  1. You could well be right. We may well end up just box shifting. Adapting and prospering is what I have been doing for 20+ years.
  2. I would be surprised these days if an insurance company was happy to insure a home made effort without any form of engineers report.
  3. I am sure your right but I find the younger generation are just as likely to pop into their local dealer and pick their brains for an hour before going outside and hitting the buy button on the ipod.
  4. Timberly and shoreland in reading Landscapers auction every year in spring.
  5. I can only speak as I find. NFU refused insurance unless it was proffessionaly built. If anyone wants to ring the Basingstoke office to check crack on.
  6. I feel for you J I supplied logs for 7 years and never worked so hard for so little. A wood man down the road described it as " doing the unprofitable for the ungrateful " I have never forgotten the look on his face I dont miss the logs one bit but probably get my wood fix from playing with the mizer and making kindling. The other saying is " familarity breeds contempt" let them get stitched up somewhere and they will be grateful when they come back.
  7. Thanks, I can see it from both sides. But if customers do not value and pay a bit more for the services we all provide they will disappear. Its the same with tree surgeons if the wood fairies fell the easy trees and leave you guys with all the difficult ones. We stopped advertising for sales 10 years ago. We used to quote nearly 100 jobs a month which kept one man busy full time. On average we sold 3 generators. At a 5% margin did not even cover his wages.
  8. Judging whether your supplier deserves a nice car is a bit strange. You never know how hard people work or where they get their profit from. I drive a clean d4 discovery commercial on some sites I would look low rent if i drove a 6 year old transit on others it looks a bit footballer. I have been running my generator business 21 years and often work 6 days a week 14 hrs a day the other end of the country. Vans are tax efficient and improve your daily enviroment. Dont worry what other people are earning look at the service they give you in this case he sounds like a pita anyway so go elsewhere for service and price.
  9. I took a call from a well spoken lady on boxing day who lived up North. Her 98 year old aunt had been without power for 4 days inc christmas day. I quoted £3500.00 inc vat for the generator knowing I would visit site at least 3 times. To cut a long story short on the third visit the ladies son decided they were not going to buy a set and if they were they would get it £500 cheaper on line. They have now decided that I should hold a hire set ready for them in case they need it in the future. I never gave them an answer and just got out of there asap. General public
  10. Apparently the only thing from china worth a look is mitox. Its a shame they cant get their quality up as their labour rates are on the floor. Cheap skilled labour and quality components they could stand a chance when lets face it how good is the european stuff now. Everyone on here is picking through through the product lists trying to find something that does not pack up after a week.
  11. NFu will only insure a tipper if it was fitted by manufacturer or proper body builder. Boulter tippers In Tadley did ours came with a serial no as well.
  12. Spot on the difference between the best manufacturer price and internet price is £100. I sold one recently with a margin of £300 and thought why bother. Your right garden kit not worth the bother. The people that screw you down the hardest would not do the same if the boot was on the other foot.
  13. After a few more views I will tell you what I will accept, and what the market will stand. Just for info we tend not to deal with small sets now especially from the public and rarely get involved with repairs. Most of our work is Large commercial standby equipment for industry. We never sell, service or repair chinese equipment.
  14. Interesting thread. I have a question for everyone. What would you expect to pay for a generator Incl vat that I buy in trade from the manufacturer for £3000.00 In 21 years I have never received a penny from a manufacturer for warranty work it just does not happen. Often we have to spend hours finding out what the customer wants then un pack and commission set before we deliver to site. We tend to avoid most enquires now unless they are regular customers. We still get people ring up for advice pick our brains then buy online.
  15. Is that a solid cubic metre or the space it occupies in his trailer.
  16. Sorry to here that if your good you should be out in 4
  17. I think I have a fuel card serv one and another with shell. This week its same price as yours 109 + vat = 131 which is very good on the motorways. I like them because I pick the most expensive garages without all the blue rinsers buying buns ( quick fill up ) bp garages always full of shoppers. Its ideal to have 2 cards when they take piss on the price you can use the other for a few weeks till the price comes down. Having bp and shell your never far from a station.
  18. Genius that way you loose your last part of the month and the new owner losses the first part of the month. Gov win win all part of the austerity measures remember were all in together well maybe not the bankers the politicians and the rich but the rest of us.
  19. I pay more for the wood and the net than cpl pay. That is of course if you can wait months for the money.
  20. John I have been organising transport for a big pile of poplar large diameter cut to 6ft in Hampshire. Are we sure its not the same pile. How many piles can there be looking for a home ?
  21. pump fuel finished of the fuel lines and diaphrams in my husky pole pruner. So rebuilt carb and thought it would be a good test for the litre bottle of aspen I was given at the apf show 3 years ago. The saw starts better smells better and cant feel any difference in performance success so far and the fuel is 3 years old
  22. If you know someone with transport and half of it is about the right size for us could be possible in two hits ?
  23. Hi mike possibly but it will be planked and cross cut so very little if any bark. From my tests it makes better kindling than the pine. Our supply of planned pine has increased since the price of chip fell out of the sky so if you prefer that should be ok for the summer.
  24. I would be interested in the pop if its 14-20" for making kindling. Just to make it worse can only get an 8 wheeler in this end.
  25. I would think most people on here were brought up with a work ethic. If you are working and genuinely struggling you should be able to get help. Alot of those people on there are in the best place. Imagine the damage they could do in the work place. Sitting around all day stuffing their faces drinking and smoking at least they should not live to a ripe old age.
