  1. But do you repair them under warranty for half your normal hourly rate. No problem service and repair on stuff bought elsewhere.
  2. I service generators at Bluewater in kent and I have noticed alot of the girls are all orange there.
  3. I think the problem the dealers have is the labour rate for warranty work is about £20-25 an hour which is tight when you have over heads. Now you dont mind if its for a year on a piece of kit you supplied and made a profit on but if someone is box shifting and killing your business why should you clear up their mess. People often bring stuff in for free repairs but when the years up do their own so its not like you are building a long term relationship with them. I have no axe to grind as we dont serve the public of the streets. I can see it from both sides but people work the system to suit their own needs. Buy cheap long distance get repaired free on the doorstep.
  4. 0.7 cubic metre just about moveable on smooth surface. 1 cu metre big heavy and you get under cut by the fly by nights. 0.5 cubic metre too small, look small not worth filling.
  5. Use a 3 metre strop and some d shackels so you pull evenly on both tipping loops that way they only take half the strain. I used to empty 1.5 cu metre bags this way and they have the same strength loops.
  6. I am sure if you go on the knitting forum it would be full of feminist clap trap and the odd pick of a mankini. Each to there own no offence to the female arbs may be they should have a bloke with a sugari bar hanging down the front.
  7. Sending a saw by post must cost £8 ea way. Not to mention the enviromental impact of sending stuff by road all over the country. If this extra £16 was payed to the local dealer I am sure they would be more willing to repair kit sold elsewhere.
  8. I must be missing something here You buy something it breaks you get it collected they send you a new one ? What if they decide you dropped it, or abused it ? I get the feeling a few people feel the local dealer is a dinasaur but in most cases this is just not true. They are well grounded businesses run with common sense and moving with the times. You may not get what you want this instant but thats life.
  9. Would have been better without the bar and stars
  10. I would stick at £95 and reduce the size of the load. Or increase the size of the trailer and charge £125.00 Breaking the £100 barrier will be difficult.
  11. I heard it from about 4 different sources but it well be open to big contracts just not transits with green waste. I would have thought you know nick being on your doorstep.
  12. Could be 16ft trailer and the bottom could be 4ft wide. I have a 16ft ifor and work on filled to top of sides is 3cu metres so allowing 45% for air space thats about 1.5 tonnes. Bit of a heap on top as well should still be under 2.5 tonnes. I tend to use a few more ratchet straps
  13. Health and safety manager for a large corporate.
  14. I think alot of those subsidies have disappeared in the last few months thats why that shut drax at Slough. Good news for the smaller suppliers in the wood game.
  15. I bought a new Nissan Navarra from Dan Perkins in London because they were £1400 cheaper. When I tried to get warranty work done locally they were reluctant and I tried 4 different garages over 3 years.
  16. You could well be right. We may well end up just box shifting. Adapting and prospering is what I have been doing for 20+ years.
  17. I would be surprised these days if an insurance company was happy to insure a home made effort without any form of engineers report.
  18. I am sure your right but I find the younger generation are just as likely to pop into their local dealer and pick their brains for an hour before going outside and hitting the buy button on the ipod.
  19. Timberly and shoreland in reading Landscapers auction every year in spring.
  20. I can only speak as I find. NFU refused insurance unless it was proffessionaly built. If anyone wants to ring the Basingstoke office to check crack on.
  21. I feel for you J I supplied logs for 7 years and never worked so hard for so little. A wood man down the road described it as " doing the unprofitable for the ungrateful " I have never forgotten the look on his face I dont miss the logs one bit but probably get my wood fix from playing with the mizer and making kindling. The other saying is " familarity breeds contempt" let them get stitched up somewhere and they will be grateful when they come back.
  22. Thanks, I can see it from both sides. But if customers do not value and pay a bit more for the services we all provide they will disappear. Its the same with tree surgeons if the wood fairies fell the easy trees and leave you guys with all the difficult ones. We stopped advertising for sales 10 years ago. We used to quote nearly 100 jobs a month which kept one man busy full time. On average we sold 3 generators. At a 5% margin did not even cover his wages.
  23. Judging whether your supplier deserves a nice car is a bit strange. You never know how hard people work or where they get their profit from. I drive a clean d4 discovery commercial on some sites I would look low rent if i drove a 6 year old transit on others it looks a bit footballer. I have been running my generator business 21 years and often work 6 days a week 14 hrs a day the other end of the country. Vans are tax efficient and improve your daily enviroment. Dont worry what other people are earning look at the service they give you in this case he sounds like a pita anyway so go elsewhere for service and price.
  24. I took a call from a well spoken lady on boxing day who lived up North. Her 98 year old aunt had been without power for 4 days inc christmas day. I quoted £3500.00 inc vat for the generator knowing I would visit site at least 3 times. To cut a long story short on the third visit the ladies son decided they were not going to buy a set and if they were they would get it £500 cheaper on line. They have now decided that I should hold a hire set ready for them in case they need it in the future. I never gave them an answer and just got out of there asap. General public
