  1. great looking bags but do you not find that the wood sweats in the plastic? or is it already too dry for that to be an issue?
  2. just need this rain to stop!
  3. it looks like being below 9 degrees from here on in:thumbup: see here: Buckie weather forecast - Met Office
  4. assuming that is hardwood, what would the total cost be if delivering 15 miles from base?
  5. If it was felled two years ago and stacked the 6" stuff may be ready sell straight away once split. as for the bigger diameter wetter stuff if you split it now and store in vented bags on pallets in a very draughty barn you may be lucky and have some saleable product in 3 months. the key things are not to store it in big heaps (use the bags) and ensure airflow across the split wood to draw out moisture. all depends on how wet it is to begin with. Alternatively, split it all now and season til next winter and sell it then. as to price....i have no idea in your neck of the woods especially as most people south of Edinburgh seem to be obsessed with only burning hardwoods so softwood is not a premium product. however for you to market it successfully without dropping price to far you should consider mixing it in with some hardwood and selling as "mixed" loads. slightly cheaper than pure hardwood but more expensive than pure softwood. hope this helps
  6. Kinnoir....just north of Huntly hi Wee Jim how is business going? competition is savage round here at the moment with up to 9 competitors advertising in the local rag but most of them will not go more than 5 miles from the town so still a lot of business to play for
  7. how did you make the gas bottle safe before slicing it open? will filing it with water do the job?
  8. angus whereabouts are you? Brechin area?
  9. I came to that conclusion as well. since my original post I've had a couple more similar calls (from different areas) They both cited £30 ton as the going rate. When i questioned further i discovered they were talking about sawmill offcuts that you have to collect yourself. These offcuts are very green and burn in a haze of steam. So no competition really.
  10. Steve FYI...... I have not experienced any of the above problems. I use Firefox 3.6.3 running on Ubuntu Linux 10.04 (don't know if that makes a difference)
  11. no......toothpicks:thumbup:
  12. have you tacked the wire to the pallet? I made a few of these but wrapped the wire around the edge of the pallet then stapled it to secure. excellent for drying green wood but a pain in the a**e to tip out into the truck. ok if you have rotating pallet forks though. have now settled on the vented bags as they are easier to tip out.
  13. Anything dry is better than anything wet!
  14. For members in Aberdeenshire........ Just had a guy on the phone from Ellon wanting a load of softwood. I quoted £100 for 2.5m3. (a good 2.5m3) He told me he could get that for amount for £55 delivered from someone more local. Anyone know if someone is delivering at that sort of price? or is it nonsense.
  15. does anyone know what the smallest setting is? what is the smallest diameter sticks can you get out of it?
  16. fantastic vid! over how many days and how many frames per hour?
  17. I do exactly the same with the filled bag sitting on a pallet. when ready to load lift with forks under pallet and tip over into truck then ditch pallet and spear under loop with a fork and lift clear. jobs a good un!
  18. any pics or links for said machine?
  19. either / or. the lady in question wants a carved wooden front door. she is not sure of the design she wants but would be guided by the carver. i presume that you may also have to make the (blank) door as well prior to the carving.
  20. that would be great
  21. there is nothing wrong with killing the stag but it is a crime to kill it and leave the carcass to rot in the forest. if you kill it you should eat it, otherwise leave it alone.
  22. If anyone is interested.....I have a customer who wants a carved front door for their house. pm me for more details
  23. If you can supply birch to my door (3 meter lengths / max 350mm diameter) at a rate of £30 per tonne inclusive of all taxes and delivery costs then i am interested. My location is Northern Scotland
  24. I totally agree that an injection of free market competition is a good thing. Walk into your nearest FC office and count the no of staff working there. compared to a private sector operator they are very overmanned (as is most of the public sector IMHO) However there is only one thing worse than a public monopoly and that is a private one. most public utility assets that have been sold off in the last 30 years have ended up in private monopolies or oligopolies in very short order (gas, electricity, rail, water). the end result is that mega corp plc ends up owning the lot by greasing the politicians, competition disappears and small businesses get shafted. So unless the FC is going start selling it's estate in say 10 to 500 hectare lots to the likes of the members of this forum to encourage competition, conservation and good management then forget it. we would be better of with the status quo.
  25. Agreed. but the price did catch my eye. I presume that they require a 3 phase supply (not clear from website).
