    What makes you so sure its someone on here. I think there are a few people in the country that deliver logs that dont come on here. Surely if your not sure you are going to get paid on time you just dont deliver, or deliver something unusable

    The power station boys were getting 50% of the cost of the wood they burnt. So they could afford to double the rate. We have made kindling for years from down grade rejects from timber mills but last few years anything dry has been snapped up by the biomass boys. Now the subsidies have dried up its a bit easier for us.

    I never knew that. You see all these check shirts in America jumping up and down on logs in the river and think all wood floats. But I guess softwood at 800kg does. And green beech does not.

    With the grants on softwood they get more to extract it. If you strangle the market for hardwood the price stays high win win. but not for the small log guys.

    These figures work roughly the same as mine earlier. The only bit I dont get is beech cant weigh more than water otherwise it would sink.

    Thats how it works with firewood the less you do the more money you take home.

    If they videoed it and got away with it you would say they were a legend. If the county got stuck in the estury they would not look so clever either. You dont know how far the kit will go unless you push the limits. One perished hose not very far.

    Its not so much given up, just upped the amount of kindling we do. The price of logs round our way is on the floor, price of cord sky high. As long as its viable in your area does not really matter what you get from a tonne as long as you make a living.

    Yes I knew what you were saying but thought I better say before a load more start doing logs and taking 2 thirds to the pub You must get some fairly dry green oak cord to get anywhere nr 2.2 cubic metres to a tonne. I did logs for 7 years and checked it regularly normally around 1.5 ash a little more

    Mark up is 2 thirds before other costs and labour.

    I worked on 1.5 cu to a tonne if I got more great. Most retailers work on 100% mark up without putting any labour into the end product. So really you should put a mark up on the material costs then charge for you labour at say £20 per hr. To make it worth while I worked out I need £120 for materials + 2.5 hrs labour so £165 for 1.5 cu metres cant get it so stopped doing logs.

    The way I worked it out was I sold 1.5 cube for £130 delivered. There was a tonne of green wood in there. We paid £40 a tonne for cord the rest of the costs made it up to £65. So for 3 hours work inc delivery time I got £20 an hour. Now its still £130 for 1.5 cubic metres if your lucky to get that with so many doing logs. But cord is £60 a tonne now.

    I would stay as u are on ground you dont pay rent. Keep it as a side line and do something else. As u expand you will have to pay for cord and rent then untill you hit 800 tonnes u will struggle to make a living.

    What I should of said is. Could someone give me a price to move some large butts of timber already cut to 6ft long. Cant get an arctic in my drive and will need a crane on board.

    As title need lots of pop cut to 6ft moved on 8 wheeler or tractor and trailer about 20 miles to Andover Hants.

    Strange that wood is so cheap when it is so expensive to live over there.

    I think pre face lift, the kit works but after that all the bits inside are missing. The vehicle is at end of life now for us should be sold in next few weeks. I thought about getting it done when we bought it 5 years ago but decided to hang fire until gearbox or clutch went but both have hung in there. Thanks for the info

    Looks a useful tool now. I have in the past weighed up one of the larger four wheel drive ones and wondered whether a little forklift mast could be fitted to make a cheap allterrain forklift. I would only need to pick up bulk bags off logs 300kg ish and the odd pallet.

    Worst vehicle we have for pulling trailers is our td5 commercial discovery. They stopped putting centre diff locks after the 300 tdi. For pulling trailers through mud you need a bit of momentum. as soon as a wheel slips the brakes go on and your left for dead. Four wheel drives are not invincible thats why they have tractors with tracks.

    I would say you need a scarf. I have got a stiff neck normally at the start of the winter and its really painful. But I know you bounce around in a life boat so could be anything I would go down the walk in centre and get it checked out.
