The price cw charge for their product tells you all you need to know. Even with subsidy they are way above market rate. I cannot see how, as a standalone business, it can ever work. As a component of a farm business it may just manage to wipe its face. All interesting stuff. I tried putting prices in the ads a while back but found that calls dropped off. A customer told me that if price was in ad they would only call if i was cheaper than others that they had called so i was missing the chance to really sell the product over the phone. As sam implies above the ad gets people to call but it is the conversation that sells. Price in the ad or on website also allows competition to price slighty under you from the off. I want to keep other suppliers on the back foot by not giving them that info to easily. Box ad v line ad....... If you get 10 enquiries for firewood on average how many do you win and how many do you loose? Assume these are new customers not repeat business. What % of quotes do you think you should be losing to ensure that you are pricing to the maximum that your market will bear? Currently, i am operating at about 80% capacity every day. Given that the timber is not yet stacked it will be very easy to screw yourself on the price. (been there, got the t-shirt). If i were you i would insist on a timber truck with scales or you put it over a weighbridge to get a definitive weight and pay accordingly. for proper world domination of the firewood market you need one of these: Cord King CS27-40 (Model 60) Cord King also look at their bog standard log splitter : Cord King Monster Splitter Cord King. does the palax come with a chip handling system? If your installation is fixed which it probably will be with a log deck, get something to suck up all the sawdust straight from the blade and into a bag. it gets very tedious shovelling it up manually.

Also dont forget to keep up your salt intake. I had flu last year. Ate nothing and only drank water for 5 days. Then forced my self to eat some salt and vinegar chrisps. All true but sort of assumes that air surrounding the log pile is still. If the pile is in the wind it will continue drying even in winter assuming the pile has roof to keep rain off. http://www.kinnoirwoodfuel.co.uk

If your working solo a log deck and loader is essential imo. I have the hakki woodran 422 gravity fed with hyd. Paddles. Cost about £2.5k new. I can just about get 2.5m3 worth of softwood on the deck at once enough for a load. The bigger the deck the better. If i was needing one now i would build one. 5mile radius! 10 mile radius! If only!!! I do not charge per se for delivery but like others charge it within the load price. If the customer will pay what i ask then i will go anywhere. In the highlands with its low population density distance means nothing its the money that counts. Also bear in mind there is no traffic up here so 40 miles is under an hour away. Its not like traversing manchester or london While most customers are within 30 miles i have many that are up to 50 miles away. I do these on slack days when not under pressure. They all make a contribution to profit. I dont thinkthey will ever be a threat to the small independent producer for two reasons: 1. transport costs are currently very high so they are at a disadvantage against local operators from the off. 2. Economies of scale in firewood are not easy to find. With only a £30k investment in kit i could produce up to 5000m3 of firewood per year ON MY OWN. Now look at CW. How many employees to produce what volume per year? At what investment cost? I will bet that per unit of labour my business is more productive albeit smaller. For that reason alone i have nothing to fear from the likes of CW. Regarding customers only burning hetas approved fuels, old wood burning hands will ignore such rubbish and new burners will ignore such advice when they find i have delivered to their neighbour for half the price they paid to cw. http://www.kinnoirwoodfuel.co.uk

Imho the website looks like wodburning snake oil. Their own cost comparison chart shows that "par char" (what ever that is) is only 0.4 p cheaper per kw than wood @ 30% mc. That tells me that my wood at 15% mc is cheaper per kw than their product. Not enough info or pics to comment on stove itself but the whole thing seems to me like a triumph of presentation over content. My wife got one in maiden name last week. Usual guff about several €m held in customs in diplomatic bag(contradiction in terms straight away). The unusual thing about the letter was that it originated from spain i.e. From inside the eu.
