In my opinion 550 is one of the best you can get, if you have the chance to purchase it ( possibly by selling your other 1? ) 1600 and 550 is one of the best combinations you can have . -

How about making life easier and getting a front mount schliesing 400u or 550u, fit direct to din plate and c/w drive to match mog pto, good chippers to -
I found out the other day that when using chipper at jack knife angle to truck that without corner cut away you can not direct chip into back of vehicle !

Looked good at APF the other day, solid , I think the one at the show was sold so there may be some one to ask, there was one thing I thought was a bit? But can’t remember what it was now, if it springs to mind I’ll let you know. Good luck with decision! Cheers J

Went along and had a look in at both of this years carving events, Sandringham good but with not enough cash audience to make the auction at the end a good result for all the final pieces, some good works of art struggling to get starting bids of 100 /200 ! shame , 1 or 2 sold well. Westonbirt hopefully will be a cracking day today ( Monday) some fantastic works having finishing details put to them and with the auction at the end of the day. and of course the arboretum, not enough hours in one day to see it all. Ps good presentation by Arbs at the show in the arena, not easy to be good at this type of work and be able to stand in front of a crown and give an interesting and understandable presentation of how, why, and the machinery used in the trade, interesting to see that ‘ friends of westornbirt’ have funded quite a few items of machinery used on site.

It is quite likely you can get funding or part funding for most of the practical aspects of Arb and Forestry related training, there was a lump of eec monies as well as around last year and hopefully still is , please note you must get agreement for this before signing up for any course , I hope people nearer you can suggest local / recommended training facility, ask them re funding and help , most of them know best who can help support you with this , you will be entering, in my opinion, one of the best and potentially most rewarding trades/ professions there is , from Army to continental shifts to ? it may be possible and mutually beneficial for an Arb co. to take you on locally I wish you well with your journey

Er e um er depends on how we get product to chipper and into transport to get off site and how fast we can turn round the transport back to site 1 to 2 weeks 3 man gang ish ( then there the induction 1 day, nesting pigeons 2 days , revolting neighbours 2 days ......you know the score) it was refreshing on site, I left it was dry time I got there pouring down , hi vis vest not water resistant -

Sell it I’d nearly give it away!! Even had the conversation with the site manager about cutting the ends of off the scaffold poles to make an access, he said hopefully it would not be still underwater when we get there to do the job!! looked at it this spring, empty site, fell trees, through hiezohack. chip chipperty chip into truck off site ££ go home ..... go back today timber framed houses up scaffold every where builders everywhere . silly builders A did you try the merc thingy with alex yet ( thanks Peter for your message ) -
I have a site in Swindon requiring removal of a mature leylandii hedge from a building site , access is a nightmare with site restrictions , possibly tracked chipper loading into skip loader dumper into pick up truck and off site, there is no space for skip, limited access, lots of produce to come off site , all the requirements for a building site cscs hse tickets etc. are needed . it depends on where you are hoping to work as to the relevance of the certificates , ie within our trade or in the building trade, also be careful there is a difference between forestry tractor and the others you can not build forestry machinery tickets on to an ag spec initial tractor, silly but the only difference we could find was something to do with the battery!! apply for and get funding before you register for the course , you cant get help retrospectively ,

We once had a colleague working with us who used stilts as part of something else he did and did top & the higher part of the sides for us one a conifer hedge worked a treat !!

I agree with mog but remember vosa don’t like tractors carrying load , but sure, mog as power base for transport, chip, grind, lift, carry . where else can you get a 50 mph 100 – 300 hp go any where chipper, poss gross of 24 tonnes, as ag spec on road, ? small enough for domestic works but big enough for most commercial situations. Be careful with purchase though buy the best you can get from the best

The main problem to address is moving arisings, produce, waste call it what you will from site, I suggest that almost all arb trucks with extended sides/ greedy boards are running over the weight capacity of the vehicle, although extended sides make a tidier set up, hides the contents out of sight ( gives you somewhere to pee!) we had a pick up with tool box and tipping back and changed to crew cab with tipping back, I think I prefer the tool box separate to cabin although there is a security benefit in having some of the gear in the cab. I think to start with a tipping pick up with 4x4 & trailer gives the best options, possibly with the 4x4 as your out of work transport. On from there tractor trailer ( mog love or hate em ) to shift volume weight from site.

Interesting reply, what if any is the % of people failing assessments, or is there a need for a higher level of competence , and how do you manage this , I am not a fan of our certs but hse reading of accidents and history in arb is not showing an acceptable level especially when compared with other industry, how do we improve it ? it would be interesting if we could give anonymous replies at times to discussions ! ?

Best years of rallying , possibly ! I was fortunate enough to have been spectating and marshalling during grp 4 and B still can catch some of this if you are lucky at, goodwood festival , ‘ race retro’ in march 2011 or ‘slowly sideways’ put them into search and hopefully get to see some action!!

Big Bolt thank you , top job on the hides nice project to have been involved in. for any one else looking for bat willow info I so far have found as well as J S Wrights who seem to be the more well known, Kippax willows in Leeds , Gray – Nicolls in Roberts bridge Sussex there is some info on their web sites as to how and what they use for the bat clefts quite interesting, possibly the most profitable, short term crop in forestry in the world!
