    Could just be in the mind. Difficult to get accurate fuel mpg as since going back to shell have changed tyres and put about another 300 kgs on the truck. Weather has warmed up so less power from the battery soon the aircon will be on. But at the moment if I cruise at 70 we get 29mpg out of a td5 disco van. towing 1700kg only drops it a mile or two which is why we are sticking with the td5 had d3 on hire with trailer always under 20 mpg.

    worth looking out for one of these. Brinkman britruk made mid 90's kubota diesel watercooled engine and comes with side shift. low mast and lifts 1000kg.

    I was told womens work is watching day time tv ie cash in the attic, bargain hunt, sell yer ouse cheap. With a bit of facebook thrown in Mens work = looking after the kids while they go out for the night cos they been stuck in all day. food shopping, cooking, decorating, sticking your hand down the bog because someone flushed grommit. clearing up the dog bombs on a saturday morning with a hang over, repairing and washing the car, hoovering and come to think of it all the jobs the womens libbers used to do in the 60,s get the feeling its all gone full circle.

    We had a new shape vito diesel new common rail engine, filled up at supermarket in pembroke before we got the ferry. Filled same on way home. Engine sounded like a bag of nails so booked in for diagnostic with merc. Night before we filled up with shell noise was gone before we got off the forecourt.

    I have been running bp for the last 6 months but have another fuel card now so gone back to shell. After 2 refills of shell I swear my disco van goes better and further on shell. I always thought it was better but just thought it was all in the mind. Pulling back on the throttle all the time actually makes my ankle ache so I may have to go back to bp and pay more for less miles

    As long as you have your health the bit of tin you drive does not matter.

    I have a large copper hide mallet which is a great help. I like the dead blow idea rather than the club hammer bouncing off steel to steel. It some how feels kinder and discs and drums always seem to fall off after a few blows some drums just rely on the wheel to hold them on so could just be rusted on.

    Check fuel filters on tractor and make sure the pto clutch pack is not slipping. If the belts arent slipping cant be much else. Does the tractor smoke under load. Are you running small tractor on 1000 pto at low revs.

    Not worked on a canter but most drums have a wear ridge which you need to get the shoe over. Back the linnings right off. I tend to grind the lip off to make it easier next time.

    I would think every nationality outside the uk is rolling around on the floor now. Its the maestro van rear lights and morris marina door handles that always did it for me. Guess I will just have to suffer the big knobs in my Landcruiser

    I could not make my mind up either so I have three. I have a small all terain brinkman I bought for £800. Goes almost anywhere all day on a gallon. A 751 bobcat with forks will go anywhere but tears the ground up terrible. A jcb 525 big slow heavy will go anywhere and pick up just about anything.

    If its a good tractor and you decide its too big I would be interested I am looking for a larger tractor at reasonable money. Have a look at tractordata.com it give all the specs for most of the tractors.

    In 1997 when the cruiser you had on an 07 plate was born it was £40,000 the discovery was half the price and power. The latest Landcruiser has been out 4 years with a v8 diesel and costs £54,000 which is what you should compare the latest discovery with. Personally I dont buy them for speed and I have to buy mine not my daddy.

    We got both so cant see where you are coming from at all. Amazon was a £40k car with 200hp. Disco 17k 130hp

    we have an old 684 head gasket went 7 years ago and its still running the processor change the oily water every couple of years:thumbup1:

    You may get a mid 80s jcb 525 for £3500 could not survive without ours lifts 2.5 tonne and 4x4

    Unimog 50 mph and tows 22 tons if you get the right one

    I think the disco would be an excellent tow tug with the transfer box out of a 110 instead of top speed 95 mph it would be about 80 but better set up for towing. The 90 transfer box is even lower. I never really understood the defender thing the cab is not big enough to put decent seats in for long distance work especially at 60 mph.

    defender will do the job but a bit light for 3.5 tonne on hills. If you can stand the fuel consumption an old amazon 4.2 diesel with manual box will be twice the vehicle . Plenty of power and weight to keep things in line. The defender in low box will be screaming at 30 mph. I would avoid poly bushes when towing instead of wearing the bush they wear the metal. We always fit genuine rubbers the disco 2 ones last alot longer. We have a disco 2 van its not great for towing over 2.5 tonne as its too high geared and you have to rev the nuts of the common rail engine or it stalls which can kill the expensive dual mass flywheel.

    I am not saying I am tight but I always buy files for the 404 after a few years of running in they are just the right size for the top handle saw. I find the cheaper brands of chain stay sharper longer but are harder to sharpen and harder on the files.

    I have a 1999 amazon had for 6 or 7 years now had new brakes and piece of exhaust and 2 oil changes. Have a disco van ok for work dont want anything LR for family use. Next van will be landcruiser with d4d . New LR lots of bling no quality.

    We got dozens of pairs off googles and glasses. If they seal out the dirt they seal in the moisture and steam up. 99% of the time no problem but a gust of wind and its in. Quick wash and its out

    There is alot more money in electrical work. There is alot more hassle in electrical work than its now worth. I earned more in the year 2000 than I probably have since. I put that money into property. I do the log, kindling thing because I love it more of a paying hobby. I was hoping to tick along with logs and kindling but after last winter looks unlikely. I was going to install the odd 100k genset but not too often. The simple answer would be if a youngster had a real interest in an electrical career and could handle the paper trails legislation and constant need to up date qualifications I would say go for it. You will have a good trade to fall back on if your money making venture falls through. But if you love the simple things in life like being out side playing in the woods hate maths and working inside give it a miss.
