  3. where is all the pellet going? is it power generation or large scale heating? I know a stove retailer near me and he says he hasn't sold a pellet system in ages....to expensive compared to an ordinary log burner in capital cost and ongoing fuel costs. so i suspect that it is not domestic demand
  4. I have been told that price pressure from the invergordon plant has indirectly caused the closure (next october) of the kinnoir sawmill not 2 miles from me. by way of illustration that money talks.... a small privately owned wood had 2600t extracted less than a mile away from Kinnoir mill. where did the wood go? to invergordon approx 90 miles away. so even with all that haulage it was still more worthwhile to ship it there. crazy. what i want to know is why balcas get a subsidy to run wood for miles and miles, burn it to turn it into electricity then sell the electricity to power domestic heaters when i can cut out most of the inbetween stages by selling firewood directly into the customers grate! worst of all they are charging me for the priviledge via my electricity bill. Governments north and south of the border pay lip service to small business but the reality is that they love getting into bed with big corporate enterprises. I may be wrong but i think the invergordon plant is part owned by the local council. I have yet to notice any affect on hardwood prices locally but softwood prices are definitely trending upwards.
  5. as above, worth £20 to £30 as is maybe £100 to £150 if split
  6. no. there was no time. he had to keep moving, hellhounds on his tail.
  7. that is all true but only a chartered or certified accountant can prepare ltd company or plc accounts for filing at companies house (a statutory annual requirement). this doesn't apply to partnership or sole trader accounts as there is no requirement to file these accounts as they are not for public record purposes (just between you and the taxman). all accountants, qualified or not, have to be registered with HMRC if they are preparing VAT accounts for clients so you can also check to see that they are registered. Checking with ICAEW and ACA the two main trade bodies is also a very good start as is personal recommendation from a trusted friend or acquaintance.
  8. i think it is down to cutting sytem and max dimeter capacity. I have the hakki. although it lacks the circular saw it more than makes up for it with the bigger cutting capacity and better value price. the circular saw will produce less chip (waste?) and probably less maintenance than a bar and chain. but the bar and chain give you a longer cut. being able to run larger diameters thru a processor is not to be dismissed lightly, as steve says above.
  9. and whatever you get, keep them out of direct sunlight
  10. graham

  11. To get rid of nuisance sales calls use the telephone preference service. Costs nothing and should work. It's illegal to make 'cold' sales calls to a 'phone number signed up to this service. If someone calls you to sell something, just ask, "have you checked my number with the telephone preference service? Well, please delete this number from your data base." They usually ring off like it's a hot potato. Sorry, it's UK only -- I'm not sure whether there are equivalents in other countries. Best wishes, John Russell my landline no. is signed up to the preference service but the sales calls still keep coming. I now insist on a £75 "adminstration fee" before i will talk to them about anything. they hang up pretty quickly.
  12. on friday 27th of may i will be travelling up from Surrey to Aberdeenshire with my transit tipper. if anyone needs stuff bringing from south to north (and all points in between) let me know as i need to offset some of the diesel costs. Can carry 1.3 ton max so no tractors if heavy, items will need to be forked on / forked off (or tipped off).
  13. Mobile Sawmill Trekkasaw forestry timber framing | eBay UK bargain?
  14. anyone have any pics? normally plenty of horntails (woodwasps) up here but not seen any so far this year. often come across their grubs when splitting softwood.
  15. where on the Marsh was that? Near Ruckinge?
  16. in the far north cordwood (sw & hw) is quite a bit cheaper to buy in than in the South, BUT, it has to be as there are fewer customers per square mile and delivery distances are much greater. There is obviously less supplyside pressure as well up here.
  17. call rob at kingstone 07771524178. good quality and the best price i have so far found
  18. anyone use one or seen one working? are they any good?
  19. thanks old hand . will keep your number to hand. I got an xpa 850 this morning from the local agri spares dealer. will give that a go and see how i get on.
  20. I think the trick is to keep them properly tightened. but it is a bit of a faff. went thru a stage where i was going thru sets of 3 drive belts every week.tightened em all up and now doing ok. the original saw belt did last reasonably well. replacements since have been crap. I'm sure this is down to using the wrong belt or a worn pulley on the saw head
  21. looks like the correct belt is a XPA 850 cogged belt. anyone know anymore?
  22. anyone know the correct size /spec for the toothed belt that drives the saw? have tried a gates auto belt but find they stretch and snap very rapidly. currently using gates belt 646mc avx13 x 850la. is this the correct size?
  23. anyone know the correct size /spec for the toothed belt that drives the saw? have tried a gates auto belt but find they stretch and snap very rapidly.
  24. did you get as far as finding out how much they charge in commission? their site indicates they employ 50 people so you can bet their fees are hefty. you should set up your own commission based marketing site for alaskan users
