  1. Time and time again:lol: Are you located down on the marsh? I used to live in Newchurch. Used to drink occaisionally in the Red Lion at Snargate, the Blue Anchor in Ruckinge and the County Members at Port Lympne....happy days.
  2. gravity fed is fine but you will need hydraulic operated paddle to control the roll of logs off the deck and onto the infeed conveyor. you need one small ram to operate that presumably you could feed it of the tractor hydraulics. Let me know if you want some pics of the paddle design and ram arrangement. For bigger and twisty timber two hydraulic rollers would also be nearly essential.
  3. 80% of what i sell is softwood (Grampian area). If you quote customers prices for both the price difference will generate lots of sales of softwood.
  4. THe only way to go IMHO is to sell by the loose loaded m3. I'm currently cracking out 10 to 15m3 per day on my jack. I therefore do not have the time or inclination to stack the logs in the back of the truck. Nor do i have time to count them in. as regards to weighing them.....this requires a trip to the weighbridge (at a cost) or installation of on board scales.... more expense and more overhead. most customers would not know what a ton or a m3 of logs look like anyway. They can visualise a transit tipper load. The body on the transit happily doubles up as the measuring device, holding 2.5m3. I invite the customer to measure the body to satisfy themselves as to quantity if they so wish. none ever take up the offer and I've yet to receive a complaint about short loading. with regards to VJ's point about regulation, he is correct as all governments attempt to control and thereby trash any industry that is doing well for itself but has no political clout with which to defend itself. if you are selling wood by m3 (loose or stacked) weights and measures can insist that your delivery vehicle body is officially calibrated with full and intermediate volumes (a measuring stick stuck and sealed to inside of the body.) If you sell it by the load there is naff all they can say about it. therefore, currently, I sell by the load but give the customer an "approximate" m3 figure. my 2p worth.
  5. UPDATE changed the oil today and ckecked inlet pipe. pipe sound. fired her up and still juddering for around 5 minutes, pump screeching. then screeching stopped and no movement with any service. thought pump was kaput. decided to unscrew flow from 3rd service to ram and dabbed pedal. oil sent shooting out after some bubbles escaped. reconnected pipe. still juddery bet getting better the more i used it. I am now convinced the problem is ice crystals in the filter (was very cold this morning , -19 C) will attempt to remove and replace filter when new one turns up tomorrow. I suspect it is still the original 1981 filter that came with the machine when new so its only done around 10,000 hours:lol:
  6. It has been cold up here in aberdeenshhire. early saturday morning temp gauge in car was showing -27 c. not sure how accurate gauge is mind. it did feel that cold.
  7. is that 50 miles with the additional charging socket installed or without?
  8. so if i plug the trailer into the caravan socket will it then charge say overnight (with ignition on towing vehicle off)? I cannot believe that you need a separate charging socket to charge the battery!! that was never mentioned when i bought it. VERY POOR IMHO. verging on not fit for purpose! Stevie, who fitted your 2nd socket? how much did it cost?
  9. oil does look a wee bit cloudy so may be condensation (water in oil). so i will change the oil, change the filter and check the pipe. If it is the pump then the machine is off to the great scrapyard in the sky
  10. vehicle electrics ok. had this problem towing with two different vehicles. caravan socket? I have twin electrics on the towbar but assumed that it should charge just on the normal socket. is thi not the case?
  11. Ihave a bobcat 611 that has an intermittent hydraulic problem. one minute all three services (up/down, crowd and 3rd service) all work fine. the next minute all three services are very juddery, pump starts to screech and then all three services begin to fail. problem seems to occur after 15 to 30 minutes of work if i then leave the machine overnight everything back to normal for 30 minutes or so then problem again. am using jcb universal oil (10w 30). oil is filled to correct level. does anyone one have any suggestions.
  12. As title anyone else had this? how do i cure the problem? where should i look? I have already replaced the ground and positive leads. battery is only a year old.
  13. I use the 421. working on your jack, a log deck is essential IMO. the 421 will just about hold enough lengths to make 2.5m3 of split wood i.e. a good transit load. as steve has said they are grossly overpriced for what they are. with hindsight I would make one myself (or get someone to fabricate it for me). i think the most important thing is to make it big enough to take enough lengths, in one hit, to make around 10M3 of split wood. this avoids the stop start of load-split-load-split. if the deck is gravity fed the max capacity is probably about 5m3, with a chain type feed the capacity could be higher
  14. IT IS A SCAM!!!!!! had the same thing recently when trying to sell a 4x4. Its is a ruse to get personal details and/or the kit from you without paying you a bean.
  15. does anyone own a "Country Kiln" stove? WOOD BURNING STOVES COUNTRY KILN INGLEWOOD MULTI FUEL STOVES AND WOOD BURNING STOVES If so, are they any good?
  16. Jim what do you run on the rear of your transit in this weather? I'm toying with the idea of putting some snow tyres on the back of mine but not convinced they will make that much difference. nearly got stuck up a 3 mile farm track yesterday. 1 hour with shovel got me out...just.
  17. I too went to an evening with Ray Mears. He has a real passion for his subject. His approach goes beyond the basics of lighting fires and making shelters. It also takes in the history and people behind the subject I would rank him alongside Les Hiddins the Bush Tucker Man ( Les Hiddins - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ), and Lofty Wiseman. Bear Grylls is showbusiness not survival.
  18. Kirkeness .......that's near Aberdeen isn't it?
  19. maybe stating the obvious but you can lift the container if and when you move:thumbup:
  20. Filing by hand is a knack acquired with practice. if you cant seem to get it right by hand get a clamp on file guide and use this for a week or so. it will teach your hands where to go. Also less is more..do not take of too much at each filing.
  21. but you will have problem with mould if storing green logs as these bags are not vented. if using secondhand bags, make slits in the sides first with a stanley knife. not a perfect solution and your milage will vary. alternatively pay the extra and get the real thing: BULK VENTED LOG BAGS (MOSQUITO NET 2-SIDES) on eBay (end time 26-Nov-10 12:37:10 GMT) there may be a discount for quantity
  22. I agree that these types of protest very seldom achieve their stated aims BUT what they do very well is send signals to those in authority / government about the advisability of persuing a certain policy vis their re - election prospects. Since Wat Tyler onwards such protests or revolts serve to illustrate to monarchs, protectors and politicians that they can only properly govern with our consent and not without it, wether elected or not.
  23. forgot to mention the little einhell log saw uses a 400mm blade (obtainable on ebay for @ £20) not sure about size and cost of blades for the two bigger saws.
