens!
  22. in my ignorance I just hoped the viscosity might be the same and that would make it all ok!
  23. Evenin! Can anyone tell me if its ok to use 10w-30 oil in the chipper instead of the 10w is says in the manual?!?!? Got a can I bought by mistake. Cheers in advarncth Mark
  24. think you just about covered it mate! Coolest thing I think I have is dormice. Only found a nest in the brambles so cant be sure, just seems likely. Its a good habitat for them. Oh otters pass up the river. same re surrounding cultivation - must be an oasis some parts of the year. Lots of buzzards on the telegraph poles. Meadow flora could be better (its ok - pignut, bf trefoil, red and white clover) and hogweed is on the march - I need to get some grazing regime in place. Deadwood all over the place, although I haven't thought of burying any!?!?
  25. Vertigo, I would guess its a losing battle as this ring is so thin - I would take a few of the thickest rings you have and put them somewhere really dry and warm in full sun - this makes rapidly makes loads and loads of tiny cracks before the tension rips a big one or two - I call it the lily pad look. Once this had happened, move it somewhere cool and windless for a year to dry out slowly. Then cut the ends off, hopefully removing the small (and shallow) splits. Sand quickly down to 180 I would say and then wax well. It can be done but I reckon you would need several rings to increase your odds. If in the end the piece still has shakes/splits in it then fill them with liberon filling wax - comes as a phat sort of stick
