  1. If our beech has been left in the cord for a year and we process into a large pile through the spring normally no problem. If you process into large piles late summer onwards for following year guaranteed mould.
  2. I would imagine if its up to 6" pine would be ideal for kindling machine if not too many knots. Unfortunately you are too far away.
  3. Running the price up off the wall is not illegal. The auctioneer is able to run a lot to the reserve price without a single hand going up. The auction room is a very complex enviroment luckily for me
  4. When ever I look into it the extra costs of running another van are more than the saving in fuel.
  5. I will probably get shot for saying this so check out and research well its only an idea. The small tank I wash my hot tub filters in sometimes gets overrun with mozzies if I forget to change the water. so one day I dropped a couple of pinches of chlorine into it within 3 seconds all dead and floating. Swimming pool chlorine is cheap and goes along way.
  6. I think it started at 2k then new lights were added and higher sides in anodised and a divider. total £2400 + vat . I had 5 quotes a couple were cheaper up north but a bit of travelling. Also there are tippers and there are tippers. Yes having served an apprenticeship with a vehicle body builders I still have contacts but if I build another will give you a shout first.
  7. Nothing wrong with defender. If you need a truck to tackle uneven terrain when loaded its ideal, if you dont do many long runs or motorway work. If you think you will often overload dont buy a Hilux you will snap the chassis. If I was looking at year 2000 vehicles I would not want a defender, after 12 years they will be hanging doors wont shut and heater packed up seats uncomfortable. I would imagine defenders less than 8 years old are a very good vehicle just a bit big to get up driveways to tip logs.
  8. I have no working experience of the new ones although if I was set on a new pickup it would defo be the HL2. But I seem to hear alot of moans about new pickups with electronic problems and engines blowing. I like our mk4 as we have run it hard for 2 years and changed the oil and replaced the rear brake shoes. They are capable of 300k and you can pick one up with 120k for less than 3 grand. The new pick ups have huge fronts on them for crumple zones. Our mk 4 has a steel bumper and cheap glass head lights and short nose which is ideal for squeezing log deliveries up icy drive ways. Why spend 15k when 3k buys a better more reliable cheap to repair vehicle.
  9. I think my next tipper will be an extra cab as it has the best payload of the lot. If I was in your position I would not be afraid to spend 3k and fit the body to a 10year old hilux . I think the early d4d engine stuff was still well built not so sure of the later stuff. Hilux are a totally different experience to the defender. After 5 years the body can be moved to the next truck.
  10. waxoyl is ok in the box sections but outside in high wash areas a year and its all gone. If you use a hot wash underneath gone in weeks. I tend not to waste my time and money and work the extra day and put it towards a newer truck im not one for driving round in 17 year old trucks.
  11. Nah they are civil servants that will be the pension pot for the year. The salary will be 32k + car and benefits for a 16 hr week.
  12. I agree on the kick back. They are slower running but alot more torque at low speed and kick about alot more especially when starting in the cut.
  13. we have the big stihl electric I would say about same power as ms260 not as much as ms390 . Very well made and reliable. Need to bang the dust out of filter every 10 minutes or so and clean with airline after 5-10 hrs use. Vibration is terrible no antivibes at all. I can cut 12" rings for 15 minutes but then tend to rest saw for half an hour or I think it will get hot. will cut 8" stuff all day long.
  14. My chain sharpening is not the best but not had a problem cutting candles or with the grain. Worst problem I seem to get is long stringy bits clog saw. I tend to hold a few inches out of cut and not pressure on saw so the strands break up a bit.
  15. Because I think we are mog spotting not mog buying. If one of us was interested in buying would have picked up the phone in seconds. I probably like many am interested in mogs but the last thing I need in this economic climate is another mog.
  16. If you have to pay a mans wage for the day and you have the access it normally pays to have an arctic 27 tonnes at a time set up right you should get 2 loads a day possibly more if you work long days. I doubt you will do that with tractor and trailer.
  17. No wonder these engines can give trouble that is a very small gap. I would imagine with an engine running slightly lean it would not take long for the valve to regress and close that gap up . Regular servicing I would say is defo on the cards for these little engines those two links are very good and show clearly how to carry it out.
  18. unless you can get it for £500 leave it where it is will cost nr a grand for sides and ramps. I had an indespension 3.5 tonne trailer I dont like the rubber suspension units especially when they get old and the bearings look very small. I think the ifor is a much better trailer.
  19. The kindling market is very competative and its difficult to earn a wage even with the latest newest most efficient kit. Unless you have alot of spare time I would concentrate on your main business. If we have another mild winter there will be plenty of bargain bags about.
  20. That looks a bit scarey enough to put me off. Recycleing is a good idea but not if it gives you the squits for weeks. I am a bit suspicious of the motives of the powers that be when they sell us our own crap back to show a profit. Remember a year or so ago all across europe they were dropping dead and the link was salad and cucumbers ( probably grown in sewage ) . I thought mushroom compost was made from chicken poo from large broiler farms ( not a pretty sight when they clear them out after 6 weeks )
  21. Have you tried fuel wood sounds like their kindlet pro 3 phase machine can be set for 9in logs or kindling.
  22. over about 20 years ago they did not worry about age relating I think thats a recent thing. That mog looks late 60's to me
  23. I have a sheppach ox12 which was 3 phase which was superb running off a 17 kva genset. We run it once from a tractor hydraulic too slow. It is now running off a 11hp honda direct drive not enough power. My point is if you have 3 phase power that would be the way to go.
  24. If it was me I would try and cut the hours down in the force and do a day or so a week in the trees especially while the recession is biteing and possibly getting worse. After a couple of years you may find the enthusiasm wanes a bit. A few more years in the force will improve your pension. I have started a couple of businesses in the past and always ended up back on the road servicing big generators for large organisations. After being on good money for years you can earn 20k for a few years but after a while your car is old and your house looks tatty and your holidays are not as good. I know from experience. It takes some doing to make 4k a month after expences.
  25. It does not say what size u600 or u900 . We had a u600 for a bit of fun but very little use for work with a 60hp engine in it. Also may have been registered in 1983 but when was it made.
