I have no problem with someone drunk using a chainsaw on their own land in their own time alone cut off what ever body parts you want . But driving a weapon at innocent people

    as they say more than one way to skin a cat. My wife used to help out with generator service work before we had kids. I hate the consumable charge on bills so dont charge it but if my wife did not get offered a cup of coffee by the customer she would put it on

    To an American "about" would mean estimate so when you fixed it at £300 you would be offering a quote. If I estimate a job at about £300 and they get pushey for a fixed price I would err on the side of caustion and say £450

    Problem with trailers hiabs and engines is you only have 3500kg to play with . Your loaded before you leave home. The payload wont pay a mans wages. Most jobs involve at least 12 tonnes of timber or its a waste of time. Leave the lift on site and run the goods home on a flatbed trailer with lifting at the other end.

    I tend to take the digger to site on an ifor williams TT105 with 4x4 with mud terrains. As long as you have room load the trailer with spoil and tip when full.

    If you have some timber you want taken away I can bring a little allterrain forklift lifts a tonne. Ok on rough surface not great in mud. Or can bring 4x4 kubota tractor good in mud but only lifts 250kg or so. A 7 series bobcat lifts 800kg but weighs 2700kg so heavy to take to site.

    Careful how much you put on one phase when you run the house a 3 phase genny needs to be balanced within 20%

    Probably but its illegal. Cutting a tree down for me is not illegal but I would not attempt it as I dont have a clue I would recommend you get someone in that knows what they are doing. Aspenarb has the right idea an will be here next year.

    What ever you do. Do it safely I dont want to get into giving advice to non qualified people on the net on how to cut corners. Get someone local to sort it properly or have an early night with a torch or candle. I was refering more to what generator to buy on the end of an extension lead. Back feeding the ring mains is a seriously bad idea I know we are all switched on practical people but when the winds howling the wife and kids are screaming your freezing cold and the brain has slowed down it only takes one little mistake. Stay safe people

    You need a change over switch. If you have a power outage in your area and your lights are on the utilities can ask to see your set up. If they see what you have done they could try and bring a prosecution. It only takes a minute to forget the sequence and someone has pulled in the main breaker at the wrong time.

    I spent a few months in croatia,Hungary and Bosnia in about 1993 installing generators for the American army. Some of the locals were lovely some not so as you can imagine in those days . I still have the pictures of the bullet holes in the side of my 110 defender. I remember it was bitterly cold -20 the whole time I was there. A part of the world I should re visit.

    If anyone wants a set configured like this I can talk to pramac first but I would imagine the link in the plug with decent label sounds like the way to go. Because then the set still has floating earth and only 120v max to earth. There is a book called Diesel generator handbook by Mahon published by Butterworth Heinmann came out in 1992. I have used it to get my Apprentices a head start before they go to college. I think its about £500 now but sometimes they come up on ebay for £75

    Two of my pet hates Harath and LPG I find LPG a pain to set up and unreliable so just avoid them. Petrol you can put an additive in or run aspen for the first tank then go onto the dirty stuff. Diesel again you can put in additives but we dont have much problem with fuel its all about keeping your tanks clean. Dont buy dodgy cherry. Probably best just to get white from a modern station.

    You should be able to add a link but talk to the manufacturer first to make sure. The link openspace man put up describes it well. The last time I worked on a small set must be 15 years so not really my thing. That briggs and stratton link has been around for at least 20 years so not sure if its up to date with the latest regs.

    The bigger cable the better a nice bit of 3 core 4mm would be good.

    If you spend a grand you could have an auto change over all your family would need to do is then is start the genny.

    Just generators have a better web site than us and I think they have a briggs and scrapum change over panel on their and lots of useful info. You probably dont need all those bells and whistles. A simple 100 amp change over in an enclosure from a local electrical wholesaler shop be ok £150-£300 needs an off position in the middle. Be careful when pulling tails either you are paying for the leccy you make or are in big danger of shock or breaking the law removing the boards fuse.

    I have in the past centre tapped them so that rcd's work. I would keep the floating earth because at least you only have 55/ 120volts to earth. If you centre tap it and someone uses it portable especially if they dont earth it you will have 240 volts to earth. The answer is I dont know on the Pramac.

    You can run your entire house on your generator when ever you like. But you must have a change over switch installed by a qualified electrician so the mains cannot be connected to the generator or vis versa. I dont know how it works with solar panels never come across this set up. We are more into commercial installations so dont tend to install into homes but do loads of Mansions. It is illegal to plug your generator into your ring main.

    The set produces 5kw we have the same size on our house. It will power all domestic lights central heating pumps, tele, fridge freezer and one major appliance. A kettle is normally 3000w so ditch that and get a travel kettle. We tend to use the micro wave but if you manage your power u can normally use an Oven. No electric shower they are normally 7-9 kw on their own.

    Thought I would post this up as people are struggling with no power. Not posted to sell generators especially, we dont keep on the shelf but special order within a few days. I have supplied the generator in the picture to many customers as a standby set for a family home. I think the price is about £3000 inc vat. The engine is a genuine Yanmar make sure if you buy local u get the P6000s and not just the P6000 the first one is about £200 more but worth it as its incredibly quiet. Dont buy this set to run off grid 18 hrs a day you need to spend at least £6000 on a 1500 rpm set. The reasons I like this set Easy to open and service Seriously Quiet 14 hr tank at full load means it could do 20 hrs and at least get through the night Fuel filler is on the side and level is visible. Reliable for a 3000 rpm machine Can have a wheel kit to move about.
