  2. :trytofly:tree work-schweework man what are the butterflies?!?! Please say its white admirals i bludy loves them
  3. Bump!
  4. ive only made a few but do it green - much easier. the thin wood dries out quickly. dont include the pith and it shouldnt split unless you stick it on a radiator! anything except euc elm -tricky grains or strongly flavoured like oak. close grain best - oak ash hard to clean due to pores. sycamore and fruit woods are good, beech....
  5. Sam?!?!?! Never!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Many thanks Paul, at least that is something to work back from the future with!
  9. Just checking interest at this stage.... End of next week, or soon after i have a few tonnes of sycamore (mostly), some oak and ash going from a line of trees we are taking out. I can tell you where they are if you wanna check them out first. They are on streetview but look half the size they are. Nothing over 25" down to 4" branches, pretty straight. Dont ask me how much - bit less than a lorry, but several 3.5 tonner truck loads. If you are only interested in certain size stuff then say. Some of it is roadside but the row extends away from the road. Open to offers on it, or better, the person offering the most labour saving for us (own grit / Hiab / crane / winch) can have it. Can cut to a preferred length to a point - its going to have been partly dismantled and without above mechanical aids we will pulley & skid it out (we probably will have to do some anway) PM if interested, Mark
  10. Hi all, Can anyone point me in the right direction to some recommendations or legisation to follow once we have CAT scanned some public sites? Cheeers Mark
  11. Paul - a word of caution if I may. Just about the best thing for woodlands is for humans to stay out of them. The only thing that needs managing is your impact on the woodland. Woodlands are often island habitats and your decisions can cause big changes to the wildlif within. If you think that lichens are disease then you need to do a lot of reading before you start to 'manage' the woodland. There is no such word as tidy in ecological terms. he overgrown areas have their own importance. Even the spindly specimens will sort themselves out over time, maybe bend over, crack, make bat roosts..etc etc, but letting a bit of light in can be good for varying the habitat, akin to trees dying or falling over naturally making brief light opportunity for some species. So given your need from the woodland, and it sounds like you want to give back which is great, I would thin out some of those and take the odd larger oak out as and when to create glades and stack the brushwood as you have. You could ring-bark a few trees to create standing deadwood good luck with it, if you want some proper advice though dont ask a bunch of chainsaw happy rednecks like us lot!!!!! I'd tread softly if it were mine.
  12. Hi all, I'm looking for qualified climbers and groundstaff contacts in, or within striking distance of North Devon - Barnstaple/Ilfracombe mainly. We are friendly, PL & EL'd, pay well, and pay more for experienced efficient workers, on day rate as part of our team. H&S, quality of work, energy and a rapport with clients and co-workers important. I have a couple of days for someone with own climbing kit capable of reasonably-paced reduction work straight away. You need own PPE and preferably climbing gear & spikes if a climber. LOLER your responsibility. All else can be supplied. If you are interested (or know anyone who might be), PM me with a bit about your location, situation, experience & qualifications. Mark
  13. spike what happened to vitae lampada!?!?!?!? regiment blinded with dust and smoke and all that.....i mean i was expecting some ravishing poetry, or some gravitas-laden prose. it'll definitely do though. looks good mate
  14. i wanted email, camera, mp3 and top battery life so i went for the nokia lunia 600 - excellent for the price and if your not worried about apps that is handy cos its a windows phone and the apps are panties. i rate it. some apps are handy though and even basic apps are better from the other os systems types - apple, android etc
  15. Got the standard sprocket one - running beautifully on the ms341 Rob. Keeping its paint well too which is nice! Might be the smoooothness of my method though ha!
  16. Dropped the gomtaro somewhere the other day and am left with the scabbard and a spare blade! So all i need is the handle - any one found a place to get them? I expect they are the most expensive part but hey.... cheers mark
  17. Many thanks graham! I'll have a look in daylight tomorrow - it rings a bell or two and I bet the letters will fit......
  18. here's mine - actually i dont know the make - maybe someone can tell me. its a bit heftier than it appears in my meaty paws! its in embarrasingly poor fettle though, bit of oil and a buff required
  19. staffordshire - cant remember the make. use the straight edge for sharpening crooks, or rough work. versatile and sensible blade thickness. dont rate the morris ones - like using a table knife, wanted to like them as they are pretty local
  20. Thanks guys. Its an unusual situation. There are factors... I want to zip the sections down onto a council verge (def need to ask about that!) and the client will be peeved if i stir things up for them. Great talking it through, and yes I know we are in consultant territory but it was quite clear the clients didnt want to complicate their plans. You cant blame them for seeing themselves in the clear. I now have a plan that follows the general concensus. It going to be a really fun rig down ....if it comes to it
  21. thanks all - some grand contributions - dont lose any sleep over it - i wont!!!!!!!!!!!! cheers M
  22. it might be just as simple as you say. i think the planners have missed a beat really as they have not put conditions in for its retention. the applicant never asked and they never said no its has to stay. 2005 was a different world then, but i cant believe they didnt flag it in 2010. i think the new owners should put that call in, rather than ask me to put my neck on the line - the plans submitted show a tree retained, that is the problem - im no 5837 expert but it cant stay!!!!!!
  23. well the trouble is i probably know more than i ought to as i looked at the application online. i guess i could act ignorant, but there is a client loyalty issue. but i guess any errors/inconsistencies in their planning permission should be left for them to resolve and its not for me to walk the tightrope.
  24. many thanks armybloke. that is a great help. The application must have been deemed valid though for it to have been approved wouldnt it though? Is the permission to build then possibly invalid as well? thanks mark
  25. hmmm i think thats giving the council too much info...plus its full removal of a prominant tree...i get on well with the TO but im not sure about asking him, or anyone in planning such a broad, but loaded question.
