  1. Are the trees too small to turn into cord wood. Have this if it helps
  2. I have a bob cat which was used on a pig farm for 3 years when new. After about 4 months the brass fuel pick up I think picks up straw particles which we cant seem to drain out. To get fuel tnk out is eng out job. We use an air line to blow back and clear pick up away it goes for several months. I would snap or grind bolts off inspection cover then drill and retap threads.
  3. Wooden but could be metal frames. Needs to be so you cant see through under 6ft but could add another foot for detail.
  4. There are tank cleaning machines with polishing filters. We have a home made one which is excellent. New they are about £1500. We stick ours in all our tanks and leave them for a few hours. Because they turn the fuel over several times they eventually grab everything. Sounds like you may have the algi plant growing in your tank may be worth getting some proper biocide aswell.
  5. I need some large drive way gates 6ft x 6ft 2 off for my drive. I have enough material here to make 100 gates but not the time or skills. We are near Andover hants if anyone has any ideas.
  6. You should get 1.5 cu metres of loose logs out of 1 tonne of green beech. For the last 5 years we have processed 200 tonnes a year with no log deck. Just made a manual log deck this year and the job is soooo much easier should of done it 5 years ago. I dont think I could justify the cost or effort of making a powered deck unless I was going to do + 500 tonnes a year. Big processors dont seem to make the best of small cordwood and the logs seem to come out bigger. I think a 300-350mm machine is the best compromise as it seems more controlable. After last years mild winter I would be cautious ivesting to much money.
  7. I am going with the easy jet idea this year. 15-20% priced to sell through the summer at £130 for 1.5 cu metres. If we get a cold snap in oct £140 if it gets short in dec lots more. You really find out who your regular customers are in mild winter and there is not many that don't shop around for cheap wood. Logs don't go off if stored right so you can always sell next year.
  8. Logs tend to be the poor relation to everything else that goes on in the yard. Ok when work is quiet unless you get the timber free I find it pays about ten quid an hour when you realistically break it down.
  9. Modifying and plugging loop holes over the years has made the rules so complex that even vosa dont understand them. We go about our business earning a living in the hope that if we fall foul of a law no one understands, that when we get to court that the judge has consumed enough gin and be in a big rush to get to the golf course that he lets us off lightly.
  10. side tracking slightly I see lidls are selling a little electric pole pruner. I only need it for my garden but there is 1.5 acres of it. Anybody tried one out ? I would not consider it for hard pro use but we have got some bits of parkside kit that gets used in the business and not been a problem.
  11. Anton saws are local to us pick up and drop off. Last time I asked 5p a tooth. They can replace missing teeth aswell. I would buy a spare and send yours off you have one in hand then. If your geared up for a days work and hit a few nails you can just change the blade and carry on.
  12. Reading what I wrote I can see the confusion. It made sense to me expensive kero makes our logs look cheaper. If you need kero for your house may be best to get it this week. high oil prices and cold weather = lots of log sales = higher prices might even show a profit again this year.
  13. Part of the reason for mad log sales winter 2009 and 2010 was kero at £1 a litre. A hard winter helped but if the price of oil is high people drop back on logs.
  14. Hi Clive I like your wifes idea better. The way the economy and property prices are a handler may be a better investment. We are looking at similar options and my gut feeling is worth waiting 3 years for some bargain properties. I need a reliable tele as we back up alot of hospitals and I have a couple of nice hire sets which could need loading in the snow 1 oclock in the morning. My 525 is about the oldest bit of kit in my yard. I have 3 forklifts and they always seem to be running around I dread to think the hours we would clock on one machine. processing kindling and logs is easier if you have a couple of forks and a bucket at the same time.
  15. After last winters poor log sales I came to the conclusion that if you have a harsh winter and you have the stock ready you can clean up and make a good living. If its a mild winter forget it. Even with the increase in fuel prices people will be selling 3 cu metres round here for £140. If you buy cord in you need to wait until all the arb waste has gone. We were really busy with wholesale kindling and already booked now till October for large orders. I wish everyone luck with there ventures and hope for a cold winter.
  16. Nice straight tidy looking manitou looks like the sort of machine we are looking for. Someone mentioned not buying from a livestock farm is this due to the corrosive wee type substances getting into the delicate bits ? . Do some of these machines have hydraulic based joysticks rather than micro switch based systems. I am not keen on too many delicate micro switches and electronic bits.
  17. You could try glover in grately about 15 miles from salisbury but may help on the way home or if you are working east of salisbury may be ok.
  18. Yes had a look a year ago excellent looking bit of kit for tight spaces. The very biggest one lifts a tonne and costs about 20k new. Difficult to find used. Thats why we decided on a used 2 tonne machine. we often pick up 2 tonne stuff ie silent gensets and packs of wood.
  19. Thanks for your feedback. Manitou is on my short list especially since the dealer is nearby. Never thought of JD but maybe too new and out of my price range. Thinking of spending 10-14k
  20. I dont know of a 4x4 from any country that does not have the potential to cost you alot of money. L200 well know for clutch and engine problems as is the navarra. My Amazon suspension, electric steering column, air con problems. LR lots of cheap bits fall off all the time. New discovery, electronic nightmare. Fourtrack not made anymore and stupidly light to tow 3.5 tonne. Ford Ranger half the people I know love them the other half bad experience. I think the best compromise is a £3000 toy colorado.
  21. Looking at the pic its around an acre. I dont see any buildings but I would say an acre of ag land is worth 7-15k if it can be used for a pony it may make 30k tops. With the noise problem it may pay you to look else where anyway unless it comes cheap. I have considered a small woodland say 3 acres clear a track and make a small clearing to work in. Chainsaw noises coming from woodland does not seem to attract as much attention. I am sure living in a log cabin is quite nice
  22. Try lc packaging our big 1.5 cube bags were about £5 last year but they are seriously tuff and we get at least 3 uses out of them. £1.75 a year per 1.5 cube seems cheap when you think what it costs for building space.
  23. I use my forklifts alot and am thinking of chopping in my old JCB 525. I am reducing the size of my yard but would still like at least a 2 tonne lift. I am thinking a 520-40 or 525-50 one of the later little jobbies with proper 4x4 not the teletruck. Or possibly a manitou buggiscopic but I find them a bit revvy, crude and slow. Any advice welcome especially regards repair access, overheating, joysticks and electrics falling apart etc
  24. We process into large 1.5 cu meter bags. Near time of sale we empty all of them into a vented poly tunnel for say 3 weeks. Reason we do this its easier to load our tipper with bobcat than try and transport and off load expensive vent bags. Also mixes up the different species so everyone gets a share of the beech and ash rather than one customer getting all the ash. I make sure we never manually double handle. I can afford 30p of diesel but not £10 of labour if that makes sense.
  25. I have been in a similar situation and have done some research this is only what I have found out and heard and not always from official sources. Be careful how you run the mortgage through your business as it may incur capital gains tax if you sell later. Processing of timber not grown on the property is classed as industrial and can attract business rates. If you contact the local planners for advice you will attract attention. If you dont upset the neighbours generally you will be left to do your thing. But a quick way to upset people is 20 hrs a week of chainsaws running. If you are going to run machinery try and pick somewhere remote or near a dual carriage way ( back ground noise )
