  1. never had an issue really but i dont use kern... i probably do more damage to my ropes with foot ascender skuffs etc
  2. I would go fimbl.... because i think they are steel. so if you drop it on concrete by accident its less drama
  3. let us know how you get on John and Rich!! Whats the price tag?
  4. nah. just ascended on my rope wrench and let the uni self tend.
  5. did this on a wide low beech reduction with 13 phone lines running through it last week.. winner
  6. Treestuff said they would be stocking them in january rich.. treekit have one you can try out as does ian flatters Ians is nice and smooth as its been broken in well
  7. Give them a call dude
  8. pop the spliced end through a sling.. throw your rope bundle as far as you can over a branch, clip the spliced end into the sling with a biner and pull her up.. voila the sling girths on the branch and the biner isnt side loaded. I dont bother though. I think i can tie a running bowline quicker
  9. Yeah for sure.. It would have taken me at least 30 seconds to make that changeover in a panic striken state... Probably would have got a lot more stings. However the beauty of the ground based rescue for exploration type climbing is they could be lowering me down while I was changing over if I had been on ascenders:thumbup: Not so useful in a work environment.
  10. Ive been attacked by bees in the tropics before on the way up.. However, I was already on my way down by the time the guys has started lowering me...
  11. Hi Mark. yeah it works really well but in the event of the rope wrench not being engaged the zz is taking your full weight instead of half the weight, like it is designed for. SO... with all the cracks that keep appearing on zz's it wouldnt be my first choice of climbing system... unless you have a really good tether and also check every single time that the wrench is FULLY engaged. But petzl say no either way lol
  12. The simple answer is no. But those are the cuts where i deem it extremely unlikely for me to cut myself.. So really its kind of irrelevant.
  13. The only time I use a ground based rescue system is for newbie climbers or for myself on first ascents into tropical trees, there could be bees snakes etc etc up there.
  14. Treekit are selling a variety of options, However the stitched one made of Kernmaster by terry banyard looks to be the best they offer!
  15. If you use a hitch cord, it can be disconnected and clipped to a rescuers harness.. Best of both worlds....
  16. Rig good. ID bad. Panic feature gets a bit funky and engages all the time due to the friction over the branch/es
  17. Of course Im right lol
  18. I would strongly recommend a figure of 8 with ears in this application.. As we all know base anchors end up going slack at some point during the climb. In which case the figure of 8 can end up with a girth hitch.. either that or just pop a bight through a normal figure of 8 and clip the bight into the biner... safety first kids.. theres no point in having a lowerable system that gets stuck
  19. Hi Bewarethemoon youve got your tether the wrong way on the wrench mate. The rubber gromet should be under the wrench on the other side of the attachment point. I find shortening my hitch cord length helps it bite down better
  20. ordered from them a few times. you pay a bit in shipping but no extra import tax for me..
  21. Lol cheers guys. Only thing to be aware of is milking too much slack down towards your spliced eye assuming you have one.. I climb the first month or so on one direction only with the rope until all the slack is milked off. Then climb either direction
  22. tape dropping said large ficus
  23. Little update with a few photos of the second season of canopy research in Lambusango forest, Buton, Indonesia. My highlight of the trip was climbing a 50m leaning strangler fig and getting three wooly necked stalks circling out tree for about 5 minutes!
  24. I cant speak for the guys, but I can tell you from personal experience climbing in the tropics that you dont want to get a cambium saver stuck 80 metres up. Also its not like tree work where you are smashing out the whole tree off one anchor. A slow descent isnt going to do to much harm when the whole tree is covered in creeper protecting the cambium usually. but yeah not ideal
