Not necessarily, Atree. Just soak the offending bite in hand-warm water and leave for a wee while - give it a scrub with an old tooth brush and rinse. Easy-Peasy.

Don't know about the butter - how would you get the butter itself out of the braid? Maybe you don't need to. I use pure soap flakes.

EPSOM SALTS Don't laugh! Disolve the salts in hot water and soak the hand in the solution. Or make a poltice with the same salts. It's good for drawing out - honest. Dee

Look at the quality of your socks too. Thorlo do very good cold weather socks and very good cold weather lining socks also. While you're checking that you could check the footbed material - remember this is what you're actually standing on all day - good quality footbeds, designed to insulate from the cold below, can make a huge difference. Is the Hansa hitch the wraps around the krab and the climbing line? I've seen the same idea used with Prussics to make them release more easily after loading. I'm not sure about the complete system, though. There seems to be a lot of links in a complicated set-up.

Stephen Hawking was told by his publishers that for every equation he put in his book he would lose half of his potential readers. I wonder if anyone will wade through this document and come out the better for it. My head hurts!

I've had aluminium react with other things (roadsalt etc.) but I thought graphite powder was 'safe'.

I read today that tests have shown that graphite powder corrodes aluminium in the presence of moisture. With this considered, the US Air Force no longer uses graphite as an lubricant on its aircraft - either in dry powder form or mixed with water or oil. It's something to do with graphite having a positive potential and aluminium having a negative one. Has anyone been aware of this (it's news to me), or can anyone expand on this information? I've never had experience of this kind of aluminium 'corrosion', or heard of anyone else who has. I leave it open to this forum. Dee
