  1. I thought this was funny, Rupe, but then I saw your reason for editing!
  2. Not everyone did it as kids - just the ones who didn't fall out of a tree and kill themselves. All actions taken in a tree are one side of a cost/benefit equation. The cost of misjudging 'potential' hazards is often considerable and sometimes final.
  3. Haven't heard the word "commode" for ages!
  4. I always use it - sometimes from the side points for positioning and sometimes from the bridge as just a second point. I don't think it slows me down enough to warrant me leaving it out of my practice. You simply throw it round and snap it on - in less time than you've taken to read this. I can explain to my family why I'm late home - I couldn't explain why I fell out of a tree. Dee.
  5. So do the winners just sit tight and wait for the prize providers to contact them? (I ask, of course, for the least selfish reasons)
  6. The better kettles usually have a heavier base. This provides a more even heat - but the most important thing that this does is resists bowing of the base. If the base bows then there's not as much surface-to-surface contact between the the hotplate and the kettle.
  7. Hi APC, you reckon your day was a bit of a failure, eh? I beg to differ. You found yourself in a situation and made sensible choices to resolve it. You will be able to gain from this situation without having to pay for it in any damage to yourself, others or property. Even now, you're turning it into a learning session with the advice everyone's offering. And you've shown that you have the maturity to admit to a 'mistake' and find that most of us have beaten you to that mistake and will probably do it again in the future! I wouldn't call that a bad day! On the point of judging the lean - I find myself often felling on sloping or banked ground and can't always get a reliable 'eye' on vertical-ness. So I hang my knife from a piece of string (a plumb line) and then I can see what's leaning and by how much. Good luck, Dee.
  8. I'm hoping for the holiday to the Bahama's. But seriously - everyone's a winner with this charity. Thanks again to Steve.
  9. Maybe this is the 'start' of an apology, Butler.
  10. Yeah, and the Mog could have a fanfare playing from external speakers as you parked up at the morning's job! Quite an impression, I dare say!
  11. Or maybe... The Grand Emperor of Arborland and all associated Leafy Principalities therein contained. ( sorry, it's a slow day )

    Ice Grips

I not sure how permanent a solution you want, Rover. Go to ebay and type 'screw-in studs for boots and waders'. (tigerfarm) I use these studs for working on ice. They're reliable, hard-wearing, replacable and you can screw them out if you want to return your boots to normal traction. Walking on hard surfaces isn't perfect, but much better than eg. football boots! Just remember to avoid wooden floors! Dee

    Wow.

Thanks for posting. By the way...... which was the stupid vid?
  14. Might have given what away? ehh?
  15. Dean, it must have been quite a 'job' - doing that in free 'hand'.
  16. Someone's about to go on the 'naughty list'.
  17. Depends what 'walking' you're planning. One suggestion - Brashers for easy stuff, Scarpa for rough stuff, Koflach for cold stuff. I'm sure you'll get a dizzying array of opinions - after deciding on a 'type' of walking, I would try some on.
  18. By mentioning the 'UK' I assume you mean the UK mainland. (Northern Ireland is part of the UK - which makes it all the worse when we're held to ransom by the local dealers of any product).
  19. Buy a cheap ticket - fly over for the day - buy a big saw - home for tea!
  20. That's true. There's not much space between a 'pat on the back' and a 'kick up the arse' !
  21. This link might provide useful reading, Carlos. http://vtio.org.au/Content/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Single-Rope-Technique.pdf
  22. If the casualty is on a friction-saver tie-in-point - would a heavier rescuer pull the casualty upwards towards the TIP? And when lowering the casualty - would the heavier rescuer just lower himself / herself ?
  23. There's nearly always a difference. But ask yourself this (for it is a very personal question); Is there (or can you rationalise) a difference of nearly four times the price?
  24. Brandishing a 'sawn-off' ?
  25. Renewable?
