  1. Not having to get an mot does not mean you can drive in a unroadworthy condition especially these days with the compensation culture. Bending the rules and finding loop holes may be fine until you have an accident then the authorities tend to look into things in detail. The reason the tacho rules came in for commercials is that idiot up north towing 14 hrs a day fell asleep and drove down the railway embankment.
  2. I agree I also dont put any pressure on them to take over any of the businesses we have running. When I left school I had a huge pressure from my father to get an apprenticeship so I could pay my way from 15. May have been the right move as I was def not accademic. I would rather earn 12k a year and enjoy my job than earn 50k and hate it.
  3. You could get a deal like that about 4 years ago now you will be lucky to get 10% off list price. List for a tipping ifor with mesh sides is about 4k + vat
  4. Milk used to be one of tescos best profit streams. Its the same in most trades small individuals will get crushed by corporate giants. Large companies want to sell our kindling for £4 plus but want to pay pennies with us picking up the transport bill. I prefer to cut out the middle man and supply small business direct. But the advantage to kindling is it does not tend to go off like milk
  5. Go to the local motor factor and get an alternator for a 1986 escort or allegro or similar. Basically as cheap as chips as long as it will fit. I bought a few bosch refurb alternators about 10 years ago for £7 ea. So now will be 20 -40 I have a 40 amp alt on our international which runs the processor because it runs for hrs it does not need a monster alt.
  6. Now that to me is the way to ask. Straight to the point offering to collect and even help on site. And he did not accuse the british race of being tight in the opening title. If anyone needs some very fine wood dust from pine, bone dry I can create about 2 cu metres a day with kindling production at the moment.
  7. If you think it will be a problem you can re plate it yourself with an ally plate and a couple of pop rivets.
  8. I did look into this a year or so ago and the only answers i came up with is if the trailer and load weigh more than 750kg you need brakes. I think you are right about the 4 times rule. I have a 2140 jd which I think is about 80 hp and an unbraked trailer which I can put 3 cu metres of soil in about 4 tonnes. I would not want to put more than that behind. Brakes are a good idea you may be able to use the hyd service to power the brakes by pulling gently by hand on the lever.
  9. Spent the afternoon with him sorting off cuts ready to put through upcut machine interest falls off after about an hour. Needs a bit of fun in between delivering and driving things. Think he is helping his mum load kindlet tommorrow. He is a grafter but also more academic than most so should do well in school unlikely to follow my proffessions too bright, hence dont really want him cutting bits off. Has the usual excessive gaystation habits so a bit more practical physical activity will help develop different areas of the brain. If they enjoy helping through the holidays and it puts money in their pockets I think its a good thing. I see to many mature students waiting for their parents to buy them a car and pay for their lessons before sponging on the dole till their parents die and leave an inheritance.
  10. Generous as in chip required, cash waiting. Your q to start the ball rolling I think How much over the odds were you thinking of offering
  11. Summer holidays are approaching and 11 year old son wants some pocket money jobs. Obviously cant get involved with machinery but any ideas gratefully received. Need things that keep them interested without danger.
  12. What you need and what ifor are now doing is having the hinge point about 5in above the tail gate so the logs dont jam up when tipped.
  13. Ifor williams dont make anything that grosses at more than 3500kg
  14. If another comes along buy it and suffer the running costs. Unless you are doing less than 200 tonnes a year. Trailers can be a pain especially in ice, snow and dark. I have a couple of ifor tippers that have not left with logs on in two years. I have an 8x5 with extended sides and divider carries 2 cube. When it was in use had a full service inc brake linings all round 4 new brake cables some wheel bearings and spring bushes. Now it needs 4 new tyres. Could be tempted to sell it.
  15. Maybe but if they own the wood it has cost £14 a tonne to get it to the processor plus £10 to process. So thats £24 and they sell for £70 per 3/4 tonne or 1 cubic metre. Still seems to be a huge margin for them and not much for the self employed machine owning hardworking busy daddy. If you bought the cord yourself should see £40 a tonne for you time. Just my view which may be completely wrong and I am sure I have overlooked alot.
  16. So you turnover £3000 they turn over £30,000 and you do most of the work.
  17. Its hard to blame young people when schools treat them like clients and have to listen to their complaints. While they are growing up its all about them. You need to wade through the ' to be honest' 'to be fair with you' negotiating bull you get on the first day. Then after a baptism of work fire some are ace.
  18. Good idea I bet you get a bit of solar gain as well. Bit like a mini poly tunnel. Any condesation should also run away rather than drip on logs.
  19. Because the rest are no better in a lot of cases worse and parts alot more expensive. The Td5 has a dreadful rep but we ended up with one and it has been very good. You hear alot more about vehicle faults as its all over the net. The more popular the vehicle the more complaints you are likely to get. I had a courtesy car in 2004 which was a D3 and thought it was excellent to drive. They cant be that bad as 2004 models with 100k on the clock are still fetching 10k.
  20. D3 and rr sport same chassis and running gear. What is the workshop time to take the body off. It may now be the best way to get to the major items since they shoe horned the v6 in there. Does the wiring come apart with multi plugs. I have been running discovery vans since the ice age and have put off buying a new D4 commercial. Nice vehicle to drive but wrong side of 30k. My disco 1 was 1750 kg empty the D4 is over 2700kg depending on spec. carrying an extra tonne must put it into the class 7 mot ? I am weighing up one of those late baby landcruisers and ditching rear seats blacking out windows.
  21. Long shot but a few years ago we used to have to fit a diode on the alternator circuit of our gensets because when the control panel shut the power off to the shut down solinoid the alternator kept the voltage to it. Could be the diode has failed or been fitted the wrong way round ( assuming it even has one ) May give your sparks something to work on. If you get a new altnator and it charges ok but you cat switch the truck off try fitting a diode.
  22. 1 tonne of beech cord at 35-40% moisture or cut 18 months makes 1.5 cu metres of loose logs. It does not make alot of difference what size the logs are.
  23. to get 2 cubic metres the cord must be very dry
  24. If you take the bottles out and cut them into 6 they fit nicely in the top. You could make sure they dont blow out by shrink wrapping the edge.
