  1. great thread guys - I found a petit ménage of two slow worms and a grass snake under a bit of tin edging my woodchip pile last year. Infact that might be why I got Tom to do the shovelling to fill bags for mulching! (hey, btw I didn't put that accent there - it just appeared - ok which of the mods is a French grammar stickler!?!?!) Always good to hear wildlife stories - there ought to be a dedicated thread really Jesse I have a similar sounding bit of land over here - try and keep a full range of successional habitats going
  2. some good advice here. I put the cut in as usual when laying with the chainsaw, and don't bugger about with the hook, support the stem with one arm and put a felling lever in the kerf of the chainsaw cut. lever the lever up and down with the other hand to open the split downwards. this can be used on pretty big stuff, especially if you have managed to remove some of the crown weight with a polesaw or by climbing. 2 people make the whole thing easier. Then again if its willow and wet, you can just coppice and sink the felled stems into the mud to root n shoot
  3. come on peeps - 86 nibbles and not a single bite!
  4. Eevnin! As above - we have a tip site sorted - just need someone to ground & chip for us and to get probably two tip loads away from Tiverton. Easy day for someone. PM here or text me details & rates - 07810 798782 Cheers Mark
  5. ....know that feeling. whereabouts are you? I need a guy, with a decent sized tipper this saturday in devon.....
  6. anyone done this? and has anyone managed to get theirs insured without needing to be kept in a locked compound or building? cheers mark
  7. I would - sounds like it may have been planted too deep (trop profond?) ha cant remember le spelling. - get some big stakes and straps on it - 4 would be ideal but allow just un petit peu de movement - crown thin/reduce too. apples are good transplanters bon chance old bean
  8. could somebody confirm what these are - I don't think these are hispidus and perenniporea in the photos which means they probably are! tried to show the brittle fracture on this basal ash limb that failed. Hispidus would be black now wouldn't it? apologies for the qualities of the photos - the tree hangs over a ravine and I was stretching with the phone. going back to cut the limb up, strip the ivy off and get the mallet out tomorrow. hope the pics appear below Murky buckets in advance Mark
  9. This isn't who want to be a millionaire Jon, I just want to get rid of some wood chip!!!!!!! Thanks for going to the trouble. Graham I'll text you a little later on, nice one thanks...... More sites the merrier - there is about 5 transit loads in all - we will have to bring home what we cant give away.
  10. Evening treelurvers, Can anyone help out or suggest a place here - and yep i'm afraid it's conny - leylandii. Working a bit out of our normal range, hence the request. Cheers in advance Mark
  11. ditto the above - the only timber that should be removed from the wood is living stuff - there is no way of guessing the amount of deadwood to any degree of certainty- if its in a wild state there should be loads of deadwood - great. If it has to be tidied so it can look like a greeting card then at least stack the deadwood on site, eh!?!
  12. thanks m8y. the 150 is the one they are bringing unfortunately there isn't a 130 demo for some reason, perhaps for the reasons Pete mentioned above!!! I expect I can only afford the 130 I'm looking for a machine that will see out my tree surgery years....
  13. Thanks Pete, Liam from MST Tiverton is coming up next week for a demo. Reminds me - must get some sleepers / old oak beams in..... Got a good variety of brush to try out. so i'm well on the path to the green side......good to hear you're candidly airing the teething problems and getting them fixed. What's the experience from the fields people? Cheers Mark
  14. How is it going with the new greenmechs people? I am looking at the 130. Did the diesel version of the 130 get manufactured anyone know? Cheers Mark
  15. You'll need to leave it to rot for years to become as interesting as the one in this thread...4 or 5 years my guess otherwise its just p.l.a.i.n!
